SEGRETI E SORELLE
sinossi
giorno dopo giorno aveva registrato pensieri e impressioni.
grido d’aiuto.
SECRETS AND SISTERS
synopsis
Emilia and Paola return to the house they grew up in, where no one has set foot
since the death of their mother. Paola left home very early and didn’t even attend
the funeral. Emilia assisted her mother till the end and left three days later.
Once home, the two sisters clash immediately over old problems, and the tension
that divided them in the youth rises again to the surface. Even when living in the
same house, they follow different paths.
Emilia slowly shuts herself off from the world, hardly ever leaving the house, and
hiding in the attic where their mother herself used to hide when she wanted to be
left alone. In fact, it is a secret world that Emilia discovers when she begins
listening to the tapes on which her mother recorded her thoughts and feelings.
Restless, bold and looking for fun, Paola tries to rejoin to her old life and friends,
but she discovers that those years now lie in the distant past.
As the days pass, their disagreements intensify, especially because Emilia, who
had the idea to sell the house, now seems to have changed her mind. Paola is
vexed and no longer understands her sister. She doesn’t know that Emilia is
increasingly identifying with their mother. Alone in the attic, she starts sewing again,
something she’d always dreamt of doing, thus finding peace in her creative
solitude.
Angry and disappointed, Paola finally decides to leave town, but she discovers
Emilia’s hideaway just before her departure. Emilia finally breaks down and
confesses the great fear to Paola, who only then understands that the sale of the
house was only a silent cry for help.
SEGRETI E SORELLE
note del regista
C’è il tema del ritorno perché Emilia e Paola tornano nel luogo da cui erano partite;
SECRETS AND SISTERS
director’s note
on the film’s themes
Secrets and Sisters interested me immediately because of the themes the story
explores, all universal, all echoing in each of us.
Apparent is the theme of returning, since both Emilia and Paola come back to the
town in which they grew up. Then, there is the close relationship between the two
sisters that clearly addresses the tensions but also depicts the lightheartedness
that hint at a sort of subdued creativity. When emptying their mother’s house,
Emilia and Paola cannot avoid recalling their dead mother, a picture of whom we
never see. Through the mother, of course, there is the theme of fear and death.
Another theme included in the film is the difficulty in communicating our deeper
feelings. In fact, only at the end does Paola understand that the sale of the house
was only an excuse, and that Emilia is simply asking her to be next to her;
however, she cannot say that she is terribly scared.
on the film’s locations
The film is shot in Chiasso, but in such a way that Chiasso could be somewhere
else, since the story of the two sisters clearly could happen anywhere.
I wanted the mother’s house to be next the railroad tracks, such that it would
represent a home in an area in constant motion, with trains running one after the
other, arriving and departing, of changes, and cutting through.
Even today, in order for the two sisters to reach the other part of town, they simply
walk through the railroad tracks as they did when they were children.
In contrast, instead of being in motion, the house is full of memories. It is a house
that contains the family’s history; its story.
on the actresses
Emilia is played by Anita Kravos, an Italian actress who studied acting at the
famous GITIS in Moscow.
Karolina Dafne Porcari, an Italian living in Poland where she studied acting in
Crakovia, plays Paola.
I had these actresses in mind from the beginning because both have that East
European way of approaching a role, and acting it very naturally. I prefer that
quality in actors.
