FORTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
FORTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
A Message to our Graduates
from Dr. Barbara G. Risser
President of FLCC
Welcome to the 48th commencement ceremony of Finger Lakes Community College.
This is an exciting day! I hope you will always remember with pride your traditional
walk across the stage in front of family, friends and professors to receive your hard-earned
recognition as a college graduate.
When all is said and done, your college experience, more than anything, is about the people
you meet and the lessons you learn; not just the coursework, but the life lessons: the value
of hard work and the realization that you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible
with guidance and support from your professors, advisors, family and friends.
All too soon, today’s ceremony will be over and everyone will ask, “What are you going
to do next?”
I hope you never tire of questions about what’s next. Think about it this way: People are asking
because they expect you to have an answer. They have seen your success in getting your
associate degree or certificate. Those closest to you watched you reach other goals along
the way: Dean’s list, a scholarship, a winning season, a personal best, an A on that final project,
a passing grade on the hardest class you ever took.
“What are you going to do next?” is a hopeful question. It is a sign that others take an interest
in you and have confidence in you. Please count me among them. Whatever is “next” for you,
may you embrace the future with confidence, enthusiasm and joy.
Congratulations to all of our 2016 graduates!
Gail O. Mellow
President, LaGuardia Community College
2016 FLCC Commencement Speaker
Since 2000, Dr. Gail O. Mellow has served as the president of LaGuardia Community
College in Queens. LaGuardia serves more than 50,000 students and is one of the most
ethnically diverse campuses in the U.S.
Since Dr. Mellow joined LaGuardia, the college was named one of the Top Three Large
Community Colleges by the Community College Survey of Student Engagement in 2003
and was awarded the prestigious 2006 MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence
Award for Service to Underserved Students.
An expert on the history, development and future of the American community college,
Dr. Mellow co-authored Minding the Dream: The Process and Practice of the American
Community College and the new book Taking College Teaching Seriously: Pedagogy Matters!
She is frequently sought as a commentator on the changing landscape of higher education,
strategies for improving the nation’s graduation rate and the important role community
colleges play in growing America’s middle class and strengthening the economy. She has
been quoted in a range of publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal
and Bloomberg BusinessWeek and has appeared on national radio and television broadcasts
on NPR, MSNBC and PBS.
Dr. Mellow attended Finger Lakes Community College in fall 1974 and received an A.A. from
Jamestown Community College, a B.A. from SUNY Albany, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in social
psychology from George Washington University.
Dr. Mellow was presented with a Distinguished Alumni Award at last night’s FLCC Alumni
Association Awards Celebration.

ARC’s College
Experience
Ontario ARC’s College Experience gives individuals with
developmental disabilities an opportunity to develop skills
that will prepare them for employment and help them
achieve greater independence. Finger Lakes Community
College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges serve
as the learning environments for Ontario ARC’s program.
Students in the College Experience can join the campus
community by taking part in athletics, clubs, classes and
special events. The program helps students establish goals
and make meaningful life choices. This year’s graduates
are Anthony James D’Aurizio, Orin Levi Rivenburg,
Lindsey Arsenault and Michael Anthony Yannotti.

A Place to Grow
My connection with the staff and faculty at FLCC has
grown into a family-like relationship. And, the academic
and leadership opportunities I’ve had here have played
a major role in my character development and success.
I served on the Campus Activities Board and participated
in AALANA, an organization that represents the college’s
African-American, Latino, Asian and Native American
populations. I also represented the student body on a
committee to find a new staff member, and more recently,
I served on the committee in charge of the search for
a new college president. I am grateful and honored
to have been part of this successful and loving college.

Big aspirations
I moved to the Finger Lakes from Michigan after an
unsuccessful stint in college. I enrolled at FLCC after
I met John Cromartie, the administrator of the Geneva
Campus Center: He was so positive and welcoming,
I knew that it was the right place for me. I knew I was
smart and capable, but for some reason I didn’t believe
in myself. When others like John started to believe
in me, I knew that I could do anything I set my mind
to. They recommended me for scholarships, introduced
me to transfer counselors, and had me consider schools
of a higher level. My path became richer and more
fulfilling than I ever could have imagined.

A Dream Realized
I was a stay-at-home mom and a waitress,
but I always wanted to be a nurse. I never
thought I could do it, but I decided to start
taking classes when my five children got older.
I transferred to FLCC because it was close
and convenient. Everyone in the nursing
program was extremely helpful! This is going
to change our lives.

Half-century of FLCC
In less than two years, FLCC will mark the 50th
anniversary of the first day of classes on
Feb. 1, 1968. A total of 125 full- and part-time
students began taking courses in downtown
Canandaigua storefronts. It would be another seven years before FLCC had its own campus on Lincoln Hill.
FLCC began marking milestones along the way to our 50th anniversary last fall,
with a celebration to mark the Ontario County Board of Supervisors vote to create
a college on Sept. 16, 1965. The first board of trustees met on Nov. 14, 1966, and the
college got its first name, Community College of the Finger Lakes, on March 27, 1967.
Anyone interested in getting involved in events related to the 50th anniversary
can contact Amy Pauley, executive director of the FLCC Foundation, at
[email protected]. Anyone interested in sharing photos or other materials
about college history, should contact Lenore Friend, director of community affairs,
at [email protected].
Geneva Campus Center
The College recently marked the final
phase in FLCC’s eight-year expansion
and renovation plan with a ribboncutting ceremony at the FLCC Geneva
Campus Center at 63 Pulteney Street.
The 32,000-square-foot center has
nine general classrooms, two computer
labs, one biology/chemistry lab and dedicated rooms for emergency medical service
courses, certified nurse assistant training and adult literacy programs.
The completion of the Geneva Campus Center follows the construction of the
FLCC Viticulture and Wine Center in Geneva, the expansion and renovation
of the main campus in Canandaigua, the addition of a biology lab at the Wayne
County Campus Center, the addition of the East Hill Campus in Naples, and
the opening of the Victor Campus Center.
Academic Regalia
History and explanation
Academic regalia – the cap, gown and hood – is higher education’s link with
its long and illustrious past. Regalia indicates the academic degree earned by
the wearer. The bachelor’s gown has long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown
has notched slits in the sleeves through which the forearms protrude. The doctor’s
gown is distinguished by the three horizontal velvet bars on the large, bell-shaped
sleeves, and the doctor’s cap is round. Additionally, the colors of the hood lining
represent the degree-granting institution, and the color of the border indicates
the academic field in which the degree was earned:
