moderna e dinamica in costante crescita.
influenzare positivamente e in maniera significativa
aziendale, effettuando studi finalizzati all’alta qualificazione.

The University of Sannio is a modern and dynamic institution in constant evolution. It is a significant part of Benevento, a small town that offers a
pleasant studying environment. With almost 8.000
students, the university gives the town a youthful
spirit and a vibrant atmosphere. Being proud of the
quality of life in Benevento, also we believe in the
highest quality of academic life. Our aim is not merely to train properly-educated graduates in a particular field, but also to fully develop human beings
with an extensive view of the world incorporating
excellent communication skills and the will to continue growing in his or her specialization.
For this reason we firmly believe in internationalization, which our young University has always
nourished since its birth. The number of exchange
programs and affiliations with partner institutions
around the world, along with the continuinglygrowing number of foreign students by sharing
different experiences, can influence positively and
significantly the education of our students and citizens alike.
Students who choose our University can deepen
their studies in the fields of Law, Statistics, the Environment, Geology, Biology, Biotechnologies, Civil
Engineering, Computer Engineering, Energy Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Economics and Business Organization, always aiming for a very high
qualification.
I am sure that the commitment and the availability of our academic staff can make your stay in
Benevento culturally and socially stimulating.
We would be pleased and honoured if you decide to become part of our community and build your
future life at our university.

Delegate for Unisannio International Relations
scientifica.
Argomenti come globalizzazione, internazionalizzazione e solidarietà, però, possono trasformarsi in esperienze reali solo grazie a voi studenti.
The main goal of the University of Sannio is to
exploit inter-university cooperation and support a
real process of internationalization of teaching and
research.
Issues such as globalization, internationalization, and solidarity can become real-life experiences only with the support of the students. That is
why we firmly believe and promote the Erasmus
project, a unique human experience contributing
to the personal growth of students so overcoming
the numerous obstacles that are still encountered
in the integration of different cultures and worlds.
The University of Sannio encourages enthusiasm
and strength of its young people. Through innovative educational programs and a new structure dedicated to the management of international cooperation, it aims to provide excellence both in education
and in science. In addition, the city of Benevento,
with its historical and artistic heritage, archeological sites, friendly hospitality, is the perfect place to
spend a period of study and life.
The desire of young students to grow and improve constantly, both in terms of human and cultural
aspects, can become an unforgettable experience
here in Benevento.
In this guide you can find information about the
University and the city of Benevento to help make
your stay as welcoming as possible.
It is a contribution to facilitate your meeting with
a new reality.
I welcome those who decide to become part of
our community, promoting the dissemination of our
message of intercultural exchange for a fair globalization and a peaceful coexistence among people.

The Erasmus program is considered one of the
most successful programs in the EU area. In more
than 22 years it has allowed 2,000,000 citizens to
learn about other countries as well as studying in
one of the several European Universities participating in the program.
There are still many obstacles, such as the lack
of language skills, barriers of financial nature and
also the lack of information and knowledge about
the Institution where students decide to spend a
period of study.
Mistakengly we often talk about student outgoing study but incoming study also has a great
importance: what do we do to introduce ourselves?
How do we inform ourself about our institution?
The European Commission helps us in this difficult task and gives us a format that can be used
to provide all the information a student needs: the
ECTS guide.
The University of Sannio is committed to this,
opening its doors to many young Europeans who
choose to study in Italy and especially in Benevento: Welcome!

Presidente Onorario ESN Maleventum
Honorary President of ESN Maleventum
My ‘tribe’ and myself, the name I like to use for
ESN members, are proud of being able to help, year
by year, the Erasmus students coming to our town.
We are a group of friends voluntarily trying to make
the stay of the foreign students more welcoming.
ESN Maleventum is a well-established reality inside
our University.
One of our main objectives is to promote knowledge, exchange and social networks in order to
overcome the stereotypes that can lead to intolerance and exclusion. Apart from being the honorary
president of this wonderful society, I like to think of
myself as a ‘lifetime Erasmus’, with ideas and values that bring me closer to the status of a European
citizen.
Erasmus changes your life! As ESN Maleventum
we strongly believe in it, and feel it every day!

ERASMUS STUDENTS AND ECTS SYSTEM
cooperazione nell’istruzione in tutta l’Unione. Agli
e gli esami sostenuti all’estero siano pienamente
dei Paesi partecipanti al programma, o avere ottenuto lo stato di rifugiato o apolide;
dell’Unione Europea;
d) aver completato il primo anno del corso di studi;

or not fees are paid at the University of origin).
While abroad, students continue to benefit from
financial support or grant at national level or
from other sources.
d) to have completed the first year of study;
e) to have knowledge (even basic) of the language
of the hosting country. Usually Universities provide language courses before the departure. For
less spoken languages, some intensive courses
are provided - ILPC (European Commission finances ILPC courses for countries whose languages
are not highly used and taught abroad, awarding
specific fellowships);
f) not to have been part of Erasmus before;

Vademecum ESN Maleventum per chi sceglie Benevento
ESN Maleventum handbook for students coming to Benevento
membro dell’Unione Europea e i cittadini extracomunitari.
After leaving Benevento, most of foreign students go back home with a bit of melancholy, taking
with them many good memories.
Incoming students can be divided in two main
groups: students from EU and students from outside the EU. For EU students, except in particular cases, stay permits are not necessary. While
for non EU students, it is necessary and there
are long and tiring bureaucratic procedures to go
through to receive it.
Sojourn procedure

Per ottenere la Carta di soggiorno
http://www.esteri.it/MAE/EN/Ministero/Servizi/Stranieri/
in Italia.

The sojourn permit has been replaced by a declaration of presence on Italian territory.
Only this sojourn permit (‘permesso di soggiorno’), which is issued for the reason and for
the period indicated on the visa, authorises an
alien to stay in Italy.
For those aliens coming from countries that do
not apply the Schengen Convention the obligation to make a declaration of presence is fulfilled
by the application of the USV sticker on the travel
document at the moment of border control.
For aliens coming from countries that apply
the Schengen Convention it is required to file a
declaration of presence within 8 days of arrival
at the police headquarters (“Questura”) in thethe province in which he/she is staying, using
the proper form.

chi

90 giorni, dovranno richiedere, entro otto giorni
sottoposto a rilievi fotodattiloscopici.

For those staying in hotels and other accommodation facilities, the declaration of
presence is handled by these entities upon
check-in, a copy of which is supplied to the
guest to be displayed to authorities upon
eventual request.
Non-EU citizens in possession of a National Visa (NV) for stays longer than 90
d a y s are required, within eight days from entry
into Italy, to request a stay permit (permesso di
soggiorno) from the Italian authorities, and will
be subject to photo and fingerprint registration.
Under Schengen rules, the stay permit is issued by the Police (Questura). Foreigners entering Italy for periods not to exceed 90 days, pursuant to Law no. 68/2007, whether or not subject
to visa requirements, do not need to apply for a
sojourn permit.
It is necessary to go to the Police Headquarters

within 8 days of your arrival, and ask for the residence papers.
You need the following documents:

BENVENUTI A BENEVENTO / WELCOME TO BENEVENTO
Welcome to Benevento
The oldest cultural records in the Benevento area
and its province date back to the Paleolithic Age. Archaelogical findings of lake dwellings in the Castelvenere area and several findings elsewhere record
prehistoric man’s presence in this province.
With regard to the origin of the town of Benevento, legend has it that it was founded by the mythical
Diomedes, who landed on the Apulian coasts after
the fall of Troy. Certainly, it is known it was inhabited
by the Samnites, from both the Irpino and Caudino lineage, due to cultural findings and historical
discoveries such as the archaeological area in Cellarulo district, which proves the existence of a permanent settlement at the junction of rivers Sabato
and Calore, whose population was committed to
the production and trade of wool and clay.
A flourishing centre for the Samnite civilization,
it was reported for the first time in history when the
Samnites, skilled and brave warriors, defeated the
mighty Roman army in the battle of the “Forche Caudine” (321 BC), thanks to a clever strategic manoeuvre by general Ponzio Telesino.
THE ROMAN PERIOD
After the “Forche Caudine” battle, the Samnites
were in their turn defeated and, by the time of the
Third Samnite War (298-290 BC), they were subdued by the Romans. The name of the town, which
was originally called Maleventum, was changed into
Beneventum by the Romans, in order to celebrate
their victory over Pyrrhus in 275 BC.
Thus, after being conquered by the Romans, Benevento experienced not only political and military
domination, but also and above all cultural domination. The town was targeted by those travelling,
along the Via Appia, from Rome to Apulia, especially Brindisi and, finally, the East; therefore, it soon
became a key and strategic political and economic centre. Over the centuries, the Romans made
the town beautiful and rich in important buildings
which are still visible within the town’s walls, proof
of its glorious past.

Sotto
The most remarkable monuments from this period are: “Arco di Traiano”, the Roman Theatre, the
so called Arch of the “Sacramento”, Leproso Bridge,
Valentino Bridge and precious evidence of the temple
of Isis.
ARCO DI TRAIANO - Built between 144 and 117 AD
by the Senate and the Roman People as a tribute
to Emperor Traiano, at the beginning of Via Traiana
which shortened the route from Benevento to Brindisi. The arch is one of the most important records
of Roman art. The various sculptures refer to the goals he achieved in Rome, in the Province and in the
town of Benevento. It’s 15.6 metres high with a 8.6
metres barrel vault. It’s perfectly preserved, thanks
to recent consolidation and restoration works. In
the Middle Ages, it was the town’s main gate, called
“Porta Aurea”, later isolated by Pope Pius IX.
THE ROMAN THEATRE - The theatre has a diameter of 90 metres and preserves the first and part of
the second of the three tiers of twenty-five arches
that formed it. It is one of the largest and finest ancient theatres that still exist. It was built during Hadrian’s times and later restored by Caracalla.
THE ARCH OF THE “SACRAMENTO” - Notable Roman monument from the post Traiano period. It is
built on brick pillars with a diameter of five metres
and has niches for statues. It takes its name from
the nearby Chapel of the Sacramento, destroyed by
the bombings in September 1943.
LEPROSO BRIDGE - Via Appia entered Benevento
by this bridge, which takes its name from a leper
hospital that was located nearby. The river Sabato, flowing under its four arches (once five), recalls ancient legends of witches who danced moonlit
sarabands on its banks, under an old walnut tree.
“Mulino Pacifico” is located near the bridge. Built
in the 18th century and recently restored, it is now
used for cultural activities.
THE Longobard PERIOD
PERIODO LONGOBARDO

The fall of the Roman Empire marked a period of
decline also in Benevento, which rose to new glory
under the Longobard domination.
At the beginning of this domination (571), under
Zottone I, Benevento was a duchy; then, following
the fall of the Kingdom of Pavia (774), it was turned
into a Principality by Arechi II. Arechi, being passionate about art and culture, built many architectural
works, like the extention of the town walls after creating the Civitas nova (now the Triggio), St. Sophia’s
Church and the Benedictine monastery with its fine

Monetazione longobarda / Longobard Coin
A Benevento
i Duchi longobardi emisero solidi e tremissi
disco principale, tre pendenti a cinque maglie
ciascuno, gemme a goccia terminali.
Una curiosità: le popolazione barbariche
interpretavano le monete delle culture con
cui venivano in contatto esclusivamente quali
elementi preziosi e decorativi; tale tendenza
portava spesso all’inserimento della moneta
funzione.
The logo of the University of Sannio is a
gold coin of the Longobard mint of Benevento
representing the duke Arechi II’s face. In the
territories of the Lombard kingdom, from the
568 B.C., the use of golden coins quickly spread in imitation of the Byzantine coins, produced in the regal mint in Pavia. The coinages
of the Tuscia and the Dukedom of Benevento
were particularly characteristic. In Benevento,
the Lombard Dukes issued solidi and tremissi
in the Byzantine way, marked, beginning from
the kingdom of Gisulfo I (689 -706), with their
initials.
The activity of the mint of Benevento also
continued for a long time after king Desiderio’s defeat and the end of the Kingdom.
Particularly, the logo of Unisannio represents a golden tremisse of Arechi II (774 -787)
coined in the mint of Benevento. The prince,
founder of the famous abbey of Saint Sofia,
hands on the right shoulder the symbol of the
power, a fibula constituted by a main disk, three pendants and gems.
A curiosity: the barbaric population considered the coins only precious and decorative
elements; indeed, coins were inserted into
necklaces and valuable objects.

pecora che vi erano state appese.
CHIESA E CHIOSTRO DI SANTA SOFIA - Il monumento
cloister. Another notable feature of the Longobard
period is St. Ilario’s Church, located close to the “Arco di
Traiano”. Arechi’s court became a splendid cultural
centre, brightened by the genius of Paolo Diacono.
The “Benevento writing system” started to take on
its original features, qualifying the minor Longobardia “scriptoria” that produced magnificent liturgical
hagiographic and classical codes, today preserved
in the most important libraries in the world.
The economy, too, had a strong vibe thanks to the
mint introduced to stamp coins (soldo aureo). The
legend of the witches also dates back to this period.
The Longobardian soldiers used to meet around
a tree consecrated to the god Wothan, in a spot full
of walnut trees, near Benevento. There, weaving
whirling carousels and in a frenzied race, they tried to bite off the sheep skins hung on the brances.
The knights’ whirling dance turned into the witches’
dance in popular fantasy. After the Longobards
were converted to Catholicism by Bishop Barbato,
the walnut tree was pulled down in order to celebrate the triumphant struggle led by the Bishop Saint
against the witches and the infernal powers.
SANTA SOFIA’S CHURCH AND CLOISTER - The most
evocative monument in the town is Santa Sofia’s
Church, a masterpiece of the Middle Ages. Since
2011 it has been included in the World Heritage List
of the Unesco. Founded in the VIII century by the Longobards, it has an unusual half circular plan and half
CHIESA DI S. ILARIO - A breve distanza dall’Arco

star-shaped structure, accentuated by pillars and columns (of Roman origins) and characterized by the intricate design of the vault and arches. The cloister is
magnificent and dates back to the XII century. It is in
fact a rare example of middle age architecture, with
its important capitels, columns and pulvinoes which,
through significant symbols, symbolizing the contrast between good and evil, the succession of the
seasons and the various historical periods. It hosts
the Museum of Sannio, rich of artifacts of Samnite,
Greek and Egyptian ancient cultures.
ST. ILARIO’S CHURCH - The church stands within walking distance of the “Arco di Traiano”. Dating back to
the 10th century and recently restored, it features one
aisle and now hosts the museum of the “Arco di Traiano”.
TOWER OF THE CHAIN - It is a ruin of a Longobard fortress, located near an ancient entry gate to the town,
called “Porta Arsa”.
THE PONTIFICAL PERIOD
PERIODO PONTIFICIO
After the death of Landolf VI (1077), the last Longobard prince, Benevento became a pontifical domination until 1860. During this long period, Federico II
and Manfredi tried to conquer Benevento. In 1266,
while fighting against Charles of Anjou, Manfredi
died and was temporarily buried in “cò del ponte”
(Dante, Purgatorio, Canto III).
A church fiefdom, Benevento was first ruled by a
rector, then by a governor and finally, after the Congress of Vienna, by an apostolic delegate. In 1806, it

mossa nella World Heritage List dell’Unesco.
suoi importanti capitelli, colonne e pulvini romanici

Museo diocesano.

During the pontifical period, Benevento was
chaired by cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini, who later
became pope Benedict XIII.
The following monuments date back to the pontifical ruling: Rocca dei Rettori, the Cathedral, Paolo
V Palace, St. Bartolomeo’s Basilica, Madonna delle Grazie’s Church.
THE CATHEDRAL - Built in the Longobard period and
consecrated by Bishop Davide in 780 AD, it was enlarged in the 12th century. Destroyed by the bombings in September 1943, it still boasts a Romanic
façade and the recently restored bronze door from
the XIII century. The Diocesan Museum is located in
the Medieval crypt rooms in the Basilica Cathedral.
Madonna delle Grazie’S CHURCH
Impressive building in neoclassical style, built in
the second half of the XIX century, It houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, made by Giovanni

ROCCA DEI RETTORI - Costruita sotto Papa Giovanni
egizi eretti in Benevento nell’anno 88 d.C. sotto
l’imperatore Domiziano. L’altro obelisco è custodito
nel Museo del Sannio.
BASILICA DI SAN BARTOLOMEO - Ricostruita lungo la

the original basilica destroyed by the 1688 earthquake, it was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XII
in 1729. Attributed to architect Filippo Raguzzini, it
houses the Holy Reliquaries of the Saint.
THE “RISORGIMENTO” PERIOD
After the unification of Italy, Benevento was freed from the pontifical domination by the Garibaldi’s
party, in a bloodless coup. It was made Province
of Italy by decree signed by Giorgio Pallavicini, on
October 25th, 1860. After the national government
Domenico Brunelli e S. AGATA DE’ GOTI, bellissima

were devastated by rebel movements against the
government troops. The rebels were suppressed
by tough military action that ended with the fierce
massacre of the Pontelandolfo and Casalduni (brigandage) populations by the “bersaglieri” headed
by general Negri. Among the most important works
of the national regime, the following are worth a
mention: the monumental Government House, the
impressive Guidoni barracks, the beautiful Park,
the green heart of Benevento, designed by Alfredo
Denhart, former director of the Naples Botanical Gadens.
THE SANNIO
The “Forche Caudine” pass is located in the province, on the S.S. 7 near ARPAIA. According to the
scholars it is the spot where in 321 BC the Romans
suffered a humiliating defeat and submission to the
Samnites.
Further on, en route to Benevento., you will
come across MONTESARCHIO (the ancient Caudium) with a castle that, in Bourbon times, housed
a political prison where Poerio, Pironti, Nisco and
other patriots were detained. The National Archaeological Museum of Caudium Samnium is located
in the Medieval Castle and preserves important
Samnite, Roman, Corinthian and Greek items.
From Montesarchio, following the road linking Caudina Valley to the Calore Valley, you will reach the
state forest of “Taburno” located at 1.100 metres
above sea level and, going on, the towns of the Telesina Valley. While making a detour to VITULANO,
you might either climb up 1.400 metres above sea
level (Camposauro) or go to Foghanise, a village
known for its Corn Festival in honour of St. Rocco
(on August 16th).
Near Montesarchio, you will find BONEA, where
Cocceio villa, mentioned by Horace, was located;
then, there is AIROLA, where you should pay a visit to the Annunciation Church boasting a fine neoclassical facade by architect Domenico Brunelli and
further away S. AGATA DE’ GOTI, a beautiful town
situated on a tufaceous rock, known for its semi-circular urban design and remarkable for its churches:
the Cathedral (dated 10th century, rebuilt in the XXII
century) preserves parts of the ancient mosaic floor
and, in the crypt, interesting frescoes from the XIX
century; St. Menna’s Church (XXII century) features
the layout of the early Christian temples and houses
a precious mosaic floor; the Annunciation Church
with its fine XVI century portal and the painting of
the Annunciation, a noteworthy Catalan work from
the XV century.

beneventano. Preparato dalle ammalianti e leggendarie ‘streghe locali’, l’eccellente liquore ha
un gusto forte e intenso. Altrettanto interessanti
i numerosi formaggi e insaccati. Infine gli ottimi
dolci, in particolare i torroni, e i pregiati vini locali (Aglianico, Falanghina).

different kind of cheese and salami. There are also

nougat), and fine local wines (Aglianico, Falanghina).
