ROSCOMMON FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 24 Compartment Acreage: 1767 ENTRY YEAR: 2009 County: Roscommon Revision Date: 08-28-2007 Stand Examiner: J. Hartman Legal Description: T24N R4W sections 19, 30 and 31 Management Goals: Manage in conjunction with the plan for the Deadstream swamp and surrounding area that fall within the designated boundaries. Soil and Topography: Soils include Rifle peat and Saugatuck sand. The compartment is primarily swamp with a couple of small upland stands along the north edge. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Solid state ownership except the 80 acres of upland in the northeast corner of section 19. This parcel is split into several smaller parcels. Unique, Natural Features: Great blue heron, Bald eagle, Blanding’s turtle, Rainbow mussel, Osprey, Common moorhen, Black tern, Least bittern, Secretive locust, and Loon have been identified in the vicinity. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: The old map indicates that there is an old trappers cabin located within the compartment. No formal archeological records were found and the site was not able to be located during this entry cycle. Special Management Designations or Considerations: The Deadstream Swamp is a Registered Natural Landmark. State land designations put this into the Special Conservation Area (SCA) category. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Cole Creek and Fur Farm Creek are both located within this compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: The Deadstream Swamp historically served as a winter deer yard. The compartment was inventoried in late January and little evidence of yarding was observed. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel, postglacial alluvium and peat and muck. The glacial drift thickness varies between 200 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Mississippian Michigan Formation. The Michigan is quarried for gypsum in other areas of the State. Most of the good gravel pits are associated with upland areas. The nearest gravel pit is located just to the northwest and potential appears to be limited. East Norwich Field is located just to the north. The field has produced over 5.9 million BO and 15.7 Bcf gas primarily from the Devonian Richfield Formation. It is in secondary recovery operations currently. None of the State land in the Compartment is currently leased. Vehicle Access: Robinson Lake Road is the primary access route to this area.. There are no state forest two tracks within the compartment. Some illegal 4-wheeler activity was evident in a few locations. Survey Needs: None needed. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Lack of access makes recreational opportunities difficult for this compartment. Due to the lack of pressure some good hunting and trapping opportunities exist for the general public. However, the landowners to the north appear to be the primary users. Fire Protection: Lack of access and fuel buildup in the birch / black spruce mixtures could contribute to large fire growth in this compartment.
