Drama/18 mins
Language - English
Plot Summary
Mushtaq, a Kashmiri youngster of an ordinary family lives in a village near
Anantnag. Like the other thousands of people of that area Mushtaq's family is also
associated with the business of walnuts. Cracking of walnuts and separating its kernel
is a very tedious job. Mushtaq a person with creative instincts deeply feels the
problem of the people. He resolves to make a machine which will work faster and
efficiently as compared to human hands to break the nuts. With his scientific thinking
and investigative point of view he soon tastes the fruit of success.
His habit of constantly doing new experiments bought many new ideas in his mind.
He thinks about climbing a tree in a safe and easy manner. After studying the
available devices for climbing a tree he was successful in designing a comparatively
easier design with the help of which climbing trees and poles would become very
easy.
Objective:

episode................................... . As said earlier- Where there is a will there is a way.
And this is proven quite well by Jammu and Kashmir's Mushtaq Ahmed Dar a
resident of Anantnag. You might be wondering, after all what unique thing did
Mushtaq do? So here it is Radio serial..... Today’s issue presents a story of success
stemmed from unique ideas - "Kashmir ka Karishma" (Kashmir's Wonder).
SIGNATURE TUNE ……………………………… FADE OUT
SCENE ONE
Scene: A house in a village / Family members are cracking the walnuts and separating
the kernel (fruit inside).
(Voice of crackking the nuts / background is slow Kashmiri folk music is playing)
Tarannum - Though the kernel of walnuts are extremely delicious, but separating
them from the nut is not an easy task.
Abbas - Yes, look at the bad condition of our hands by cracking these nuts.
Shaukat - Hey... Will you keep talking or will some work be done. Move your hands
fast. If we do not deliver the kernels at the right time then the exporter might not give
us the order from next time.
Abbas - Don't know why god made nuts so hard... I wish they were as subtle as an
apple.
(Laughing sound)
(Sound of cracking the nuts increases for few moments then again decreases)
Abbas - Mushtaq is not seen anywhere.
Tarannum - He might be lost somewhere in the world of dreams.
Abbas - But one thing is for sure
Shaukat - What?
Abbas - At the age of 28 he has attained extraordinary talent.
Tarannum - Yes, he makes such beautiful toys out of wood. It appears that they
might just start talking. His imaginations are wonderful.
Shaukat - He cannot fill his stomach with only beautiful things. After all he must also
do some work....
(sound of someone walking/ after hearing the walking sound Shaukat stops talking
/ Walking sound comes closer)
Abbas - Oh, come Mushtaq bhai.
Tarannum - We were talking about you only.
Mushtaq - Why, what happened that you all remembered me.
Shaukat - Just like that. It seems you have bought a new hammer to crack walnuts
Mushtaq - I cannot even crack nuts as fast as you all do. (Sound of hammer being
kept down) Yes, but I do think of doing something, which will help us in getting rid
of this everyday noise.
(Suddenly Tarannum shouts)
Shaukat - Hey... have you again injured your finger?
Mushtaq - Cover your wound with band aid fast otherwise it will increase.
Tarannum - It’s not a big deal Mushtaq. By doing this work of cracking walnuts our
fingers are used to being injured.
Mushtaq - (quietly) I wish, I could do something to help you all.
------SCENE TRANSITION MUSIC------
SCENE TWO
Scene: A room in Mushtaq's house
(Slow voice of joining and breaking iron objects / knock on the door)
Mushtaq - Who is it? Come on in.
(Door opening sound)
Zahoor - (voice coming nearer) what are you doing Mushtaq?
Mushtaq - Nothing much Bhai.
(Again knock on the door)
Heavy voice of an old man - Mushtaq, are you at home?
Mushtaq - Yes, Master Sahib, please come in.. come in.
Retired Teacher - (voice coming nearer)... Now whose master am I, after retirement
I am just sitting jobless.
Zahoor - But sir, we are still using your knowledge of science.
Retired Teacher - Yes, what is the use of that knowledge if we do not use it in our
real life?
Mushtaq - Sir, since past few days a thought is coming in my mind.
Retired Teacher - What kind of thought?
Mushtaq - Walnuts of our Kashmir are famous all over the world for their delicious
taste. And behind this is the hard work of our people. I am thinking can we never get
rid of this work of cracking nuts with hand.
Zahoor - I have heard in the foreign countries we can get machines which can crack
nuts.
Mushtaq - Zahoor Bhai. I had also searched about them in the internet. Those
machines cost more than 60 to 70 thousand.
Retired Teacher - (astonished) Oh! Arranging for that much money is not possible
for us.
Mushtaq - Yes, that is why I am thinking that we should make a machine which can
separate the kernel and is cheap.
Zahoor - (which enthusiasm)... This is a wonderful idea.
Mushtaq - Yes, I am just trying for that. But we have neither the money nor the
technology.
(Noise / some moment quite)
Zahoor - No need to be disheartened Mushtaq. Don't you remember the program of
National Innovation Foundation in Ahemdabad?
Mushtaq - Hmm, I remember.
Zahoor - Unique Inventors from all over the country had gathered there. They were
all ordinary people like us. But they had exceptional views. Such views that wanted to
do something new.
Mushtaq - You are right friend. They all had achieved their goal without any special
training.
Retired Teacher - Look Mushtaq, if we make up our mind for doing something new
and we walk on the right path, then we will definitely reach our destination. There
will be some difficulties, but don't be afraid of them.
Mushtaq - What you are saying is also right.
Retired Teacher - Mushtaq, whatever you are trying to make, you will have to give
special attention towards its usability and cost.
Mushtaq - Ok master sahib, I think of doing something which will benefit our people,
increase employment in our area.
Retired Teacher - There are many organizations in our country which help those
people who are trying to make new inventions.
Mushtaq - Yes, I have also heard about some organizations like Vigyan Prasar,
CSIR and NIF. IIM Ahemdabad also plays a major role in bringing new inventions
into the market.
Retired Teacher - These organizations help in making the equipment more effective
and help in the marketing. But the first step has to be taken by us.
Zahoor - Ok Mushtaq, You continue your trials. I should leave now.
Retired Teacher - I should also leave now too Mushtaq. Inshallah you will be
successful. (Voice going far) If you require me then call me.
Mushtaq - (a bit loudly) Yes, yes for sure.
(Sound of breaking and joining iron things)
CROSS FADE TO ------SCENE TRANSITION MUSIC------
SCENE THREE
SCENE: Gathering in the honor of Mushtaq.
(Mix voices of the people in the gathering is heard)
On mike / Organizer's voice (after some disturbance becoming clearer slowly) Friends, please be quiet. All the guests of this program have reached here. And with
us we have our own... Mushtaq Ahmed Dar.
(Clapping sound)
Organizer - Friends, Finally Mushtaq has done a work on which we all are proud of.
Mushtaq has been successful in making a machine which can crack a nut without
damaging the kernel.
(Clapping sound)
Organizer - In honor of this success of Mushtaq, Anantnag Science Club has
organized this program. I would request Mushtaq to come and tell us something about
this unique machine of his.
(Clapping sound)
Mushtaq - Friends, thank you for your support. The wounds on your fingers directed
me toward the way for doing something new. This machine of cracking walnuts has
been made for you.
A Person from the gathering - What is the use of it?
Mushtaq - This machine can crack 80 kilogram of walnut in an hour. It can also peal
green walnuts.
Person from the gathering - This is wonderful. With a hammer we can hardly crack
10 kilogram of walnuts
Mushtaq - Not only this with this machine 20 kilogram almonds can also be broken
in an hour.
Another man from the gathering - For how much can we buy this machine?
Mushtaq - It will be available in approx. 6000 rupees. Walnut of every type shape
and hardness can be broken with this.
Third person from the gathering - Mushtaq bhai, how did you do this miracle?
Mushtaq - Look, I have made this machine using the things available in the
surroundings. Look here, at the top is the Feeding hopper, from here we put in the
walnut. These pass through these ring shaped rollers and break. Gap between both the
rollers can be set according to the shape of the nut.
A man from the gathering - Wow, this is a very nice thing.
Mushtaq - And the main big specialty is that during cracking the nut the machine
does not damage the kernel.
Fourth person from the gathering - Mushtaq, it might have been very difficult for
you to do all these things.
Mushtaq - Friends, after working on different designs for almost one and a half
month I have been able to complete it. It is our duty to try. I want that every youngster
among us should let his desires fly high which do not let him rest. Attach wings to
those expectations which encourage us to do something new. My good wishes are
with you.
(Clapping sound / low voice of people talking... wow...it’s wonderful now our
business will also grow)
CROSS FADE TO ------SCENE TRANSITION MUSIC------
SCENE FOUR
Scene: People walking in open area.
(Sound of trees movement due to the wind / also sound of people)
Mushtaq - Hello Master Sahib. How are you?
Retired teacher - I am fine. How are you Mushtaq, you are been seen after so many
days
Mushtaq - Yes, everything is fine. I had gone to Delhi about getting patent for the
machine of cracking walnuts. I have also talked with some official of Kashmir
University for the improvement of that machine. May be, I'll have to go to Srinagar
after few days.
Retired Teacher - Good, this is a very nice thing. It is very necessary to patent your
invention so that, on its design you'll have the professional and legal rights. Oh, and
what happened to your new project.
Mushtaq - I am working on it, sir. I have made a new design and sent it to NIF in
Ahemdabad. They were saying that a person from Gujarat has shown keen interest in
the design. I think something might work.
Retired Master - This calls in for a celebration Mushtaq. Keep working hard soon
you will get good results. Ok then, we will meet later.
Mushtaq - Surely we will meet. byyy.
------SCENE TRANSITION MUSIC------
SCENE FIVE
Scene: Courtyard of the house /morning time
(Sound of birds)
(Walking sound)
Naseerul - (voice coming closer) Mushtaq bhai, you are relaxing and reading
newspaper in the courtyard, why did you call me so early in the morning. Let’s see
what today’s news is.
(Naseerul sits on the chair)
Mushtaq - Hey don't sit now Naseerul, come with me.
Naseerul - But where are we going? And what have you taken in that bag.
Mushtaq - Come with me now, we have to go to Bansidhar my neighbor’s house.
(Sound of both of them walking)
Naseerul - That Bansidhar, who works in the electricity department as lineman?
Mushtaq- Yes, yes, that Bansidhar.
Naseerul - But, tell me what is in this bag.
Mushtaq - Don't be impatient Naseerul. You'll soon know.
(Sound of chirping of birds and sound of walking)
Naseerul - So Mushtaq, we have reached Bansidhar's house.
Mushtaq - Ok I am standing outside the gate you call Bansidhar.
(Walking sound/ Naseerul's walking sound/ slowly becoming low)
(Voice of opening Iron Gate)
Naseerul - (a low voice/ to give the impact of distance) Bansidhar Bhai, namaskar.
Please come out. Mushtaq has brought something for you.
Bansidhar - (a low voice) Will you not come inside Naseerul?
Naseerul - (a low voice) No, not now.
Bansidhar - (a low voice) Ok, I am coming outside .
(Sound of both of them walking and the sound coming nearer)
Bansidhar - Mushtaq Bhai, why are you standing in front of this electricity pole and
what is inside this bag.
Mushtaq - Bansidhar, this is a gift for you.
Bansidhar - What kind of gift?
(Sound of opening the zip of the bag / sound of iron clashing)
Naseerul - Ok, Mushtaq, so this is that amazing thing, which you were mentioning
few days back. Machine to defeat height.
Bansidhar - Machine to defeat height! I did not understand.
Mushtaq - Come nearer to this electric pole Bansidhar. You will understand
everything now. Let me fit this on my feet. (Light voice of clashing of iron) Wrap
this belt around the pole and tie it to the belt on my back.
(Little bit noise of iron clashing)
Mushtaq - Now look at my awesome machine. (Sound of electric pole clashing with
the iron / step by step)
Bansidhar - (with excitement) this is amazing. How easily you are climbing the pole
Mushtaq.
Mushtaq - (a low voice / giving the impact of heights) now look Bansidhar. I can
stop on the pole after leaving my hands.
(Sound of Kuldeep running and coming nearer)
Kuldeep (Bansidhar's nephew) - Hey Mushtaq uncle, how did you climb up?
(Iron clashing with the pole sound coming slowly nearer / to give the impact of
Mushtaq coming down)
Mushtaq - Friends now say how is my new machine.
Naseerul - Mushtaq bhai, this is a wonderful thing that you have made.
Mushtaq - Naseerul, we can even climb trees using this device. I had decided to
make this device on that day itself when I saw you carrying ladders on your shoulders.
You were repairing lamp of an electric pole.
Naseerul - Mushtaq, how does this device work?
Mushtaq - look, our body weight helps us in this idea. You had seen that when I was
climbing upwards on the pole. Then this frame tied to my legs was continuously stuck
to the pole. This force on the frame also prevented me from sliding down. Due to this
property we can stop and stay anywhere for a long time on the pole or tree.
Bansidhar - wow..this is wonderful. Now we can easily climb electric pole and repair
easily.
Mushtaq - yes Banshidhar, and as we are tied to this belt, we are completely safe.
Kuldeep - Mushtaq uncle, can we even run wearing it?
Mushtaq - (laughing a bit) No kid, for running our shoes are enough. If you want
you can also make such a thing. You can make something for those helpless people to
whom nature has not given enough strength to walk. You only need passion to
convert your ideas into reality.
Bansidhar - Mushtaq Bhai. You have made a very helpful machine. Now we will not
have to carry the ladder for climbing poles.
Naseerul - (with enthusiasm) Mushtaq, you have proved that you can go to any peaks
with your new ideas
Mushtaq - Friends, the good news is that a businessman from Gujarat has asked for
the license for production and marketing of this device. I would just say that we
should not let the thought of making something new go waste. Feel the importance of
that thought in everyday life.... then work hard to bring that idea into reality. Our
scientific mind will always make us successful.
Naseerul /Bansidhar (together) - You are the glory of Anantnag Mushtaq. We are
proud of you.
------ TRANSITION MUSIC------
Anchor - So friends, did you see how Mushtaq made the problems of people easy.
Many times we also wish that if things could be done easily it would have been so
nice. Steps taken to complete this wish of our mind help us to do something new. This
episode of Radio Serial ends here. We will return with another story of people who
were successful in doing unique discoveries and invention.......(next episode)....... .
Thanking you for joining us. Namaskar
