Essential
Questions
Measurement
and Scientific Tools
• In science what units are
internationally accepted?
• Why should you use significant
digits?
• How do I use the metric system?

The
International
of Units
 The International System of Units (SI) is an
internationally accepted system for measurement.
 The International System of Units is the
modern form of the metric system, and is the
most widely used system of measurement.
Reasons why scientists use the International System
of Units (SI).?
 So all scientists regardless of what country they're
in can do the experiment and know how much of a
specific substance to use.
 So calculations done in one country could be
understood by a scientist living in another country.

The
International
of Units
 All SI units are derived from seven base units.
The International System of Units (cont.)
 A prefix can be added
to a base unit’s name to
indicate either a
fraction or a multiple of
that base unit.
 Prefixes are based on
powers of ten, such as
0.01 and 100.

Accuracy
 All measurements have some uncertainty.
 The tools used to make measurements limit
the accuracy of the measurements.

Significant
 Significant digits are the number of digits in a
measurement that are known with a certain degree of
reliability.
 The significant digits in a measurement include all digits
you know for certain plus one estimated digit.

Metric
System
The metric system is a measurement system based
on our decimal (base 10) number system.

Metric
Units Tools
To change from one unit to another in the metric system
you simply multiply or divide by a power of 10.
