Ashley Cauley (alumni), city planner for Minnetonka,
returned to campus on Feb. 16, 2015 to present, "Tips on
Successfully Securing an Internship," to students in a work
session conducted with Miriam Porter.
Hannah Rybak was featured in the Fairmont Sentinel, for her
work with Project 1590. She is assisting the company in
organizing and collecting ideas from the Fairmont community
on how to improve their city.

College of Social and Behavioral Sciences students in
“Who’s Who?” This national program honors outstanding
students for their scholastic and community achievements.
Each department nominates students whose academic
standing, participation in extracurricular activities and
community service are superior in nature. All nominated

Analysis of the Baby Boomers’ Jobs and Housing
Patterns in a GIS Framework,” published in Review of
Business Research. 2014.
Woo Jang and colleague had their article, “Tracking
Ethnically Divided Commuting Patterns Over Time –
Method and a Case Study of Metropolitan Atlanta,”
published in The Professional Geographer.2014.
Phillip Larson, Donald Friend and colleagues had their
article, “Toe-Cut Terraces: A Review and Proposed
Criteria to Differentiate them from Traditional Fluvial
Terraces,” accepted for publication in Progress in
Physical Geography.
Phillip Miller was interviewed by the Daily Titan, the Cal

college baseball coaches’ salaries.

Shawna Petersen-Brown had her paper, “Meta-Analysis
of Academic Interventions Derived from
Neuropsychological Data,” accepted for publication in
School Psychology Review.
Fred Slocum attended and brought ten students to the
Minnesota Political Science Association conference,
November 8, 2014, at Normandale Community College,
Bloomington, MN. Slocum serves as treasurer for the
Minnesota Political Science Association (MNPSA), a role
that puts him next in line to be president of MNPSA for
2015-2017.
Fred Slocum organized the Political Science panel,
arranging for three panelists to present, at the College of
Social and Behavioral Sciences Career and Internship
Day, February 17, 2015.

URBAN AND REGIONAL STUDIES
Miriam Porter has been asked to present at the New
Directions in the Humanities conference at the University
of British Columbia in Vancouver. She will be presenting
collaborative research in which she, Asomani-Boateng,
and Dr. Kessey from Kwame Nkrumah University in
Kumasi Ghana have been engaged in. Her presentation is
titled “Disaster Preparedness in a Developing Economy:
Ghana, a Case Study”.
Emily Boyd's article on the intersections of music,
popular culture and social interaction is being published
in Popular Culture and Everyday Life, edited by Dennis
Waskul and Phillip Vannini.
James E. Robertson’s article, “Recent Legal
Developments: Correctional Case Law, 2014,” will
appear in Criminal Justice Review.
James E. Robertson’s book chapter, “Gender and Sex in
Jails and Prisons,” (tentative title), will appear in, “Sex,
Sexuality, and Justice” (tentative title).
Urban and Regional Studies Institute hosted the
MACPZA District Workshop. Over 100 people were in
attendance. Participants included zoning administrators,
code enforcement officers, elected and appointed board
members, city planners from southern Minnesota as well
as URSI faculty and students. Emeritus Professor, Perry
Wood was instrumental in bringing this workshop to
campus, February 13, 2015.
Urban and Regional Studies Institute hosted a luncheon
for students and panelists presenting at Career Day. This
facilitated continued dialogue between students and those
practicing in the field of local government after the URSI
Career Panel presentation. The panelists, all URSI
alumni, were Frank Boyles, City Manager of Prior Lake,
Julie Wischnack, Community Development Director of
Minnetonka and Lindy Crawford, Fellow for the City of
