Reconstructive Microsurgical Fellowship
DURATION OF TRAINING ‐ Six Month Fellowship NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE ‐ One DESCRIPTION
The Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Manitoba offers one of the most intensive Reconstructive Microsurgical fellowships in North America. With more than 450 free flaps completed per year, a single fellow operates on 150 to 200 flaps during their fellowship. The Plastic Surgery Section is in the unique position to provide all microvascular reconstruction within our province, thus ensuring a vast diversity of reconstruction patients. More than 350 perforator flaps per year for Breast, Head and Neck, lower extremity, upper extremity and trunk reconstructions; making perforator flaps the most frequently performed reconstructive operation at our main hospital. The breath of perforator flaps performed included DIEP, SIEA, TUG, SGAP, IGAP, TAP, ALT and “free style” Perforator flaps. Muscle flaps for function reconstructions are routinely performed for facial reanimation, functional abdominal wall reconstruction, and upper extremity functional reconstruction. Interests in total and near total nasal reconstruction routinely use pre‐laminated flaps and ascending helical rim free flaps. While the emphasis of the fellowship is on microvascular reconstruction, all types of complex reconstruction takes place and complement the fellowship immensely. The fellow will be integrated into the residency program which currently includes 14 residents, 3 physician assistants and 13 plastic surgery attendings. The majority of the fellow’s time will be spent with 2 attendings with exposure to all others during microvascular cases. The fellow will be paid at a PGY 6 level in the University of Manitoba and will be funded to attend one microvascular or general reconstructive plastic surgery conference during the fellowship.
