HOLY YEAR OF MERCY / L’ANNO SANTO DELLA MISERICORDIA
14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
After strong language about the difficulties of discipleship,
Jesus immediately appoints 72 people to go ahead of him to
every town and the places He plans to visit, proclaiming that
the Kingdom of God is at hand. He sends them in pairs. In
the Law of Moses two witnesses were needed for a
testimony to be credible. Jesus admits that it will be difficult;
He is sending them out like lambs among wolves. Yet they
are to bring nothing with them, not even a money bag or
sandals. They are to greet no one on the way so as not to
be distracted from their mission. When they enter a house,
their message is to simply be “peace.” The response they
will receive may be positive or negative. Either way, they are
to know that the Kingdom of God is at hand. They are not to
demand special treatment and they are to eat and drink
whatever is given to them. They are to stay in one house
and are not to look around for one that provides better
accommodations. They are to heal the sick as a sign that
the Kingdom of God is at hand for them. Like Jesus'
miracles, healing is a sign of the coming of the kingdom. If
the town will not receive them, they are to shake the dust
from their feet and move on.

JULY 3, 2016
MESSAGES FROM CARDINAL COLLINS:
1) PASSING OF EUTHANASIA BILL C-14
Euthanasia comes to Canada: “There are two ways, the
way to life and the way to death, and there is a great
difference between them.” These wise words from an
ancient Christian writer come to mind as we mark
Parliament’s enactment of the law implementing the
Supreme Court’s decision on euthanasia and assisted
suicide, which is a fundamentally misguided decision.
Though I do not question the good intentions of either
judges or legislators, their decisions have set our country
down a path that leads not simply, and obviously, towards
physical death for an increasing number of our fellow
citizens, but towards a grim experience for everyone in our
society of the coldness of spiritual death. That death is
found in a loss of respect for the dignity of the human
person, in a deadening pressure upon the vulnerable to be
gone, and in an assault upon the sanctuary of conscience to
be suffered by good individuals and institutions who seek
only to heal.

www.archtoronto.org.
2) FAMILY OF FAITH CAMPAIGN
Late last week Father Carlos Sierra received a letter from
Cardinal Collins addressed to the Parishioners of
St. Brigid’s and to Father Carlos. Cardinal Collins expressed
his heartfelt gratitude for the generous support of the Family
of Faith Campaign. The Family of Faith Campaign has
helped the Archdiocese raise the resources needed to
accomplish the mission of reaching out to those who have
been away from the church and to care for those that are
with the church week after week. Already to date, our
financial support has enabled the following:
Care for young people by providing subsidies to hire youth
ministers for parishes struggling financially.
Evangelize and communicate the faith through the launch of
80 new parish websites.
Support extensive restoration work underway at St.
Michael’s Cathedral.
Cardinal Collins concluded that the Archdiocese views every
donation as a sacred trust, used responsibly to maximize
each gift.
3) WELCOME BOOKLET
Last week, Cardinal Collins sent a personal note to Father
Carlos Sierra and to the Pastoral Council thanking them for
the gift of our Welcome Booklet and expressed his
appreciation of this communications piece. He ended his
note by expressing abundant blessings to the team and to
the entire St. Brigid’s Community.
MODESTY IN DRESS AT MASS
As we enter the summer months and temperatures continue
to rise, we remind all Parishioners that dressing
HOLY YEAR OF MERCY / L’ANNO SANTO DELLA MISERICORDIA
appropriately and modestly to Mass shows mindfulness
toward God, as well as respect for the sanctity of the service
and the experience of fellow parishioners. Please be aware
that there is in fact an appropriate dress code for attending
all Masses. We are simply asking for the dignity and
decorum that the Church calls for.
Please remember that God has invited us into his home; let
us continue to respect our place of prayer and worship.

We, the St. Brigid's Roman Catholic community, are united in dynamic faith in Jesus Christ. Our parish
comes together through the risen Lord, the Eucharist, and community celebration. We live the Gospel in
our diversity and through inclusion, compassion, justice and commitment. By welcoming, giving and
sharing, we demonstrate our personal faith in God, both within and beyond our parish.
