It is hard to believe that it is already November. As we enter
this month and into the holiday season, I am noticing all the
the posts on Facebook about what we all are thankful for and
want to express what I am thankful for. I wish that we could
somehow celebrate this feeling of gratefulness throughout
the whole year. At Harpool the spirit of giving continues to
be as evident this year as it has been in years past. The HMS
students, parents and staff consistently give “above and
beyond” as we progress through our school year.
I am thankful for our Students. Recently our Students
donated over 1,000 cans to a local food bank and collected
coats and shoes for the needy. I am thankful for our Parents.
There were numerous parents that came out to help with
another very successful Longhorn Day. I am thankful for our
Staff. The Harpool Staff donated $6625 to the United Way.
This holiday season when you count your blessings, I hope
your list is long. and I hope that you have placed Harpool on
that list of blessings as I have placed all of you on mine.

Jeff Smith, Principal

A message from ourPresident...
WOW! What a fantastic first quarter of the year for the Longhorns! Every morning when I
drop my 7th grader off at HMS, I count my blessings at the wonderful experiences he and
his fellow Harpool students are enjoying. There’s always something happening on our
campus, and every bit of it is amazing!
We celebrated Longhorn Day and what a day it turned out to be! Thank you to the many
talented volunteers for lending your special touches to our student’s day of fun. We had
some one-of-a-kind activities this year with amazing results. I hope that your students
carried home some great memories to hold them over until 2015. I’d personally like to thank
Christy Stewart, our chairman, for an outstanding event.
As we approach the holiday season, Harpool PTA is continuing its endeavor to not only
raise the $9,000 for new laptops for our campus, but to also continue to support all of our
other campus needs. In January, we will be holding another Little Caesar’s Pizza Kit sale!
Just in time for the Super Bowl, be sure and order your “make at home” pizza kit.
Something NEW! In January, Harpool PTA will once again team up with our staff and clubs
for a joint fundraiser. Join us for our first online auction, benefitting all participating clubs
and the PTA. This is a new opportunity, and we need your help! Items are needed for the
auction, and any donations are much appreciated! As always, donations are 100% tax
deductible.
I hope that you are enjoying the Longhorn Ledger, and all of the valuable information it
provides. Janet Malmquist, our editor, is working hard to give our family communication a
facelift, adding: student written articles, tons of photographs, and valuable articles that will
help you connect with your Longhorn’s daily life at HMS. We welcome your input on how we
can make everyone feel informed about Harpool Middle School and your students.
GO HORNS!

Longhorn
Life
For students, by students
A Student Vacation - By Isabelle Kenneke
Longhorn day is a day we as students all
look forward to. It’s a day where kids can
relax, have fun, and hang out with their
friends. This Longhorn day was more than
great to say the least. So let me give you a
quick re-cap.
We had the orchestra booth where you
won anything, the classic confetti eggs
(in which all money goes towards a good
cause at that particular group), the photo
booth for the low price of 1 ticket, and lastly
a new addition; silly string. This booth
provided the fun that confetti eggs had but
it wasn’t as restricted as the eggs where.
6-2 should remember this reaction to it this
year because within the first 15 minutes of
Longhorn Day they were sold out!
Another popular booth was human
foosball: this was the theater booth held by
Mrs. Turek. Kids would go back again and
again to play. I mean who wouldn’t?
The photo booth has always been fun
for friends! I mean who doesn’t love
dressing up and putting on a silly face?
Last year it was a little crowded in the
makeshift “booth” so this year our Harpool
photographers straightened this out by
using our school as the backdrop. This
way you could fit all of your friends in the
picture.
I don’t know about you but when I think
of longhorn day the first thing that pops
into my head is the Student Council confetti
eggs. With their colorful shells they’re
perfect for a friendly revenge.
Between all of the food, sugar, and
excitement by the time Longhorn day ended
everyone was exhausted, but it was in a
good way such as the way you feel when
you’ve worked hard to achieve something
and you have finally done it! Hopefully all
of our fun booths are here to stay until next
year!

Reporters Wanted:
HMS students! We are looking for some reporters
to expand the Longhorn Ledger! If you would
like to submit an article, interview, report, short
story, original cartoon, original artwork/photo
or something you think your fellow classmates
would like to see, we would love to include it in
the new student life section of the Longhorn
Ledger. This is totally new this year so we may
have to work out some kinks but if we start smart
who knows where it could lead! All submissions
are subject to administration’s approval. If
interested, email Janet Malmquist at

Harpool Middle School
Grading Policy
The primary purpose of awarding grades is to
communicate student achievement in relation to
the state standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills (TEKS), and the district curriculum.
Harpool Middle School is committed to creating
an environment where quality instruction,
assessment, and evaluation occur to improve student
achievement. The academic grade should only reflect
this achievement. Multiple formative and summative
assessment tools are used to provide feedback and
accurately assess students’ mastery of the state
standards (TEKS) and district curriculum.

Lockheed Martin
engineers visit Adkins,
Harpool students
via Denton ISD on Harpool Website
For a school whose mascot is an aviator, Adkins
Elementary knew just the right company to invite for a
presentation: Lockheed Martin.
During the final week of October, Adkins invited the
aerospace and defense company to the school to show off
some of its work, including a flight simulator. Engineers
from the company also visited the school’s Lantana
neighbor, Harpool Middle School, to show off even more
equipment.
At both schools, Lockheed engineers discussed the
importance of STEM – science, technology, engineering
and mathematics – classes, though they also noted that all
courses are important in some way.
“Math and science are obviously important to technical
careers, but there’s a lot more to what we do on a daily
basis than just those two areas,” said Jeff Nymoen, an
operations technical lead at Lockheed’s aeronautics
division. “English is extremely fundamental in everything
we do – you’ll probably use it more than any other class
you take. If you can’t communicate well with people, it’s
hard to work as a team.”
more. At the end of the day, we have to work as a team to
make things happen.”
After hearing about how Lockheed and similar companies
operate, students had the opportunity to try flight
simulators, take quizzes about the aerospace field and
compete to create the tallest free-standing paper structure.
Additionally, equipment such as an ejector seat was on
display.
Camden Leake, an eighth-grader at Harpool, said the
event was both fun and educational, adding that it would
be an interesting career choice.
“I really liked flying the simulation plane – I learned how
hard it would be to fly a real one,” he said. “It was really
hard at the start, but I started getting the hang of it by the
end.”
Fellow Harpool eighth-grader Maddy Cummings agreed
with Camden’s assessment, as some activities at the event
were more challenging than they appeared.
“It was so hard when we were trying to make our paper
tower work and stand upright, but we finally started
figuring out what we had to do,” she said. “It looked pretty
easy at first, but it definitely wasn’t as easy as it seemed. It
was still very fun figuring out how to solve hard problems.”

visit to Harpool Middle School
Nymoen stressed that working well with others isn’t just
about communicating, however, it’s about becoming a
cohesive unit that can tackle important issues.
To illustrate his point, Nymoen explained how some of
the various types of Lockheed employees work toward
a common goal. While mechanical engineers work on
an F-35 fighter’s hardware, he said, the electrical and
software engineers are making sure the wiring and internal
computers are meeting the plane’s needs. The team also
encompasses a large staff that works in the background,
ensuring non-engineering tasks are met efficiently.
“To give you an idea of what makes that happen, that’s
probably 10 years of work,” Nymoen said of the F-35’s
vertical takeoff and landing system. “It’s not just the
engineers. It includes business people selling the planes,
manufacturing people making the planes, government
relations people working with our military clients and

Guyer students lead
anti-bullying pep rally
for middle schoolers
via Denton ISD on Harpool Website
Chants such as “Scream! Shout! Let your Spirit Out!” are
traditionally reserved for athletic gyms and sidelines, but
at a recent Harpool Middle School event, the message was
one of celebrating differences
and being kind to one another.
Guyer High School varsity cheerleaders held up signs that
displayed the word “Upstander,” a term used to encourage
students to stand up for themselves and others if they
ever see or witness bullying. Harpool students joined in,
chanting the word in unison and holding up signs with
the words “Respect,” “Hero,” and “Friend” as a show of
support.
“The difference between a ‘Bystander’ and an ‘Upstander’
is leadership,” said Ashley Thompson, a cheerleader and
member of the Guyer High Anti-Bullying Committee.
“Any student might be the target of a bully – even the most
popular student in school can feel it.”
And while the atmosphere remained fun and inviting for
everyone involved, the messengers and the delivery were
also very intentional.
“As a senior, I believe we are role models for younger
students and what we say has a bigger impact on
these kids. It’s important because kids at Harpool and
Crownover will being going to Guyer soon – they are the
next generation for Guyer,”Ashley said. “I want them to
know that at our school, it’s okay to be different.”
James Bailey, a Harpool eighth-grader, said that the he
feels safe at school and that the campus has a system in
place to address bullies.
“I know what to do if I see or hear of someone being
bullied,” he said. “I know to remove myself from the
situation and tell an adult immediately.”
Eighth-grader Maja Lorimer took special care to dress in
her best nerd costume for the rally, complete with a “Kick
Me” sign fashioned to her back. She said that the pep rally
was a fun way to communicate a very serious message to
students.
“Looking around the gym, it makes me know that we are
all the same on the inside even though we look different
on the outside,” she said.
Because of her own middle school experience, Ashley
said she felt compelled to reach out to students at Harpool
and Crownover middle schools this fall and spread the
message of being an “Upstander.” The fact that other
Guyer students were eager to help her accomplish this task
provided reassurance that she was doing the right thing.
During the pep rally, students pledged to be kind and
respectful to each other as students danced, cheered and
celebrated. The event marked the first time the studentled Guyer Anti-Bullying Committee has reached out to
include their feeder schools for an event and there is hope
to continue their efforts by visiting feeder elementary

Why join PTA?
The number one reason to join the Harpool Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. Parent
involvement is crucial to the health and well-being of a child. As a parent, you are the most important
influence in your child's success not only in school, but in life. Parent involvement in children’s education
allows kids to perform better in school, and navigate more easily some of the challenges of growing up. In
this role, you have a new and exciting opportunity to get involved with your child every day!
By becoming involved in Harpool PTA, you also help our school. Parents are the vital connection between
home and school, and studies prove that once parents become active in PTA and the school, test scores
improve.
But there are many more advantages to becoming a part of PTA:
•
Get Connected and Stay Informed: There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your school.
•
Discover Great Resources: The PTA offers a variety of programs designed for parents as well as
students.
•
Tap into a Network: PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, building rapport
and discussing issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences.
•
Watch Yourself Grow: By volunteering with your PTA, you put your skills and hobbies to use for a noble
cause—your child and all children in the community. LONGHORN DAY is a great VOLUNTEER
opportunity!
•
Speak Up: PTA can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at your child’s school.
•
Witness Improvement: By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping
make positive changes. Our PTA plays an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements,
curriculum-based programs, and social events.
•
Be a Role Model: By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you
place on education.
•
Enjoy Substantial Benefits: Individuals and local units can take advantage of a host of benefits from
PTA membership including discounts and offers from member benefits providers and sponsors, magazine
subscriptions, leadership training, e-newsletters and much more.
Please join the Harpool PTA and be a part our efforts in
“Developing life-long learning skills for today’s and tomorrow’s world.”
For Membership Information please contact Missy Raymond at [email protected]

Red Ribbon Week 2014: Love Yourself, Be Drug Free
Harpool Middle School participated in another GREAT Red Ribbon
Week this year! The theme for
Red Ribbon Week was “Love
Yourself, Be Drug Free.” Students
and Staff participated in theme
days to raise awareness about
drug and alcohol prevention.
Harpool “teamed up against
drugs” with Twin Day, showed
that “Drugs are Wacky Tacky”
with Tacky Day, stood “United
Against Drugs,” and had Jersey
Day to show that “Drugs Won’t
Ruin Our Game.” Red Ribbon
Week came to a close with Pink
Out Day for drug and alcohol
prevention and bully prevention.
By “pinking out” our school, we
showed that everyone deserves
respect and that it is everyone’s
responsibility to be respectful of
ourselves and others. In addition
to theme days, students signed
pledges to grow up safe, healthy,
and drug free. These pledges will
be displayed as a visual representation of Harpool’s commitment
to a drug-free future. Students
received wearable Red Ribbons
for participation in the pledge!
While Red Ribbon Week has
concluded, we hope that the
“Love Yourself, Be Drug Free”
message doesn’t also end. Teens
that regularly talk to their parents and guardians about drugs
and the pressure to use drugs
are 42% less likely to use drugs.
Statistics say that only 1/4 of
teens are talking to their parents
about these issues. So, continue
the conversation! More information can be found at the following resources:

The Donut Eating booth at Longhorn Day was such a hit!! The
cheerleaders sold out of donuts very quickly! Everybody was
getting in on the action of racing to finish their donut first without
using their hands, and only having 10 seconds to do it in. There
were cheerleaders participating, football players, and even
Mr. Smith had to try to beat his opponents. However, of all the
participants, Victoria Popiel from 6-2 was the donut champion.
In the 3 times she played, she ate her entire donut within the 10
seconds!!! Way to go Victoria!

Harpool Band
Harpool Bands Shine at Auditions
The Harpool Bands have had a fantastic fall with great performances at our concert,
Harpool and Guyer football games, Sounds of the Stadium, and the U-Nite elementary
festival. Additionally, several of our students were named to the Denton ISD All-District
Band and TMEA All Region Band based on their audition. We have many exciting dates
ahead as we prepare for our winter concert as well as the Symphonic Band’s performance
at the Music for All National Festival. We would love to see you at our Winter Concert
on December 9th, or any of our other performances throughout the year. Thank you as
always for the fantastic support we receive from the Harpool Community!

Dear Parents and Students,
11-7-14
Harpool is offering incentives to students who work on the Think Through Math
program. Every HMS student has an account and has been given a TTM “start card” with
their username and password, ask them! Contact your child’s math teacher if you need
the information again.
Around January 15th, all students that have completed at least 15 lessons will
be invited to the TTM cook out. Mr. Smith will cook hot dogs. Mrs. Richardson will raffle
off prizes. Students will receive a raffle ticket for every lesson they complete. The more
lessons completed, the better the chance of winning.
Do NOT print the certificates!
Do NOT print the certificates!
Do NOT print the certificates!
The TTM accounts stay active until mid-August so we can see all the data, eliminating the
need to print certificates.
FYI-Another free math resource is the Khan Academy website. Here you find a math
teacher, Sal, doing math examples on a neon board. You can chose the topic to match
the work going in math class or for another look at what you are learning in your TTM
pathway.
Here is to hoping we shut down the whole school for a picnic!

AT INVITATIONAL MEET
On Saturday, November 8th, the UIL Academic team made a strong showing at the Lake Dallas Meet. They dominated several
events and finished in 2nd Place overall. These terrific results came about by the hard work of both students and coaches. A
special thanks also goes out to the parents who helped keep everyone organized and cleaned up the disaster area where we
lived all day. The next contest is the District Meet on May 16th. Practice will start back in January to prepare for that meet. Anyone
interested in taking part in the competition can contact Mr. McClanahan at 940-369-1750 or [email protected].

Volunteer Information
300 + names have been cleared!!!!
We are
getting more and more names as the weeks go by. When you come
to sign in at school please check to see if you have been one of the
names cleared. If not, continue to sign in as a visitor and manually
track your hours. In the meantime, please keep track of the hours you
work at and off campus. A request for hours will be made once a month throughout the school
year but you are welcome to send an email with your total at any time to the email below.
I’d also like to thank all the volunteers who came out to help during Longhorn Day and
helped make it the success it was. We couldn’t have done it without you.
NEW - Denton ISD Volunteer System
The volunteer application (background check) is now live and can be accessed at
http://www.dentonisd.org/Page/48779.
Everyone who wishes to volunteer at the school or go on field trips for the 2014-15 school
year MUST complete this application. Please register by using the same email and password
that you used to register your child in infosnap. The new procedure allows you to check off all
campuses you plan on volunteering at this year within Denton ISD.
I coordinate all volunteer hours for anything related to our school whether it is a school function,
donation or PTA activity and report them to the district. If you are a parent who volunteers for
concessions at sporting events, prepares meals for athletics (lunch or dinners!!), helps in choir,
band, orchestra or theater, your hours count for the school. If you did anything at home to help out
a teacher, donated items for Longhorn Day, helped with
something related to football or volleyball practices send
in your estimated hours! If you donate something to the
school whether food or other good you can claim 30
minutes of volunteer time! If you go to the store and
purchase food to cook for staff or students at the school
count hours for your purchasing trip, cooking time, serving
and cleanup. Who knew Harpool could earn volunteer
hours in so many ways!
Your time and donations are very much appreciated
by the school, staff and PTA. Thank you for
volunteering at Harpool Middle School!

Denton ISD Inclement
Weather Policy
Denton ISD’s policy regarding weather procedures is as follows:
The decision to close schools based on inclement weather is made by 6:30 a.m. when
possible. School closing decisions are reported on the Denton ISD website, Twitter account
and Facebook page; closings are also broadcast on major local television and radio
stations.
Closings are also announced on the district’s main telephone line at (940) 369-0000. Denton
ISD uses an automated call-out system for weather alerts. Please be sure to have your
current contact information on file with the school your child attends (if you have multiple
children, make sure your contact information is at all the DISD campuses you have a child
at.) You can also sign-up to receive an e-Alert in your email.
Please note: Media outlets only inform viewers and listeners of those school districts that
are either starting late or canceling school. If no information is given from the district or
media outlets, Denton ISD schools will be starting at their regular times.

Meet Dr. Jamie Wilson
Superintendent of Schools for Denton ISD http://www.dentonisd.org/Page/35519
Denton Independent School District has been committed to providing
a quality education since it was founded in 1882. The district – located
about 25 miles north of Dallas and Fort Worth – encompasses 180
square miles and contains all or parts of 16 cities, communities or
major developments. With its huge geographical area, the Board and
district staff work together as a cohesive team to help bridge the gap
between these numerous cities, towns, communities and major developments.
Not only does the school district community support outstanding school facilities, it
demands excellence in its educational programs. It is truly an educational community where
citizens are highly engaged in education – especially with two major universities and a
community college within its boundaries.
Although it covers a large area, Denton ISD’s unique small town community’ environment
separates it from the growing, larger suburban school districts within the Dallas-Fort Worth
Metroplex. Denton ISD is able to offer all the programs available from larger school districts
while maintaining a small community climate.

Society’s Future Depends on
Educating All Children
Written by Dr. Jamie Wilson, Denton ISD Superintendent
Posted by Anthony Tosie at 10/9/2014 8:00:00 AM on
DENTONISD.ORG
It is no accident that our nation’s commitment to
a public government was very quickly followed
by a commitment to a public education,
accessible to all. A healthy democracy requires
an educated citizenry. In a day when teachers
and public schools are criticized at every turn
and the problems of public education lead many
a politician, business leader, and arm chair
educator to question its value, we would do well
to pause and wonder at the ambitious task we
have undertaken as a society: we will educate
everyone.
Whether you come to kindergarten prepared or
not, we will educate you. Whether you speak
English or another language, we will educate
you. Whether anyone has ever read you a book
before, we will educate you. Whether you come
to school with a full belly or you have not eaten
since the school fed you yesterday, we will
educate you. Whether you come from a loving
family or from generations of abuse, we will
educate you.
We do this because we understand that the
future of our society depends on it. We are
taking that which is good and true about our
civilization and the civilizations around the
world and transmitting it to the next generation.
cannot change a school without changing the
culture of the surrounding town.” One of the
best ways to begin such systemic change is to
create and provide opportunities for community
engagement. School districts need to seek
partnership opportunities with entities such as
local non-profits, municipalities, faith based
organizations, etc.
When our communities Make Education a
Priority by taking action steps to get engaged
in our schools, our students are the immediate
benefactor and our economic impact is the long
term benefactor. When business and community
leaders join with their local educational entities
to “invest” time and talent in the development
of our next generation the economic prowess of
our nation and state will be the insurmountable.
The talent within the walls of our public schools
has the capacity to create a future unlike
anything we as a nation have ever seen.
We challenge you to get engaged, create
an initiative, and make a difference, Make
Education a Priority. Will you join us as we seek
to change our community one kid at a time? Ask
your local school how you can help.
This article and others by Dr. Wilson can
be found on the Denton ISD website under
Superintendent’s Column.
http://www.dentonisd.org/Page/60766
We also know that intersecting the lives of
kids as early as possible is a smart, long-term
strategy for tackling poverty. In one North
Texas school district, Denton ISD, 45 percent of
students are economically disadvantaged. 31
percent are at risk of dropping out of school. A
challenge like this will take an entire community
rolling up their sleeves and getting to work.
Schools cannot do it alone.
It is imperative for communities all across Texas
to come together in support of our public school
children. In Jamie Vollmer’s book, Schools
Cannot Do It Alone, Mr. Vollmer writes as his

SCHOOL BOARD
REPORT
A Summary of Denton ISD Board of
Trustees Meeting on Oct. 28, 2014
Dwight Goodwin, director of instructional technology, and
Katherine Myers, a teacher at Ryan High, provided the
Board an overview of Google Classroom and how it is
being implemented in Denton ISD.
Mr. Goodwin said the advantages of Google Classroom
are its cost-free implementation and its ability to let
students work on their assignments at school, from home
or anywhere they have a connection to the Internet. It
also allows constant interaction between teachers and
students, allowing for quick and consistent feedback on
assignments, projects and grades.
Mrs. Myers addressed the Board’s questions about
connectivity issues said students have access to Google
Classroom through chrome books and computers in the
classroom and are also able to access their coursework
through their mobile phones or tablets. Students are also
able to check out devices from her classwork to complete
their assignments.
“They are able to complete their work through a single
document and turn it with a click of a button,” Mrs. Myers
said.
The district currently has more than 100 teachers using
Google Classroom regularly at the secondary level and
a handful of elementary teachers incorporating it with
various lessons.
Board gets update on Career Technology Education
Carla Ruge, dean of instruction at the Advanced
Technology Complex, provided the Board an update on
the district’s Career Technology Education curriculum.
Student participation is on the rise due to recent changes
to the high school graduation requirements as a result
of HB 5. Currently, 7,385 students participate in the CTE
program and 1,788 participate on the ATC Campus.
The number of CTE students seeking to complete
licensure or certification programs, on all high school
campuses has increased from 435 to 749 in one year.
Partnerships with area businesses and internships for
senior level students continue to be a highlight of the
program, but more opportunities are needed. Several
students work closely with area businesses and their
success translates directly into career pathways and
choices for young people.
Informational outreach for students and their families is
an ongoing process and begins early. ATC staff hosts
an elementary career fair and a middle school career
carnival, providing those students exposure to CTE early
in their educational career. Each high school has a career
counselor on staff to assist student with enrollment in
classes and areas of focus.
To further promote CTE programs, the Chamber of
Commerce will partner with ATC staff on the second
annual Career Planning Fair that is scheduled for Nov. 5
from 1-4 p.m. at the ATC.

administrative services, conducted an open public hearing
that reviewed the criteria and the achievements of the
district regarding the School FIRST (Financial Integrity
Rating System of Texas) award. The district received
a perfect score of 70, which translates into a rating of
Superior Achievement, and has earned this honor for 10
consecutive years.
The annual award factors accounting practices, system
audits, instructional expenditures, property tax collection,
district investments, fund balance and other items through
an assessment of 20 indicators.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) developed the system
to ensure that Texas public schools are held accountable
for the quality of their financial management practices.
The system is designed to help districts across the state
improve practices, manage their financial resources and
direct more funds to instructional programs.
Board receives update on Early Childhood Education
Vicki Sargent, executive director for elementary academic
programs, presented a report on the current Early Childhood Education programs in the district.
Mrs. Sargent stated that the addition of pre-kindergarten
programs at four elementary schools – Lee, Rivera, Newton Rayzor and Ryan – helped boost the overall enrollment of Pre-K students in the district to 768 students (as
of October 2014), an increase of 161 students from May
of last year.
The district’s addition of the Fred Moore Day Nursery
School at Gonzalez has added an additional 61 students
receiving Pre-K instruction on a half-day basis. The addition of the Fred Moore program at Gonzalez has also

increased the retention rate at Gonzalez, maximizing the
use of the facility.
The gain in enrollment, coupled with the state’s portion of
Pre-K funding per student and expenses incurred by the
district, has resulted in a financial increase of $332,440.
Mrs. Sargent said the district will continue to monitor
and look to increase the attendance numbers as well as
pursue partnerships to increase opportunities to students
who could benefit from Pre-K programs.
