A letter from Mr. Andreas l Andrianopoulos
The/allowing is a letter we received/rom
Mr. Amdreas I. Andrianopoulos, Member
of Parliament and former Deputy Minister
of Foreign Affairs. Mr. AndrianopouJos
emphasizes the need o/preserving the 7 to JO
ratio in the US military aid to Greece and
Turkey:
March 7, 1983
Dear Friend,
It has been quite a long time since] last
had a chance to get in touch with you.
However, the memories of our close cooperation during the days of my stay in
office are vivid. It is difficult to forget the
warm welcome that I received while visiting
your community, neither can I stop
remembering your magnificent efforts for
the welfare of Greece during the difficult
days of the Cyprus invasion and of the arms
embargo on Turkey.
Today there is a new government in
Athens. It has a different ideology and
pursues diametrically different political
ends. Funhermore, its internal socialist
policies along with its overall foreign orientations are far from pleasant. The national
problems of our country. however, are the
same. And we are united in dealing with
them. Greece's national independence along
with the freedom and self-respect of its
citizens is a concern common to all of us irrespective of ideologies or party affiliations. The cause of the Greek nation is a
cause of peace, justice and friendship.
The preservation of the ratio 7 to 10 in the
arms shipments to Greece and Turkey is a
New Archons Join Campaign
to Save the Patriarchate
Strengthened by the addition of 17 new
Archons, the Order of St. Andrew the
Apostle has launched a national campaign
to restore religious freedom and human
rights to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of
Constantinople, the worldwide center of
Orthodox Christianity located in Istanbul,
Turkey.
Archbishop lakovos, spiritual leager of
Greek Orthodox Christians in the Americas,
officiated on the Sunday of Orthodoxy at a
Ceremony of Investiture during which he
conferred the highest honor that the Church
can bestow, the title of "Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate," upon J7 dedicated
laymen from throughout the United States.
These new Archons will join their fellow
members in the Order of S1. Andrew the
Apostle, which is undertaking an ambitious
effort to raise the conciousness of Americans
about the longstanding oppression and
harassment of the Patriarchate by the
Turkish government.
Partly by distributing up to one million
copies of an informative pamphlet entitled
"The Plight of t~e Ecumenical Patriarchate
of Constantinople," the Order is hoping to
produce a groundswell of public opinion not only among Orthodox Christians or
Greek-Americans but among the general

populace.
National Archon Commander Dr. Anthony Borden outlined the campaign at a
Sunday of Orthodoxy Banquet in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where he announced
that April 24 has been designated as "Ecumenical Patriarchate Sunday" with Priests
speaking from the pulprit on the subject and
distribution of the pamphlets in the
NEW ARCHONS

by Archbishop Iakovos, last month_

vital factor for the endurance of peace in the
Aegean Sea. It is also a guarantee for a free
Greece and a major factor for a stable
Western alliance. Congress should be persuaded to adhere to its previous decision: the 7
to 10 ratio should not be reversed.
Your dedication to a just and humane
American foreign policy, along with your
love for our small country makes me
confident that you will mobilize all your
effons and exert your well-known influence
to achieve this important end. It is yet
another sacrifice that Greece calls upon you
to make. But it is also a duty to democracy,
freedom and civilization_
With kind regards,
Andreas J. Andrianopoulos, M.P.
Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
Parishes.
"With persistence and dedication we will
succeed in our efforts to save the Ecumenical
Patriarchate," he said . "Fighting for justice
and human dignity is not an exercise in
futility. It is a difficult but inspiring struggle
in which we shou ld all participate.
"As defenders of the Faith, we understand
that for significant historic, et hnic, and
religious reasons, the Ecumenical
Patriarchate should remain in Constantinople where God - through S1. Andrew founded it in 36 A.D. "
U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes, D-Md., a
member of the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, briefly addressed the audience
in his capacity as an Archon.
Dr. John Brademas, who championed religious freedom and human rights around
the world during his 22 years in Congress
before becoming President of New York
University, delivered the main address. He,
too , is an Archon.
Brademas spoke "about matters I believe
to be of great importance to Americans of
Greek origin - the survival of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey, the issue of
American-Greek-Turkish relations and the
question of how we as American citizens of
Greek descent can and should bring our
influence to bear on both questions.
"Let me say as forcefu lly as I can that we
must not - :and cannot .- lose heart nor
should we allow our earlier failures to delfect
or discourage us. Instead, as we launch this
new campaign, we must clarify the issues
25
before us, identify the groups that share our
concerns and mobilize their support.
"We are not here speaking of a narrow
issue, one that concerns only Greeks and
Greek-Americans or, for that matter, solely
Christians. We are rather voicing our
concern about the sanctity of human and
religious rights more broadly.
"I see here, therefore , an opportunity for
effective coalition-building that transcends
religious, racial, ethnic and political
loyalties.
"What Greek-Americans discovered from
the Cyprus crisis was that well-organized
political action, combined with able leadership and the right issue, could affect national
policy.
"I am encouraged by the appointment of a
valued friend, Congressman Gus Yatron of
Pennsylvania, to chair the House Foreign
Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on
Human Rights and International Oganizations.
". understand that Congressman Yatron
plans soon to conduct hearings on Turkish
violations of human rights, .including, for
the first time, sessions on the situation of the
Greek minority in Turkey and on the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Through such
hearings, we can draw these matters to the
attention of the wider American public.
"For finally, in making our case, we must
stress that this is an issue of concern not only
to Greek-Americans, nor is it merely a
question of politics or diplomacy.
"We 1!peak rather of something that
transcends these issues; we speak of religious
persecution and ethnic discrimination, of
gross violations of international treaties. We
speak of issues that are fundamentally moral
in nature.
"We must, therefore, send our appeals to
the United Nations, to the leaders of
American Churches and synagogues, to the
heads of all the world's Churches and denominations, and to organizations concerned
with the rights of humankind. We must ask
them to join a cause - which is their cause,
too - the protection of human and religious
rights.
"I remind you of words written 19 years
ago by His Eminence, Archbishop Iakovos:
'The Patriarchate is not a collection of
buildings, walls and grounds. It is a living
spiritual force embodied in an institution
that has for centuries been the very core and
heart of the Greek Orthodox Christian
tradition.'
"You and 1 must make sure that this force,
this institution, this tradition, continues."
Archon Historian Dr. Deno Geanokoplos, Professor of Orthodox Church History
at Yale University, delivered the historical
remarks entitled "The Orthodox Church
and the SUrvival of the Greek People Under
Turkish Domination." He is President-elect
of the American Society of Church
Historians, the first Orthodox Christian so
honored.
26
"One of the miracles of history, it seems to
me " he said "is the survival of the Greek
pe~ple unde~ Turk ish domination in the
four centuries between 1453 and 1821. This
Turkish occupation was characterized by
severe oppression, harassment, humiliation
and . . . at times even by purposeful decimation of the Greek popUlation. Hundreds of
thousands of Greeks were executed. Entire
villages were obliterated and their inhabitants replaced by Moslems.
"In view of all these unremitting pressures and almost intolerable conditions,
how were the Greek people able to survive
their long ordeal? I think their survival
should be attributed in considerable part to
the Greek Orthodox Church, headed by its
Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople,
~taqrrH.lisETE
Ti~
and particularly to the lowly town and
village Priests who clung tenaciously to the
faith and were able to impart no small degree
of strength to their parishioners.
"The existence of a Greek nation today is
owed in no small part .. . to the steadfastness of the Orthodox Clergy, who inspired
both common people and the aristocrats of
Constantinople alike to preserve the religious faith handed down by their forefathers.
"Had the determination, resolution and
faith of the Patriarchs and their lower Clergy
faltered, 1 think it is very possible that the
Greek people, in their historic homeland,
could not have survived the long night of
Turkish oppression and domination."

St. Michael's Home for the Aged
Launches $3 Million Drive
St. Michael's Home for the Aged has
a $3 million national fund-raising
drive to construct new facilities with a gala
benefit dinner at the Hotel Pierre that celebfated the Home's 25th anniversary.
Three hundred friends of St. Michael's
paid $100 per ticket and ignored a torrential
downpour to fill the ballroom. Archbishop
Iakovos, spiritual leader of Greek Orthodox
Christians in the Americas and Honorary
Chairman of the St. Michael's Executive
Board, was limited in his remarks by laryngitis.
"Accept my most grateful thanks for
everything you have done for S1. Michael's
and everyt hing you intend to do," His Eminence said.
The Archbishop praised Father John A.
Pou los, Pastor of S1. Spyridon Church in
Upper Manhattan and a life member of the
Board in recognition of his tireless efforts to
found Sl. Michael's.
"I would like to thank Father Poulos, who
was one of the first to conceive of this horne
for the aged and who worked so dedicatedly
to found this home," he said.
Dinner Dance Chairman John G. Manos
told the audience; "This is indeed a cause for
celebration si nce we hope to commence
construction of new facilities this Spring.
"This new home will mean that our
precious senior citizens can remain secure in
the knowledge that they will always have a
place to stay St. Michael's," he
concluded.
Nicholas Pateras, recently re~lected as
President of the Executive Committee. delivered the main speech.
He called for a "commitment to build the
finest facility of its kind in the belief that
nothing is too good for the founders of our
ethnic community in this country."
"We have the opportunity to thank these
selfless pioneers - within their lifetimes for the priceless legacy that they have left
us," Pateras continued.
"We will also have the satisfaction of
knowing that future generations of elderly
Greek Orthodox men and women will have a
place that is, in the words of His Eminence.
'refreshing to all old people.'
"Greek-Americans have always been
hardy and self-reliant; we have a tradition
of ' taking care of our own.' For 25 years we
have done just that in Yonkers. More than
500 persons haNe lived at S1. Michael's
despite its small 4O-bed capacity.
"S1. Michael's is a unique institution.
Nowhere else are the distinctive services that
it provides available. Yet the need is greater

than we can accommodate in our present
location, so we must rise to the challenge and
help realize the dream that lies before us.
"This is the ultimate undertaking that we
can embark upon. I n order to reach our goal
of $3 million, the active participation of
everyone with sensitivity to our cause is
required," Pateras concluded.
