College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Volume 14, Issue 1 September/October 2012 Student Activities ANTHROPOLOGY Heidi Bauer-Clapp, MSU alumna, coauthored an article, “Violence and Conflict: Teaching Violence,” in Anthropology News, September 2012. Terri Hanson was awarded the, “Walking in Two Worlds Volunteer of the Year Award,” at the YWCA Annual Meeting for her work with immigrant populations in Mankato, August 28, 2012. ECONOMICS Justin Bedore, recent graduate, has been awarded the Omicron Delta Epsilon Gold Key Award (Outstanding Student Award). Each year, three such students are recognized internationally, September 2012. Dana Simonson’s paper (advisor Dr. Ihsuan Li) was selected as a finalist in the Best Undergraduate Paper Competition sponsored by the International Atlantic Economic Society, August 2012. ETHNIC STUDIES Linda Yang, GaoShoua Vang, Lindsay Bolstad, and Va Yang received the Ethnic Studies Student Organization’s Executive Officers Award for 2011-2012. Vang Xiong and the Ethnic Studies Student Organization attended an “Open-Session: Community Forum on Overcome Racism,” at Metropolitan State University, Saint Paul, September 2012. Ethnic Studies Student Organization at Open-Season SOCIAL WORK Three graduates of the 2012 class of the Master of Social Work program won a national award for their advocacy efforts to expand the TXT4LIFE texting hotline for teens struggling with mental health issues to all of Minnesota, September 7, 2012. URBAN AND REGIONAL STUDIES Anthony Filipovitch and student Alexander Cahill completed a report, “The Impact of State and Local Government Regulation on Business Competitiveness in Minnesota,” for the Center for Rural Policy and Development, August 2012. Faculty and Department Activities ECONOMICS Atrayee Ghosh Ray published, “Revisiting the Relationship between Economic Growth and Government Size,” in Economics Research International, 2012. Welcome Economics Staff Member: Amanda Greenig resides in St. Peter with her husband, Nick Greenig. She has two sons, Joseph(3) and Dylan(1). She graduated from University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a major in Conservation. After college she worked in the restaurant business for 8 years in Faribault. She married Nick and purchased a home in the country. After moving to St. Peter she started working for a private business in the St. Peter/Mankato area and continued to work there for 5 years. ETHNIC STUDIES Vang Xiong attended the “Hmong Spring Dance Festival,” at Southwest Minnesota State University, May 2012. 1 College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Good News international development grant. Rama earned his PhD in 2012 from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. He focused on urban and transportation geography (Transportation logistics) using GIS methodologies. In 2010, Rama came to MSU-Geography as a Pre-Doctoral Fellow. He successfully taught several GIS courses and completed his dissertation earlier in 2012. He was subsequently offered a probationary position in May of 2012. Vang Xiong attended the Como Park Senior High School’s Parents & Teacher Conference, April 2012. Vang Xiong presented, “Who Are the Hmong?” at the Bremer Hmong Culture Days in Marshall & Willmar, May 2012. Woo Jang is native to South Korea. He came to the USA in 1998 to study computer science at Minnesota State University-Mankato. He graduated with a BS in Computer Science; however after taking a cultural geography course at MSU he became interested in geography. For his master's degree, Woo transferred into the Geography dept. at MSU where he focused on GIS and Transportation infrastructure. He received the George Muller Scholarship in 2005. In 2012 he completed his PhD at the University of Georgia where he again focused on GIS, Transportation infrastructure and population geography. He was offered a probationary position in May 2012. Vang Xiong presented Who Are the Hmong? GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES Welcome Gender and Women’s Studies Faculty Member: GOVERNMENT Jeffrey Bumgarner was quoted in an Associated Press article on the use of social media by the police, June 2012. Laura Harrison received her BA from University of Iowa in 2005, where she majored in Women’s Studies and Psychology. She received her PhD in Gender Studies from Indiana University in 2012. She has a co-authored a forthcoming article in Feminist Media Studies entitled “Not Ready to Make Nice: Aberrant Mothers in Contemporary Culture” and has co-authored the essay “Babies by the Bundle: Gender, Backlash, and the Quiverfull Movement,” which was published in Feminist Formations in 2011. She also has an essay in the 2010 anthology Mothering in the Twenty-First Century: Identity, Policy, Experience and Agency. Dr. Harrison made connections between her research and community involvement by volunteering as a medical counselor for Planned Parenthood of Indiana, and she was a research assistant for the Associate Director of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction in Bloomington, Indiana. Tom Inglot traveled to Europe this summer to conduct research and interviews for his project entitled European Integration, Welfare State, and the Family since 2004. The project was supported by the 2012 Faculty Research Grant and involved work at the European Parliament and the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium and also field research in Hungary and Poland. Tom Inglot presented a paper, “Developmental Paths of Family Policies in the Former Socialist Countries,” at the International Symposium: Welfare State Reform and Consequences, organized by the Center for Globalization and Governance, at the University of Hamburg, Germany, June 12-13, 2012. Tom Inglot and co-authors Dr. Dorrotya Szikra (Hungary) and Dr. Cristina Rat (Romania) presented a paper, “History, Politics, and Ideas: Family Policy in Postwar Poland, Hungary, and Romania,” at an international conference organized by the Nordic Center of Excellence and the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark, June 15, 2012. GEOGRAPHY Cindy Miller worked with the Greater Mankato Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in order to produce a map of the veterans’ memorials in Mankato and North Mankato. The project was featured on the front page of the Free Press on July 10, 2012 and the maps are currently being distributed. Tom Inglot presented, “Historical Legacies and Contemporary Politics of Family Policy in New EU Member States: A Comparison of Poland, Hungary and Romania,” at the Dept. of Sociology, Institute for Social Policy, GeorgAugust University Göttingen, Germany, June 26, 2012. Welcome Geography Faculty Members: Rama Mohapatra is native to India, he earned his bachelors and masters degrees at Utkal University in India. His focus was on natural hazards and flooding. He worked for the Indian Institute of Technology where he used GIS based approaches for studying land and natural resource use. The Canadian government funded much of his work through an Joe Kunkel was interviewed by KEYC-TV about parties’ strategies in the presidential election, September 5, 2012. 2 College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Good News Joe Kunkel was interviewed by the MSU Reporter about the election and the powers of the president, September 4, 2012. HISTORY Joe Kunkel was interviewed by the Minnesota Daily about the political climate and the election outlook in the First Congressional District, September 11, 2012. Welcome Government Faculty Members: Ken Zimny’s PhD is from the University of Illinois in Curriculum and Instruction. He has researched how a police academy teaches cultural diversity. He would like to continue researching how police officers are taught cultural diversity. He would also like to research how well officers who receive scenario training are prepared for the job of a police officer. He worked as Champaign, IL police officer for 11 years. He then worked at two police academies as an instructor. While at these academies he worked full-time and finished his Master's and PhD. Pat Nelson is working on her dissertation through Walden University in the areas of Homeland Security Policy and Coordination and Terrorism, Mediation, and Peace. Her research focuses on identifying points of contact to share community intelligence between local law enforcement and targeted communities. She received her Masters in Non-Profit Administration and her Bachelors in Law Enforcement from Metro State University.. Her professional experience was with the Minneapolis Police Department, where she worked patrol in North Minneapolis for fourteen years before being promoted to sergeant. She has been a SWAT Negotiator for 9 years and has led training for the Negotiation Team and the entire SWAT team for the last five years. Reggie Edwards is currently working on a Ph.D. In Sociology with a concentration in Organizational Development at South Dakota State University. He has a BA and MPA from University of Central Florida. In 2007, he was an Adjunct Professor at MSU, Urban and Regional Studies Institute (URSI). From 2001-2011, he was an Executive Director of Region Nine Development Commission. From 1999-2001, he was a City Administrator of Chisago City. From 1994-1999, he was a Senior Policy Analyst for the Ramsey County. He has also been a Hubert H. Humphrey Policy Fellow (1998) at the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota. Chris Dobratz is pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration with an emphasis in Criminal Justice at Northcentral University, Prescott Valley, Arizona. He received a Master of Arts in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Public Administration from Minnesota State University, Mankato. From Fall 2008 to the present, he has been an assistant professor (fixed term) at Minnesota State Mankato. He was also a police sergeant at the Hutchinson Police Services in Hutchinson, Minnesota from January 2000 to July 2008. 3 Welcome History Faculty and Staff Members: Gina Martion-Trutor will be teaching courses in early modern European history, in addition to survey courses in European and American history. A St. Olaf College graduate, Gina did a master’s degree at Minnesota State University, Mankato, working with Prof. Chris Corley. Gina earned her PhD in history from the University of Minnesota in 2012. Her course work focused on the Atlantic World, and in her dissertation she looked at how women (native and settler) actively participated in the many wars in New England and New France. Gina taught as an adjunct in the department prior to earning her PhD. Cretia Welborn joined History as the administrative assistant in July. She previously worked in the Registrar’s Office. Cretia, her husband Brian, and her daughters Kiersten, Mikayla, and Madison live between Mapleton and Pemberton. Brian is a mechanic at Mn DOT and Cretia’s daughters attend school in St. Clair. Cretia graduated from Model College of Hair Design and previously co-owned Cutting With Class (which was in the basement of the CSU) and managed a hair salon in Peoria, AZ. She has also worked in the health care field as a CNA, receptionist, staffing coordinator and HR coordinator. PSYCHOLOGY Kevin Filter began his two year term as the president of the Minnesota School Psychologists Association, Summer 2012 Welcome Psychology Faculty Member: Moses Langley comes to the psychology department from the University of Wisconsin - Parkside, where he was an assistant professor. Dr. Langley earned his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Iowa. His research examines the underlying neural correlates of attention and task switching. Dr. Langley brings to MSU, Mankato a strong record of student-centered commitment to diversity. In the psychology department he will be teaching in both cognitive and biological psychology areas. SOCIAL STUDIES Clark Johnson presented, “Tuning Protocol,” a workshop on reflection of teaching practices for teachers, Springfield High School, May 2, 2012. SOCIAL WORK Michelle Alvarez was awarded MN Social Worker of the Year by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers at their annual conference, University of Minnesota, Saint Paul Campus, June 7-8, 2012. The Department of Social Work signed a one-year MSW Title IV-E contract with the Department of Human Services for $125,680 to support nine MSW students and reimburse College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Good News costs related to educating public child welfare social workers, August 2012. The Department of Social Work launched a brand new and improved Department of Social Work landing page on the MSU Mankato Website, September 2012. Leah Rogne was interviewed by the Fargo Forum on “Feminism and North Dakota: The Fight for Equal Rights Amendment,” September 2012. URBAN AND REGIONAL STUDIES Anthony Filipovitch’s proposal, “Hear Every Voice: Community Engagement in Transportation Planning,” was funded by the Minnesota Department of Transportation in the amount of $193,183, June 2012. SOCIOLOGY AND CORRECTIONS Afroza Anwary published, “State Sponsored Collective Rape of Women and Gendered Nature of Legal Institution,” in the Pakistan Journal of Women’s Studies, July 2012. Anthony Filipovitch published an opinion piece, “Reusing the Commercial Center,” in MN Valley Business, August 20, 2012. Steve Buechler was an invited panelist on, “The Future of Social Movement Theory,” at the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting, Denver, CO, August 2012. Steve Buechler presents the keynote speech, “Social Movements Theory: Prospects for Democratization,” at the Sociologists of Minnesota Annual Meetings. Four students from his Social Movements class will also present at SOM, September 2012. Barbara Carson presented, “Network Analysis of Sentencing Commission Members,” at the American Sociological Association Meetings, Denver, CO, August 2012. James Robertson published, “Exchanging Sex for Protection: Do the PREA Standards Legitimate ‘Shielding’ Arrangements Between Inmates?” in the Correctional Law Reporter, October-November 2012. Miriam Porter spent four weeks researching disaster preparedness in Ghana. During that time, Miriam and one of her research partners were asked to present their research at the STEM-Africa conference which was hosted by the University of Michigan in collaboration with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi Ghana, Summer 2012. Welcome Urban and Regional Studies Faculty Member: Robert Hugg brings over 35 years’ leadership, management, administration, research, and teaching experience to the college. Bob has a distinguished history in many industries including the military, IT, and Higher Education. Of particular note is Bob’s work in Change Management, Organizational Development, leadership training, communications-culture building and organizational improvement, Curriculum Design, and Service Learning. Bob has worked with MSU for 8 years; his most recent role has been as the Educational Research Systems Liaison for the College of Education, where he advised key decision makers and managed College data systems capabilities/capacity to facilitate education studies. Bob’s credentials include the M.S. in Experiential Education and The Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership.
