SHINGLETON FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 116 ENTRY YEAR: 2007 Compartment Acreage: 1429 County: Schoolcraft Revision Date: Sept. 27, 2005 Stand Examiner: Kristen Matson Legal Description: T45N R14W Section 1; T46N R14W Sections 35 & 36 RMU (if applicable): Management Goals: Timber production and wildlife habitat management. This compartment is adjacent to the Bullock Ranch area which has traditionally been managed for wildlife species using large openings. Soil and Topography: The topography consists of flat, low, wet ground with steep, high ridges and islands. Large marshland with Markey- Mucky Peat, Deford Muck and Carbondale-Lupton-Tawas Muck soils; islands of pine with Seney- Deford Complex and Deford-AuGres-Rubicon Deep Water Table Complex soils. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Seney National Wildlife Refuge borders the compartment on the south, the remainder of the compartment is surrounded by state owned land. Unique, Natural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): Currently under review by Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): None identified at this time. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: The Clark Ditch is found in this compartment. Clark Ditch is classified as warm-water, therefore, beaver are not a concern here. However, BMP's should be followed to prevent sediment from entering this system. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment lies south of M-28 and 1.5 miles west of Seney. The entire compartment lies within the Seney marsh/ridge complex. Surveyor notes indicate that marsh dominated the pre-settlement landscape of this compartment. Areas that were forested at that time consisted primarily of tamarack with smaller amounts of white and red pine mixed in. While the marsh remains largely intact, the current forest areas are now dominated by red pine and jack pine. Wildlife habitat objectives in this compartment include maintaining the integrity of the wetland complex while providing a diversity of forest conditions on the forested ridges. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Ordovician Utica Shale subcrops below the glacial drift. The Utica does not have a current economic use. Gravel pits at not found in the general area and potential appears to be limited. There is no commercial oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: Most of this compartment is inaccessible by vehicles. Survey Needs: None at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: There are no DNR recreational facilities within the compartment, but the area is used for bear and deer hunting. Fire Protection: Fires are generally caused by lightning strikes. Organic soils sometimes cause difficulty in fire suppression. Lack of roads makes access to fires difficult. Additional Compartment Information: Ø The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: ♦ Cover Type by Age Class ♦ Cover Type by Management Objective ♦ Compartment Volume Summary ♦ Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors ♦ Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors Ø The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: ♦ Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types ♦ Proposed treatments ♦ Proposed road access system ♦ Suggested potential old growth TABLE 3: Page 1 of 1 10/05/2005 2:31:07 PM Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Operations Inventory System Individual Compartment Report LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST SHINGLETON FOREST AREA COMPARTMENT: 116 SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY Table 3 (acres shown in boxes) COVER TYPE Not Coded 0-9 10-19 20-29 STAND AGE CLASS 30-39 33 Aspen 40-49 50-59 60-69 70-79 80-89 90-99 100109 110119 120129 130139 140149 150159 All Aged 21 54 6 Grass 6 10 Jack Pine Total 12 42 115 56 235 Lowlnd Brush 662 662 Non Stocked 79 79 19 Red Pine 77 286 6 3 Water 3 2 White Pine Total 750 388 29 45 42 213 288 2 56 6 1429 TABLE 3A: Page 1 of 1 10/05/2005 2:31:59 PM Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Operations Inventory System Individual Compartment Report LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST SHINGLETON FOREST AREA COMPARTMENT: 116 SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY Table 3A (acres shown in boxes) COVER TYPE A Aspen A S V C G H MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVE TYPE J I L P N Q X O B R K Y F E T D U M Z W 54 54 G Grass 6 J Jack Pine 6 235 L Lowlnd Brush 235 662 X Non Stocked 662 79 R Red Pine 79 388 Z Water 388 3 W White Pine Total Total 54 6 235 662 79 388 3 3 2 2 2 1429 10/05/2005 2:32:06 PM LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Operations Inventory System Individual Compartment Report SHINGLETON FOREST AREA TABLE 10: Page 1 of 1 COMPARTMENT: 116 SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY Table 10 - COMPARTMENT VOLUME SUMMARY - ALL STANDS COMPARTMENT SUMMARY TOTAL VOLUME CUT VOLUME Hardwood 596 Cds Hardwood 213 Cds Softwood 8509 Cds Softwood 1666 Cds Softwood 340 Mbf Softwood Sum TotVol 9785 Cds Total Cmpt Acres 1429 Sum CutVol 27 Mbf 1933 Cds Acres Proposed For Cut.............. 177 Proposed Treatments With NO Limiting Factors SHINGLETON FOREST AREA Stand Cover Type Acres 80 X0 55 comnts Fmd Age Site Index Mgt Obj other non-stocked or non-forest or nonproductive Condition Method Cut nonstocked Compartment: 116 Harvest Priority Cultural Need 0 cleaning & weeding Entry Year: 2007 FDF Status : M-28 R-O-W.
