Betsy Biars is one of America’s most famous children’s writers. She is the winner of lots of
prizes with her best-selling books such as The Summer of the Swans, The Midnight Fox, etc. Her
latest creation, Coast to Coast, is the story of a fantastic journey across the USA. It is already
very popular. Where does Betsy get her inspiration from? “I start with a plot, then create the
characters. Sometimes they are based on people I know and sometimes I am inspired by weird
and wonderful people I read about in newspapers”.
Betsy and her husband are both qualified pilots and spend most of their free time up, up and
away in their collection of wonderful flying machines. Betsy also likes snakes a lot. Not the

cacciatore e mi piace l’avventura.
Ogni mattina ci alziamo presto, ci vuole mezz’ora per prepararci per la giornata. Noi cavalchiamo o
camminiamo, e i muli portano le nostre tende e il nostro cibo. La gente pensa che siamo strani.
Quando mostriamo loro uno specchio hanno paura e fuggono, oppure ridono quando vedono le
loro facce.
Quando troviamo un buon posto per dormire ci fermiamo e i servitori accendono un fuoco e
preparano la cena. Ci serve un fuoco per cucinare e per proteggerci da(gli) animali feroci.
Una mattina mi sveglio presto e vedo un grosso scorpione nella tenda. Non voglio muovermi, sono
spaventato. Poi penso: “Forse lo scorpione è addormentato.” Mi alzo lentamente, prendo il fucile e
vado all’ingresso della tenda. Sono pronto a sparare quando un servo mi vede e dice: “Perché
volete uccidere quello scorpione? Non è un nemico. Ha una famiglia.” Una famiglia? Sì certo, penso,
e la giungla è la sua casa. Io sono solo un viaggiatore e questa terra non è mia. Perché (la) gente
