The Online Retail Locator
In 2016, the DNR created and launched “Michigan’s Retail Bait Shop Locator” on the Fisheries Division website. The locator allows
people to search for and obtain the address and contact information for licensed retail bait dealers around Michigan.
Information on licensed Retail Minnow, Wiggler, and Crayfish Dealers has always been provided on the DNR website, but this was the
first time it has been provided in map form. We are aware there are a small number of persons who obtain a retail minnow dealers
license each year that do not actually run a retail shop. We wanted to give those persons without a physical retail location an
opportunity to opt out of the online locator. You can do so by checking the box titled “Do not include me in the Online Retail Locator”
located immediately below the “Retail Minnow, Wiggler, & Crayfish Dealer” option on your application.
Anyone who does not opt out on their application by checking the box will automatically be included in the DNR’s online site.
Figure 1. This is a screen shot from the locator. Every licensed retail minnow dealer appears as a dot on the map and users can zoom
in and scroll over each dot to get the name, address, and contact information as a potential location to buy bait from. Users are advised
to call ahead to make sure the location they are interested in is open and has bait available for purchase. The locator can be found
