6-2 TEAM INFORMATION for 2015-2016
6-2 TEAM INFORMATION for 2015-2016 Welcome to Team 6-2! Here is a summary of the expectations and guidelines that should be followed throughout the school year by Team 6-2 students. We welcome you and look forward to a very successful year! Meyer Individuals & Societies Morrison Math Phillips Language & Literature Sullivan Science Bartel Inclusion Rachel Brown - Deputy Head of School and 6th Grade House Administrator Calhoun Student Agenda: The daily agenda entry will be posted for the students to copy into their agenda spiral when they enter each classroom and will remain on the board in most classes through the end of the day on Friday. Parents, please review the agenda for assigned work daily with your student! If absent on Friday, students should check with a classmate for the agenda entry or request the information from the teacher outside of instruction time. Students are expected to maintain an accurate and current Agenda in all classes. Weekly Averages in Agenda: Grades will be posted near classroom doors by ID numbers periodically. Current grades are always available through the Home Access Center (HAC) online. Parents, please review the agenda and grades each week with your child. Class Work, Homework, and Late Work Policy: Assignments, whether given as class work or homework, are due as designated by the teacher giving the assignment, usually the next class day. Unless otherwise indicated, homework is due at the beginning of the class period. Students should be aware of each teacher’s policies and procedures regarding the work in that class. Absences: Students are expected to complete work missed in the time prescribed in the student handbook. Students who have been absent should write down the agenda entries and check the teacherdesignated area on return for make-up work regarding any missed handouts or additional instruction. Students are responsible for making arrangements with the teacher to take any missed test. Students must bring a signed and dated note from a parent/guardian or doctor the day they return to school after an absence. Otherwise the absence is recorded as ‘unverified’. Supplies: Students are required to have necessary supplies to be successful in class. Students must have a binder to contain and organize papers and supplies and must bring it to class every day. Binders should have a pocket divider or folder for each class. Please check the supply list and each teacher’s requirements for additional supplies needed. Replenish paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, and other consumable supplies as needed. Snacks: Students may bring a nutritious snack (yogurt, fruit, granola bar, vegetables, etc.) to eat during the afternoon at a designated time. No chips, cookies, candy, or anything “sweet” can be brought for a snack. Students are not allowed to eat food in the hallways or common areas at any time. Students may also bring plain water to drink in a closed container, but no other drinks, including flavored waters, are allowed. NO Gatorade! Snacks will be available for purchase for $.50 as a Team 6-2 fundraiser. Gum is not allowed at any time anywhere on campus. Team 6-2 Daily Classroom Procedures: Calhoun will follow the CHAMPS classroom management and discipline plan. Please check the Student Code of Conduct on the Calhoun webpage and each teacher’s webpage for details. Dress Code: Students are expected to follow DISD dress code and should be appropriately dressed when they arrive on campus each day. Flip-flops and slides are not allowed on campus. See Calhoun Student Code of Conduct for details. Students must wear their ID on their person where it is visible at all times. If a jacket is worn, the ID must be outside the jacket. Team Detentions: Team detentions will be held Monday through Friday from 3:35 until 4:00 P.M. Students are expected to be on time and bring school work to complete during detention time. If students are tardy to an assigned detention, additional time will be added to the end of the detention. While in detention, students may fill out a reflection form based on the infraction being addressed. Written notification of each detention will be sent home for a parent signature which should be returned to the teacher by the day of the detention. Skipping a detention or failure to return the detention notice may result in additional disciplinary consequences. Team 6-2 Classroom Rules for Success: 1. Be Prompt. 2. Be Prepared. 3. Be Productive. 4. Be Polite. 5. Be Positive. 6. Be Professional. Team Rewards: Cougar Bucks may be given as an individual reward for following procedures, returning signed forms, helping other students, or for just being generally wonderful! Students will use Cougar Bucks for team rewards at intervals during the grading period. Other incentives for rewards may also be offered. Discipline: CMS follows the CHAMPS behavior system school wide. CHAMPS procedures are posted in each classroom and all common areas. We will use a variety of incentive techniques and systems to encourage correct behavior. Each student will have a Ticket Sheet each nine weeks for documentation of infractions. Students are required to have this sheet in every class every day. A lost sheet will result in a detention. Please see page 3 of this letter for more information. Sixth Grade will be using a ticket system to monitor student citizenship. We believe this system will better prepare your child for the behavioral expectations of middle school. This ticket system will help students abide by school and class rules, and students will have the opportunity to receive rewards for responsible behavior. Students earn Cougar Bucks for positive behavior. Cougar Bucks are individual cards which can be awarded on the spot at any time for observed positive behavior. These Cougar Bucks are retained by the student until the end of the grading period for a drawing or prize store. A variety of prizes will be awarded or traded at that time. Additionally, each student will be given a colored sheet of paper, the “Ticket Sheet”, at the beginning of the grading period with 18 tickets on it. If a student engages in negative behavior, the student risks losing a ticket. The teacher circles the class of occurrence on one ticket box, initials it, and writes the infraction. The student has now lost one ticket. Students can lose tickets for poor behavior in the classroom or in the halls. This may include excessive disruption, disturbing others who are trying to work, horseplay, and the like. Parents will be contacted by phone when a pattern begins to develop. When a student loses their 6th ticket, he/she will receive a detention. The same consequence will occur after losing the 12th ticket. If a student uses up all of his/her tickets for the grading period before it ends, he/she will be issued a third detention. Thereafter, any negative behavior may result in additional detentions or an office referral. Students may, at their option, buy back a lost ticket using Cougar Bucks. This gives the student the opportunity to amend an infraction and maintain a “clean” ticket sheet. The exchange rate will be on a sliding scale throughout the year. Students with a perfect Ticket Sheet at the end of each grading period will be invited to a celebration of their good behavior. This may be an ice cream party, pizza lunch, or other similar reward event. There is also a section for students to record and self-monitor their grade standing in each class. We recommend that parents check their child’s binder for these Ticket Sheets to monitor your student’s behavior and grades frequently. Please consider rewarding good results at home, too!
