GWINN FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT 52 ENTRY YEAR: 2009 Compartment Acreage: 1928 GIS acres: 1928 County: 52 Marquette Revision Date: 9/06/2007 Stand Examiner: Kevin LaBumbard Legal Description: T44N, R26W, Sections 25,26,27 Management Goals: Improve the quality of the Northern Hardwoods stands through selective management while maintaining species diversity, (including the conifer content) and den trees for wildlife. Additional goals are to provide age-class distribution of Aspen by harvesting selected stands. Considerations for species diversity, retention, coarse woody debris, and BMP’s will be included with every harvest plan. In addition, the large wetland complexes in this compartment will remain as is to provide the many wildlife, riparian and vegetative values contained within. Soils and topography Terrain is relatively level to lightly sloping with soils ranging from mucks in the bog areas to excessively drained sands in the southwest portion of the compartment. Major soil associations include the Sagola-Rubicon Complex, Emmet-Escanaba, Paquin-Finch sand, and Rubicon sand. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: This compartment lies in the center of a large block of land owned entirely owned by the State of Michigan. There are no private ownerships adjacent to this compartment. Unique, Natural Features Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features Special Management Designations or Considerations: Special Conservation Area Stands: 3,4,6,9,10,47,50,53,54,57,58,59,60,72,73 Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: The Little West Branch of the Escanaba River, Chandler Brook. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: For all SCA, biodiversity maintenance stands-maintain as movement corridors for wildlife species and the protection of riparian areas. Promote biological legacies such as snags, coarse woody debris, and intact nutrient cycles. Strive for best possible age class distribution in aspen stands. Maintain or increase biodiversity in northern hardwood stands through retention of associate species and/or under-planting efforts where feasible. Improve hunter walking trail and maintain wildlife openings. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Sections 25 - 27, T44N-R26W, Marquette County Surface sediments consist of medium-textured till. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Cambrian Trempealeau Formation subcrops below the glacial drift. The Trempealeau could be used for stone. Gravel pits are located in Section 27, and potential is good on the drumlins. Abandoned iron mines are located six miles to the northeast. This area has not been previously leased. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: Vehicle access to the compartment is excellent via County Road 438, Ross Grade and several “2 tracks”. Survey Needs: none Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Recreational activity for this area is primarily for upland hunting of ruffed grouse, woodcock and whitetail deer. There is a State maintained hunter walking trail in the south central portion of the compartment that is scheduled for mowing. Fishing is also fairly popular along the Little West Branch of Escanaba River and Chandler Brook. Fire Protection: This compartment has a low risk for wildfire. There is an occassional spruce/for pole tree and scattered large basswood and sugar maple "wolf" trees. The sale prescription will exclude the riparian zone and retain the large hardwoods. Wld : Cut no white pine or oak if it exixts. 12 comnts M6 46 60 northern hardwood unevenaged selection 1 Fmd : High site quality. Stand is predominantly sugar maple and basswood with an occasional white birch and upland cedar. Transitioning to M9. Only a few regen gaps from previous treatment but those gaps have good regeneration. Marking will be limited to sugar maple stems, retaining all the minor species ie. basswood, w. birch, cedar, white pine, hemlock. Wld : Cut no hemlock, white pine, or cedar. Underplant hemlock and/or white pine after sale is completed. 17 comnts M6 24 66 northern hardwood unevenaged selection 2 Fmd : Nice stand of predominately sugar maple, with basswood, white birch, and yellow birch. Additional species include upland cedar, hemlock, and white spruce. Retain all the minor species ie. basswood, w. birch, cedar, white pine, hemlock. Regeneration is essentially non-existant. Wld : Cut no hemlock, white pine, or cedar. Underplant with hemlock and/or white pine after sale is completed. 21 comnts A6 15 90 50 aspen (upland) mature final harvest 2 Fmd : A5F4M4 Occasional cedar. Aspen is good sized and healthy. Almost all of the spruce are large, super-canopy trees. Retain cedar and the large spruce. Wld : Cut no white pine or oak if it exists. Keep some of the large windfirm spruce for diversity and seed source. 25 comnts 12 87 65 aspen (upland) mature final harvest 2 Fmd : Fairly well stocked aspen stand with a good mix of softwood and white birch. Portions of the stand are wetter with more Balm, almost a "P" type. The aspen is big and mature, average dbh is 12"-14". Scattered throughout the stand are large, super-canopy white spruce. Retain all cedar, white pine, and duper-canopy spruce. 31 comnts A6 M6 5 55 northern hardwood unevenaged selection 2 Fmd : Small hardwood stand along Co. Rd 438. Also contains a few large aspen, basswood and an occasional upland cedar. Cutting will be limited to the w. birch and hard maple. Retain the large aspen, basswood, and cedar. Wld : Cut no white pine, hemlock, or cedar. Underplant with hemlock and/or white pine after sale is completed. 40 comnts A6 8 82 60 aspen (upland) immature final harvest 3 Fmd : West of stand 41 but lower and wetter. Conifer content is significant, and transitioning to a spruce/fir stand. Aspen is fairly sparse in areas.. Contains a large stick nest in a 16" aspen about 30' up. Wld : Watch for future use of stick nest and determine species that constructed if possible. Protect stick nest and buffer area using MNFI guidelines. Protect trees with similar structure as tree with nest and survey for additional nests in area. Cut no white pine and make an effort to protect some of the white pine saplings during sale. 41 comnts A5 22 57 65 aspen (upland) immature final harvest 3 Fmd : Stand is located on a high and dry sidehill sloping to a wet cedar stand on the west. There are ocasional upland cedar, hemlock, and red maple stems in the stand with pockets of M2-M3. Stocking is variable from a an A5 to heavily stocked A6. As usual, all cedar, hemlock, and white pine will be retained. Wld : Cut no white pine, cedar, or hemlock. Survey for stick nests when on site in Stand #41. 62 comnts M6 7 66 northern hardwood unevenaged selection prescribed for fdf treatment 2 Fmd : This is a good quality hardwood stand with scattered upland cedar. Basswood and soft maple become more prevalent moving east through the stand as does the fir in the understory. Occasional yellow birch and hemlock can be found along the northern transition zone. Wld : Cut no hemlock, white pine, cedar. Underplant hemlock and/or white pine after sale is completed. 402 G0 3 60 grass nonstocked 0 opening maintenance Wld : Maintain wildlife opening. Rollerchop to discourage brush and saplings from encroachment. 403 comnts G0 5 65 grass nonstocked 0 opening maintenance Fmd : Natural opening with spruce and fir.
