helped me achieve mine.”
“Thanks for funding this

Iowa’s Community Colleges benefit communities through
increased employment opportunities, improved business
revenues and a high-skilled workforce.
Community Colleges provide a skilled workforce to meet
employer’s demands in the future. Seven out of 10 fastest
growing occupations in Iowa between 2008 and 2018 require
postsecondary education. Nearly 34% of open positions in
Iowa require an education level equal to an associate’s
degree or higher. In addition, Community College students
completing their degree have a 24% rate of return on their

QUAD CITIES VISITING ARTIST SERIES RETURNS
Clinton Community College is pleased to announce upcoming performances for the 2013-14 Visiting Artist season.
This is the 40th year that CCC has offered these performances for the community as part of the Quad Cities Arts, a
program that strives to make the program accessible to people of all walks of life, including students, seniors, and
working people. Performances will be held in both Clinton and in Maquoketa throughout the year.
Scheduled performances include:
Clinton Community College – CCC Technology Center, 941 Manufacturing Drive, Clinton.
Meg Okura – Asian Jazz Crossover - Wednesday, October 9 – 7:00 p.m.
Composer, erhu player and premiere jazz violinist Meg Okura leads of groups of virtuosi inventing
and defining “World chamber jazz” today. The ensemble mixes a classically trained mastery of
strings, piano and drums with quick-witted compositional twist performed with high energy.
Jen Chapin Trio - Folk Trio - Tuesday, March 25– 7:00 p.m.
Praised as “…soulfully poetic urban folk music”, this is a blend of funky folk and earthy jazz. Chapin
has been honored by the USA Songwriting Competition.
CCC Maquoketa Center – CCC Maquoketa Center, 501 West Washington Street, Maquoketa.
Destino – Pop Opera Quartet - Tuesday, December 3 – 7:00 p.m.
Made up of 3 young men and a young woman that love making beautiful music
together, Destino has created something completely different – two very different
voices and two very different instrumentalists, all able to stand on their own, but
together forming a truly talented and unique troop.
Galumpha - Comedic Dance - Tuesday, January 21 – 7:00 p.m.
Combining stunning acrobatics, striking visual effects, physical comedy and
inventive choreography, Galumpha brings to life a world of innovation, beauty,
muscle and merriment. The three performers create a sensory feast of images
ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime.

This new Advanced Manufacturing Center is located on the high school grounds adjacent to the CCC-Maquoketa
Center, and is attached by a passageway to the building that contains the high school welding program. During the
construction project, funds were invested to remodel the exterior of the welding shop and create a larger remodeled
classroom for students. The new addition is approximately 3,300 square feet of lab space for students to work on
manufacturing equipment. The manufacturing center houses four horizontal mills, four vertical mills, eight Haas CNC
simulators, a robotic plasma cutter, and two robotic welders.
Over $550,000 has been invested into the new center from the Maquoketa School District, Clinton Community College/
Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, and through an Accelerated Career Education grant from the State of Iowa. This
facility will be used for training of high school students, as well as, those in the surrounding communities seeking to
upgrade skills or be trained in the entry level skills necessary for work in manufacturing technology.
The first class in Introduction to Manufacturing will begin on July 22nd. For information, contact Clinton Community
College at 563-244-7001.

Outstanding Faculty/Staff Member is Shirley Turnis
Shirley has taken on new duties this academic year being named a mentor/trainer for online instructors on the Clinton
campus. She holds help sessions, and works with individual instructors with their technology problems. Along with assisting
instructors on campus, she has attended trainings to keep current with our online consortium.
In addition to the mentor trainer, Shirley has been an active member of the district Developmental Math committee, revamping
the Developmental Education Math offerings to assist students working toward the college level Math to give them the best
courses to take to reach their academic goals. Shirley has piloted 2 of the courses on our campus, Prealgebra, and Math
Literacy. Shirley is also an advisor for Phi Theta Kappa. She is involved in many aspects of the honor society from
preparing eligible student lists to writing the script and program for the induction ceremony. She has taken PTK students
to volunteer at the Children’s Cancer camp.
Most importantly, Shirley is an excellent Math instructor both in the classroom and online. She is very patient with students,
and cares about their success in the classroom. This semester she even held office hours in the open computer lab, so
Math Literacy students could come in to use the MyMath Lab and have assistance from Shirley if needed. Shirley Turnis
is an outstanding example of an instructor going above and beyond, not only for students, but her fellow faculty members
as well.
Outstanding Alumnus is Ruthann Papke
Ruthann Papke is a proud graduate of Clinton Community College, attending college at a time when her three children
were young AND she was assisting on the family farm.
Ruthann served as Vice President of Patient Care Services for Mercy Medical Center – Clinton. With her encouragement,
numerous healthcare professionals have pursued higher education degrees & training. In retirement, Ruthann continues
to serve as a Magnate Appraiser for the American Nurses Association nurturing other healthcare facilities throughout the
country as an ANA magnate appraiser.
As a community volunteer, Ruthann nurtures organizations such as the Clinton Library Board and our own Paul B. Sharar
Foundation where she will complete a two-year term as president in August. Under her leadership the Sharar Foundation
continues to grow and expand assistance to the students and programs of CCC. Ruthann supports education – literallythrough the Ruthann Papke Nursing Scholarship at Clinton Community College.
A vocal supporter of the college, Ruthann has written Guest Editorials, promoted CCC activities and continues to encourage
people to explore CCC offerings in health care.

OUTST
ANDING!
OUTSTANDING!
The Clinton Community College Alumni Association honored outstanding contributions to CCC by awarding their 32nd
Annual Outstanding Awards on Tuesday, May 14.
Outstanding Business Associate is Tim Wright of Wagner Pharmacy
Dr. Timothy A Wright is the owner and CEO at Wagner Pharmacy Company,
and is responsible for the business planning, financial management, and
marketing and sales aspects of the organization. Tim is a 1999 Fulton
High School graduate, completed his Associates of Arts and Associates
of Science degrees at Clinton Community College, and enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps. While continuing his pursuit of his education,
service in the USMC included 2 years of active service, followed by a
deployment to Fallujah, Iraq. During breaks from his service, Tim
completed his Doctorate in Pharmacy from Midwestern University’s
Chicago College of Pharmacy.
Tim and wife Nora began working for Wagner Pharmacy Company in
2008, and purchased the company in 2010. Since 2011, Wagner Pharmacy has funded a scholarship for students studying
pre-pharmacy through the Paul B. Sharar Foundation. In 2012, Tim served as the Keynote Speaker at the annual CCC
Alumni Association Student Leader Luncheon. Tim represents CCC as an outstanding graduate and an outstanding
business partner.
Outstanding Friend of the College is Karen Friis
Karen Friis is the “Go-To” person the community depends on. She has served as Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce
Administrative Services Coordinator since 1995 and is such a valuable contact for so many in the community. Karen has
served on the CCC Administrative & Office Support Advisory Panel for 10 years. In addition to assisting in a vital role for
one of the CCC programs, Karen is a willing partner in gathering information about the community, share information via
the Chamber and look for suggestions to connect to the community.
Karen is one of those people who willingly shares of herself. She serves on the advisory committee for our AOS program
and is always willing to provide guidance to help us improve the program. Anytime we need to advertise an event at CCC,
Karen helps to post the event with the weekly email from the Chamber. She also gathers information for the CVB. In all she
does, she does so in a thoughtful, kind, caring manner. Karen is a friend to all of us, but especially CCC. Outstanding!
Outstanding Volunteer is Amy Leslie
The 2013 Outstanding Volunteer is Amy Leslie. Amy represents us by her student involvement, as a voice for the student
body, as a strong advocate for CCC and our Student Success Center. Amy has been instrumental in college events such
as the Cruising with the Cougars Car Show, Adopt R Campus and Highway Cleanups, Stop the Hate/Show the Love walk,
MLK celebration, evening refreshments and plus many more.
Amy spoke out on behalf of other students by attending the Legislative session in Des Moines, representing the Student
Body during Congressman Bruce Braley’s visit, attending the APCA/SWLC (Association for Programing of Campus Activities/
Statewide Leadership Conference), attending the Social Injustice roundtable discussions, and attending the State domestic
violence and transitional housing forum. Amy is dedicated, energetic, enthusiastic and committed and truly outstanding!
Outstanding Graduate is Cory Reuter
Cory Reuter is an excellent example of a nontraditional student who returns to college for a new career. Cory turned his
recovery from a major injury into strengthening his mind and body. Cory earned an Associate of Science Degree in PreEngineering and will continuing his education at the University of Iowa in the fall.
His academic achievements include President’s and Deans’ lists, Phi Theta Kappa honorary society, Paul B. Sharar
Foundation scholarship recipient, and recognition as a scholar on the 2013 All-Iowa Academic Team.
Cory has been an excellent tutor in the Student Success Center. He is humble and is gracious in thanking those who have
helped in along the way. He has been a cheerleader for many, and always is encouraging to all students. Cory is truly
outstanding!

N ANCY’ S S TOR
Y
TORY
My name is Nancy Baker – Nancy Paddock when
I attended Clinton Junior College, graduating in
1951.
I now live in Clive and have been there with my
husband Keith for close to 49 years. We have
two grown daughters. I finished up at the
University of Iowa, majoring in Spanish. I ended
up in Des Moines working at an insurance
company for a number of years, from which I
resigned in 1966 to raise my daughters.
I remember my years at CJC fondly. It was quite
small then, held in the Clinton High School building,
and our little group had to stick together. We
were a mixture; new graduates of Clinton’s then
three high schools, and of nearby small towns,
some veterans, and a few from relatively far away.
Who can forget the “Showboat” revues we put
on, the card games in the Lounge, the club we
women students had, and the basketball games.
Since we were small, there was opportunity for
anyone willing to participate in the school’s
activities.
Since most of my instructors were teachers I had
in high school, one that stands out in my mind
was Mr. Smith, speech instructor, as I had not had
speech in high school. Mr. Smith had some
interesting stories to tell, and I enjoyed the class
very much. They all taught well, and could give individualized instruction with small classes. Of course, Dean Paul B.
Sharar is prominent in any memories from then, with his steady direction.
What are your memories of Clinton Community College? Which instructors inspired you to success in the classroom
or in a career? What activities and friends bring a smile, even years later? How did CCC help to build the foundation
for your future? Share those with us by contacting [email protected].

According to CCC Library Specialist Sally Meyer, “The LearningExpress Library online platform
provides over 770 of the most up-to-date test preparation and skill-building resources, helping
both students and adults prepare for a wide range of academic and career oriented exams,
as well as improve basic skills in reading, writing and math.”
Please note: one must create a personal account while on campus, which would then be
used to gain access off campus. For assistance contact CCC at 563-244-7001.
