How to describe ability in the Past
Come descrivere le abilità nel Passato
Before studying the other past tenses, we are
going to see how to describe ability in the past,
using "could", which is the past of "can", and
using "was/were able to" or "managed to".
Prima di studiare gli altri tempi passati, vediamo
come si descrivono le qualità al passato
utilizzando “could”, che è il passato di “can”
(potere/riuscire), e "was/were able to"
(era/erano capaci di) o "managed to" (riuscire
a).
"Could" is not only the past of "can". It has other
meanings but we are not going to study these
meanings now.
“Could” non è solo il passato di “can”. Questo,
infatti, ha anche altri significati, ma non li
studiamo adesso.
"Could" and the negative "could not", whose
contracted form is "couldn't", are invariable.
The auxiliary "did" is not used and questions are
formed by placing "could" before the subject.
"Could" e la forma negativa "could not", la cui
forma contratta è "couldn't", sono invariabili.
L’ausiliare “did” non viene usato e
l’interrogativa si forma mettendo “could”
davanti al soggetto.
Here are some examples:
Ecco alcuni esempi:
- "Could you swim when you were five?"
- "I could swim when I was four"
- “Sapevi nuotare quando avevi cinque anni?”
- “Sapevo nuotare quando avevo quattro anni”
Note that here we are describing general ability
(the ability to do something at any time). We are
not describing particular ability (the ability to do
something on one occasion).
Osserva che qui si sta descrivendo una abilità
generica (la capacità di fare qualcosa in
qualsiasi momento). Non si sta descrivendo una
qualità specifica (l’abilità di fare qualcosa in
un’occasione).
In past tense affirmative sentences and in
questions asking about a particular occasion
when someone actually did something we do not
use "could". We use "was/were able to".
- "Were you able to do the shopping? Yes, the
supermarket was open so I was able to get the
eggs"
It is also possible to use "managed to".
- "Did you manage to phone? Yes, I found his
number so I managed to phone"
Non si usa “could” nelle frasi affermative al
passato e nelle interrogative, in cui si chiede
di un’occasione specifica, quando qualcuno ha
effettivamente compiuto qualcosa. Si impiega
"was/were able to" (era/erano in grado di).
- “Sei riuscito a fare la spesa? Si, il
supermercato era aperto così sono riuscito a
prendere le uova”
È anche possibile usare "managed to"
(riuscire).
- “Sei riuscito a telefonare? Si, ho trovato il suo
numero così sono riuscito a chiamare”
