College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Volume 14, Issue 5 March 2013 Student Activities The Ethnic Studies Student Organization hosted an "IceSkating Day” at the All-Season Arena and a “Bowling Night” at the Jerry Dutler’s Bowl, January – February 2013. GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES Abigail Barefoot, graduate student, was the lead director and actress for The Vagina Monologues, February 13-14, 2013. Samantha Coffin, graduate student, helped organize the Safer Sex Carnival. There were several tables and games to educate the campus community about safer sex, CSU, February 13, 2013. Dieynaba Niabaly and Chelsea Barr tabled at the Diversity Fair as representatives of the GWS Club. They passed out samples of Fair Trade Chocolate and a leaflet about further action people can take about labor rights violations incurred in harvesting cocoa. They also showed the film, The Dark Side of Chocolate, and held a discussion about the use of child labor in the cocoa trade, February 2013. GOVERNMENT Colleen Clarke and Andrew Stevens presented, “Bioaccumulated Toxins and the Adverse Impacts They Have on Juveniles,” at the international and interdisciplinary Terri Hanson was awarded the 2013 Young Mustang Conference in Las Vegas, February 22, 2013. PSYCHOLOGY Woman of Distinction award from the YWCA Chelsea Schmillen and Colette Baudoin’s project, “Intuition Overrules Logic When Detecting Deception,” was accepted ECONOMICS Curtis Gruidl received a URC stipend grant for presentation at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) , La Crosse, WI, February for his research proposal examining political affiliation of state legislatures and 2013. ANTHROPOLOGY Terri Hanson, current cultural Anthropology student, has been awarded the 2013 Young Woman of Distinction award from the YWCA in Mankato for her work with immigrant communities, February 2013. 1 College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Good News Faculty and Department Activities Representatives in the February 12, 2013 special election for State House District 19A, including St. Peter, North Mankato and some areas of Mankato, February 2013. ECONOMICS Ihsuan Li is serving as reviewer for the Proceedings of the National Conference of Undergraduate Research, 2013. Ihsuan Li was named Presidential Teaching Scholar Fellow, 2013. HISTORY Marlene Medrano presented, “Prostitution, War, and Diplomacy: Ciudad Juarez, 194-1945,” as part of the History Department Spring 2013 Lecture Series, February 7, 2013. The Department of Economics held its third Special Advising Session for majors and minors in economics. Invited alumni speakers were Eric Anderson, Mayor of Mankato, and Michael Murzyn, Senior Director of Analytics at Cotterweb Enterprises, February 20, 2013. GEOGRAPHY Martin Mitchell’s paper, “Using Mental Map Principles to Interpret American Indian Cartography,” will be published in the Journal of Geography, 2013. GOVERNMENT James Bailey, Professor Emeritus of the Law Enforcement Department, reviewed DNA crime scene collection procedures for a new line of Copan products. He and MSU were cited in the Copan literature for reviewing their procedures, February 2013. SOCIAL STUDIES Clark Johnson was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in the February 12, 2013 special election for State House District 19A. He was sworn in on February 19, 2013. James Robertson ‘s article, “Same-sex ‘Makin’ Out’: Prison Visitation and Gender/Sexual Orientation Discrimination,” will be published in Correctional Law Reporter, April-May 2013. Fred Slocum was interviewed on the Dr. Howard Gluss radio show on talk/news radio station KFNX from Phoenix, Arizona on the psychology of presidential debates. Fred Slocum is organizing the Midwest Political Science Undergraduate Research Conference, to be held at Minnesota State University, Mankato, March 22-23, 2013. Fred Slocum is serving on the IFO’s Government Relations Committee, serving as a liaison between MnSCU faculty and the Minnesota Legislature. He and other GRC members participated in Lobby Day at the state capitol, Feb. 13 and 14. Slocum’s seat on the GRC was previously held by Clark Johnson (Social Studies), who is newly elected to the Minnesota House of Clark Johnson was sworn in on February 19, 2013 2 College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Good News editor, journal production editor, journal consulting editor, and journal associate editor. He also has been on an editorial Board for an international journal from 2009 to the present. He has made 8 national/international scholarly presentations, 11 regional scholarly presentations, and 5 local ones. Dr. Waskul stimulates students to be Sociologists and to be Scholars. Three of his publications since being at MSU are co-authored with 3 different students. He has supervised 7 graduate theses committees since coming here. One student’s thesis won an international award given in the name of an eminent Symbolic Interactionist, the theoretical specialization of Dr. Waskul. This is a clear indication that Dr. Waskul is successfully training the next generation of scientists in his field, February 2013. SOCIAL WORK David Beimers, Brian Warner, and Paul Mackie’s paper, “Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Undergraduate Social Work Programs: How are Rural Programs Faring?” will be published in Contemporary Rural Social Work, June 2013. Kofi Danso and Lum’s article, “Intergroup relations and predictors of immigrant experience,” was published in the Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Social Work, 2013. Kofi Danso and Seok Won Jin presented, “Using Intergroup Relations Theory to Explain Predictors of Immigrant Experience,” at the Annual Conference of the Society for Social Work and Research, San Diego, CA, January 16-20, 2013. Sociology is celebrating 100 years at MSU! G.S. Petterson, the first MSU sociologist, started teaching at the Mankato Normal School in 1913, February 2013. Kofi Danso presented, “Neighborhood Effect and Health Disparities among Immigrants and Non-Immigrants,” at the American Public Health Association, San Francisco, CA, October 27-31, 2012. Kofi Danso and Lum presented, “Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health and Mental Trajectories of Older People,” at the American Public Health Association, San Francisco, CA, October 27-31, 2012. SOCIOLOGY Dennis Waskul has been identified for our University’s 2013 Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award. Dr. Waskul is an extremely successful researcher. He has authored 2 books and been editor of 4 additional ones. He has published 19 scholarly articles in peer-refereed journals. He has published 14 book chapters. He has edited a book series that has published 4 books, and been a journal guest G. S.
