Delicate, long hair - how to groom this classy breed
Antique breed of Asian origin, the Afghan hound is an attractive and
classy dog, quiet, sweet and affectionate. The hair is long and the texture
fine on the ribs, the limbs and hips: in elderly dogs the coat is short and
thick on the shoulders and back.
Here are some tips to groom that dog at best.
1 Given the hair is very delicate, bathe the dog once a week with Super
Cleaning Shampoo, which cleanses delicately and nourishes the coat, as
it is rich in conditioner; the coat is thick, not fluffy and easy to comb.
2 Use Product Stabilizer once every two baths: dilute two spoonfuls in 2
litres water, pour on the coat, wait for one minute and rinse.
3 If it is a regular bath or you are preparing the dog for a show, dilute
three spoonfuls of Botanical Conditioner in 2 litres water, pour on the
coat and rinse. Botanical Conditioner nourishes the hair and prevents
tangles. Rinsing must be light so as to leave a veil of product on the coat
to reach good texture.
4 If it is a maintenance bath or the coat needs to be textured, use a
stronger mix: dilute two spoonfuls of Super-Rich Conditioner and two of
Pure Lanolin Plus in two glasses of hot water, mix thoroughly and add 2
litres of lukewarm water. Pour on the coat and rinse. Lanolin, which is not
soluble in water, will not be eliminated but just well distributed.
5 Preferably do not use an air blower to dry the coat. The hairdryer is
better as, being more delicate, it does not risk to tangle the hair: use it
on the area you are brushing and treat one area after the other, leaving
the head as the last. Use a Pin Brush with white pad, very soft, and 35 mm
long pins.
6 After you have brushed all the coat, use the De Matting Comb, with 5
centimetres long pins, large and well spaced, to check that no mats are
left; avoid combs with close pins so as not to break hair tips. If the
Afghan hound has tangles, dry the coat with the help of a soft Slick Brush.
In difficult cases you may need a hook rake to split tangles making sure
not to break the hair tips.
7 After the bath, wrap the hair with bakery paper or with hair bands.
8 Given the breed standard suggests ‘natural’ grooming, make sure not
to leave any scissors sign when you care for the feet, the fringes and
ears; if necessary, correct with a toothed comb. The area to correct is the
upper line, where the coat of the elderly dog must be short and adhere
to the skin; the younger hounds have wool on the back, which turns into
a natural coat when they grow. If necessary, you can make little corrections: create a symmetric back by using a pumice stone and pluck little
hair tufts. A young Afghan hound may change colour tone while growing; top beauty in an Afghan occurs at the age of three to four years.You
may decide to use a clipper or teethed scissors under the chin to
enhance the neck’s length. Clippers are however not advised as they
may make the hair become woolly and mat: the cut with teethed scissors
ensures better results.
9 Use Fabulous Grooming Spray as final touch and also when you simply
need to brush the coat. This product nourishes the hair and protects it
from brush strokes.
10 When the coat requires further cleaning - for instance the paws after
a walk - use Self Rinse Shampoo: dilute two spoonfuls of that product in
two glasses of water, sprinkle and brush.

con piccole correzioni: create una sella simmetrica con
l’aiuto di una pietra pomice e strappate piccole ciocche
di pelo con le dita (plucking). Un soggetto giovane può
cambiare tonalità di colore durante la crescita e raggiungerà la sua bellezza massima intorno ai tre-quattro anni.
Potete decidere di fare il sottogola con la tosatrice oppure
con la forbice dentata, tentando di dare al collo un
aspetto il più lungo possibile. È sconsigliato l’utilizzo della
tosatrice, perché con il taglio a macchinetta il pelo diventa lanoso e si infeltrisce: molto meglio il lavoro fatto a forbice anche per creare la sella o semplicemente per accorciare il pelo.
9 Utilizzate il Fabulous Grooming Spray spazzolando nel verso del pelo, sia come tocco finale prering, sia quando è necessario spazzolare semplicemente il mantello. Questo prodotto rinnova il nutrimento e protegge dal passaggio della spazzola.
10 Quando il pelo richiede un supplemento di pulizia, per esempio sulle zampe dopo una passeggiata, usate il Self
Rinse Shampoo: diluite due cucchiai di prodotto in due bicchieri d’acqua, spruzzate e spazzolate. (M.C.) ZOOMARK INTERNATIONAL 2011: NOI C’ERAVAMO. Grande
