Dear Parents and Guardians,
Over the past few weeks we have seen an increase in situations that are putting our students at risk
of being seriously injured. We need your help to prevent a tragedy from occurring.
Please follow these simple, but very important rules when picking up or dropping off your child in our
designated areas. We have worked very closely with the Mesa School District Security Office, Mesa
Police Department and the City’s Public Safety Office in designing the pick up and drop off area and in
developing these procedures. We ask all parents and others who are picking up or dropping off a
student to follow these simple rules for the safety of everyone on our campus. Please read the
attached procedures carefully. We have had several very close calls where children and adults have
almost been hit by drivers not following these extremely important procedures.
When teachers have tried to remind drivers of these procedures, they have been met with many angry,
argumentative and belligerent responses. The teachers on duty are there to do their best in keeping
your children safe. It is very unfair and uncalled for to treat these concerned adults with such
disrespect and hostility. We will do our best to enforce these procedures. If you decide to not follow
these procedures, I will contact you and ask you to not pick up or drop off your child. Your child will
need to walk or ride the bus to and from school. I am hopeful that you will see the importance of these
procedures and decide to follow them to ensure the safety of everyone.

VERY IMPORTANT
PORTER’S STUDENT AUTO PICK-UP and DROP OFF AREAS AND PROCEEDURES
We have configured our student pickup and drop off areas on campus for several specific and important reasons. The first and most important
reason is student safety. Following this procedure as written ensures our student’s safety when being dropped off or picked up from school. The
second reason is this plan dramatically improves the flow of traffic on campus during these extremely busy times of the day. Considerable thought,
consultation and input over the past years have gone into the planning and development of this plan.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY!!!!!
Parents Picking Up / Dropping Off Students
PARENTS, PLEASE PICK UP AND DROP OFF STUDENTS IN OUR NORTH PARKING LOT ONLY. This lot is located along Lindsay Rd. toward the front of
the building. Vehicles must enter campus off Lindsay through the farthest north driveway (entryway closest to the Casitas). Vehicles will exit
through the driveway closest to the building (south driveway).
You will then pull up along the sidewalk area to the farthest spot to pick up or drop off your child. There will be one lane to do this. Children will
not be allowed to get into or out off a vehicle unless that vehicle is along the safety pull up curb. You may also park in the north lot and walk your
child to the sidewalk if you prefer. Please do not let or encourage your child to walk through the parking lot unescorted by an adult. Students will
not be allowed to enter the parking lot without their parents escorting them.
The parking area in front of our building is reserved for special education busses, day care vans and staff parking only. NO PRIVATE VEHICLES WILL
BE ALLOWED IN THE FRONT OF OUR SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON. We appreciate you following these simple safety procedures.
There is no drop off and pick up along Hampton. No supervisor is stationed and it is extremely dangerous to do so!
If your child rides a bus – he or she will be picked up and dropped off in the bus loading zone along Hampton Ave. Busses enter at the
east driveway and exit at the west driveway. No cars are allowed in this area or along Hampton to pick up or drop off students.
These procedures will make the drop off pick up safer, quicker and much easier if we all follow the rules listed above. STUDENT SAFETY IS OUR
FIRST PRIORITY. FOLLOWING THESE PROCEEDURES WILL HELP ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS, PARENTS AND STAFF. PLEASE BE PATIENT.
IF YOU ARE IN A HURY IT IS BETTER NOT TO PICK UP OR DROP OFF YOUR CHILD AND FIND ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS. PLEASE BE PATIENT.

En las últimas semanas hemos observado un incremento en las situaciones que ponen en riesgo a los estudiantes con la

POR FAVOR RETIREN Y DEJEN A SUS HIJOS EN EL ESTACIONAMIENTO NORTE SOLAMENTE. El estacionamiento está ubicado en Lindsay Rd., hacia el
frente del edificio. Los vehículos deben ingresar al recinto escolar por Lindsay a través del acceso vehicular que está en el extremo norte (la entrada
más cercana a Casitas). Los vehículos saldrán a través del acceso vehicular más cercano al edificio (acceso vehicular al sur).
Luego se acercará a la acera hacia el lugar más lejano para retirar y dejar a su hijo. Habrá un carril para esto. Los niños no podrán subir o
descender del vehículo excepto que el vehículo esté en el cordón de acceso de seguridad. Si prefiere, también puede estacionarse en el
estacionamiento norte y acompañar a su hijo caminando hasta la vereda . No permita que su hijo camine por el estacionamiento sin la compañía
de un adulto. A los estudiantes no se les permitirá ingresar al estacionamiento si no están acompañados por sus padres

No se permite retirar y dejar a los estudiantes en Hampton. ¡No hay ningún supervisor en esa zona y es muy peligroso!
Si su hijo viaja en autobús: Será retirado y dejado en Hampton St. Los autobuses se acercarán (antigua área en donde los padres
retiraban/dejaban a los niños) a la nueva área desde el este y se retirarán hacia el oeste por Hampton St. No se permite el ingreso de los vehículos
en esta área o en Hampton para retirar o dejar a los estudiantes.
Si todos cumplimos con los procedimientos será más seguro, rápido y fácil retirar y dejar a los estudiantes. NUESTRA PRIORIDAD ES LA SEGURIDAD
DE LOS ESTUDIANTES. SI CUMPLIMOS CON ESTOS PROCEDIMIENTOS AYUDAREMOS A GARANTIZAR LA SEGURIDAD DE LOS ESTUDIANTES, LOS
PADRES Y DEL PERSONAL. POR FAVOR SEAN PACIENTES. SI USTED TIENE PRISA, SERÁ MEJOR QUE NO RETIRE O BUSQUE A SU HIJO Y QUE

Super study skills
A child who knows when, what, and how to study is more
likely to be ready for a quiz or test—and will learn more.
Help your youngster get prepared with these tips.
When
Your child will learn the most toward the beginning of
study time, when her mind is fresh. Have her plan several
short study sessions as soon as her teacher announces a
test. Working at a comfortable pace will help her
remember more and stay motivated.
Tip: Suggest that older children split study sessions in
half, taking a break to eat a snack or ride a bike.
What
Students can make the most of study time by knowing
what will be on a test. If your youngster isn’t sure what
will be covered, she should ask her teacher. Before she
studies, you might give her a “pre-test” so she can see
what she needs to focus on. For example, if she correctly
defines 6 of her 20 vocabulary words, she can spend her
time on the other 14.
My office
How
Explain to your child that studying is more than just
reading—she should “actively” study. That way, she’ll
really learn the material rather than simply memorizing it
for a test. As she goes over class notes or handouts, she
can highlight important points. While reviewing her
textbook, she might draw pictures or diagrams. Or she
could record herself asking questions and then play them
back, pausing the recorder to give the answers. Finally,
quiz her on the material after she has studied.♥

Library Resource Center Update
The Monster Mania Book Fair was a big success! Thanks
to all of you that came to support the Porter Library. We
were able to get a lot of good books to add to our
shelves, and some cash to help purchase some new titles
later this year. Thank you to all the parents that
volunteered, you were such a big help!
November will be a busy month. We have an author,
Kenn Nesbitt coming to visit with our K, 1st and 2nd
grades on the 10th. He is a funny and fascinating poet.
Check out his website at www.poetry4kids.com. He just
published his first picture book “More Bears” and we will
be selling the book here at Porter, so you may have it
autographed. Look for flyers coming home soon.
The first Battle of the Books will be held in the Library on
the 19th at 2:00. Parents please come and support your
students. They have worked very hard. Please check to
see that they have finished all four books and are ready
to battle.

¡La feria de libros “Monster Mania” fue un gran éxito!
Agradecemos a todos los que estuvieron presentes
apoyando a la Biblioteca de Porter. Obtuvimos muchos

de efectivo para comprar algunos títulos nuevos más

Sometimes students have accidents here at Porter,
and the Health Office does its best to provide clean
and dry clothing for your child. At this time, the
Health Office is very low on clothing to provide for the
students if their clothing gets wet/damaged. We are
in need of children’s clothing of varying sizes from
small-large appropriate for boys and girls at school.
We especially need pants and shorts in size medium.
Any clothing donations to the Health Office would be
greatly appreciated.
If your child seems to be having bathroom accidents
please keep an extra change of clothing in their
backpack. Please review the parent handbook on
dress code policies at Porter.
Due to our clothing shortage, we will be calling
parents to provide clothing for student’s who violate
the dress code.

A veces, los estudiantes tienen accidentes en Porter, y la
Oficina de Salud hace todo lo posible por proporcionar
ropa limpia y seca para los niños. En este momento, la
