A. Core Indicators
1. Percentage of courses where major syllabus restructuring was carried out
during last 3 years.
All undergraduate and postgraduate programs went through a major
restructuring of syllabus and course scheme during the last three years.
2. Temporal Plan in more than 50% programmes (CBCS/Semester/Annual)
Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology University uses the Choice
Based Credit System (CBCS) programme in which the students study the
prescribed courses, which are referred as core and professional and have a
choice to chose an elective or minor or soft skill courses and the entire
assessment is graded-based on a credit system. There are three main course
types: Core, Professional and Elective. All the three main courses types are
evaluated and accessed to provide for an effective and balanced result.
The assessment is done semester wise. A student progresses on the basis of
the courses taken. Each semester has 18 weeks of academic work which is
equal to 90 teaching days. There is flexibility in creating the curriculum and
assigning credits based on the course content and hours of teaching. Each
course is assigned a certain credit which is based on 1 credit for every lecture
per week and ½ credit for tutorial or laboratory hour per week. When the
student passes that course, he/she earns the credits which are based on that
course. If a student passes a single course in a semester, he/she does not have
to repeat that course later. If for some unforeseen reasons, he/she cannot cope
with the study load or falls sick, the student has the freedom to study fewer
courses and earn fewer credits and can compensate this in the next semester.
There is a continuous evaluation of the student.
Thapar uses a 10-point grading system for the past 21 years. One credit per
semester is equal to one hour of lecturing (L) or two hours of practical
work/field work or tutorial (P or T) per week. A study course can have only L
component or only T or P component or combination of any two or all the
three components. The total credits earned by a student for each semester is
L+T+P.
3. Percentage of teachers with Ph.D. qualification General Courses. Profession
courses (for. MD/DM for Medicine and ME.MS for Engineering)
2
As on date 215 members of academic staff have PhD out of a total strength of
309, which is approx 70%.
4. Student computer ratio
In each lab class, every student is provided with an individual PC to work on.
The University has over 1500 computers for 6000 full time UG/PG students
which is 4 : 1.
5. The number of department with UGC/SAP/CAS/DST/FIST etc, in
university.
All the University departments and schools have UGC/SAP/CAS/DST/FIST
etc, sponsored projects. The details of number of ongoing projects and

(i)
Students
(ii)
Alumni
(iii) Parents
(iv) Employers
(v)
Peers
Input from all of these stake holders is taken periodically to review and
improve the various dimensions of the program and the syllabi.
Student feedback: Student Response Survey is completed for every course in
each semester to get a formal feedback from students for the courses offered
in a semester and provide objective information to the faculty for selfappraisal, self-improvement & development. Formal student feedback is
obtained online through semester-by-semester mandatory course evaluation
using course outcome survey form and also through discussions with
individual students as well as student representatives on the Student
Consultative Committee (SCC) and also through meetings with student
societies. The student reaction survey results are used for revision of syllabi.
Faculty feedback: The department faculty members are members of various
academic bodies such as Department Academic Affairs Committee, Board of
Studies, Senate Undergraduate Committee and the Senate. The faculty
provides feedback on academic and curriculum matters as members of these
committees. Faculty members also routinely provide feedback and suggest
improvements to the academic program and suggest changes in syllabi at
22
formally scheduled faculty meetings as well as other discussions forums with
the department head and other meetings convened by the Dean/Director.
Alumni Feedback: Alumni input is solicited through formal and informal
meetings and also during the visits of the faculty to their respective
organizations for assessment of work term students. The Alumni are invited
to the campus for a formal gathering with their families after 15, 25 and 50
years of their graduation. The alumni has previously served on the Board of
the University which is the highest decision making body of the University.
The alumni are invited to participate in various curricular, co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities on the campus and the forum is used as an
opportunity to solicit their feedback. Often, alumni provide inputs for
improvements in the program when they visit the campus for recruitment of
final year students and are keen to contribute back to the place of their
graduation. Such inputs are valued and welcomed.
Industry feedback: The University is backed by a major business group
“Avantha Group” which has diverse businesses covering every discipline of
engineering. Also, several industry representatives serve on the Board of the
University, a group that is the highest decision making body. On many
occasions, feedback flows back to the department regarding the program
especially when the course scheme and syllabi are reported to the Board. The
University has a strong department named „Centre for Industrial Liaison and
Placement‟ that invites several large organizations (over 150 every year) for
student placement and industrial training during the project semester. The
Centre solicits formal feedback from the representatives of these
organizations and passes this information to the department for improvement
in the program.
Besides this, industry representative serve on the Department Board of
Studies (BOS) that frames the scheme of courses and the syllabus for the
courses offered. Also, all faculty members are required to visit organizations
at least twice in each year to one or two organizations for evaluation of
students placed for their work term in these organizations and are required to
collect formal feedback from these organizations. Feedback is reviewed and
used as required during the process of curriculum review or design of new
courses.
Statutory Studies: The External members of the statutory bodies of the
department provides a continuing mechanism for review of our program‟s
directions, weaknesses and accomplishments.

50. Projection of successful innovative practices.
Aspiring to become a globally acclaimed university, we have signed a
comprehensive institutional agreement to CONTEMPORIZE THAPAR
INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY with
Trinity College, the University of Dublin. Trinity as it is popularly called is
one of the world‟s oldest universities - over 422 years old and its
cutting‐ edge research, technology and innovation places it at the forefront of
higher education and is consistently ranked amongst the top 100 universities
in the world. The collaboration is a central component of a major
contemporisation programme that Thapar Institute of Engineering and
Technology University has undertaken.
The CONTEMPORARIZATION PROGRAM is envisaged to deliver a
research inspired, outcome based educational experience to the students. The
partnership covers all the major academic and research activities of the
University and will help address and bolster Thapar Institute of Engineering
and Technology University‟s position as a leading centre for higher education
in India and in the region. As a first step, we invited Trinity in November
2014 to conduct an academic review of our programs and governance
procedures. The findings of the review set out a path to achieve a closing of
the performance gap. An overall plan for change was then prepared for
implementing the findings of the academic review. As a first step the
harmonization of curriculum with Trinity was taken up to bring it up to date
with global standards. We have adopted the learning outcomes approach for
teaching with greater reliance on self-directed learning, projects and researchled teaching.
The agreement will also give students admitted to undergraduate engineering
programs at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology University the
opportunity to study at Trinity. Eligible students will pursue the first two
years of their course at Thapar before transferring to Ireland in years 3 and 4
of their program. A cohort of 8 students has been nominated to Trinity on a
scholarship program earlier this year to complete their year 3 and 4. Another
batch of 8 students will also go in 2016 before a larger group of 40 undertakes
this credit transfer program from 2017.
33
To give a major fillip to research, we have sponsored two research
professorships at Trinity. The Professors would spend time both at Thapar
and Trinity and would lead a major research effort which will culminate into
setting up of a State of the Art research centre at Thapar in the next five years.
As part of the contemporisation program, we are also setting up a Centre for
Academic Practice and Student Learning under mentorship of Trinity to
support and help the faculty hone their skills and teaching pedagogy. This
centre will support a whole-institutional approach to teaching and learning
and facilitate a broad adoption of this new learning paradigm. The training
and on-going professional development will be instrumental in establishing
the culture necessary for this initiative to grow and contribute meaningfully
to the contemporisation programme.
We have envisioned improving the laboratory and physical infrastructure on
the campus. A modernization plan for the important teaching and research
laboratories in consultation with Trinity has been developed. We have hired
world class foreign architects to develop key academic infrastructure that
would include new Computer Science block, Library, Lecture hall complex,
student residences and other academic blocks. Face lifting and modernization
of older buildings has also been planned in a major way. Thapar Institute of
Engineering and Technology University has also planned to implement an
international ERP system to manage and govern the academic, financial and
administrative functions.
We have undertaken major examination reforms during the year. In the new
procedure, the question papers are now being reviewed by Trinity. The
examination results will be discussed by an Examination Board which will be
convened to review sample answer scripts, projects and the marks obtained
by the students.
The partnership is now being expanded to collaborate in other areas of
academia and research which includes the programs offered by TU Schools of
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and the postgraduate and PhD programs.
Additional academic areas in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are also
being scoped.
An Innovation Centre/Venture Lab would be set up at TU to run accelerator
program open to teams of students with an early-stage business idea. The
program will support students in developing investor-ready ventures.
