ROSCOMMON FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION
COMPARTMENT # 43 ENTRY YEAR: 2009
Compartment Acreage: 1215
County: Roscommon
Revision Date: 4-11-2007
Stand Examiner: Jason Lewicki
Legal Description: T24N R01W Sections 19 & 20
RMU (if applicable):N/A
Management Goals: To maintain species and structural diversity while managing the ecosystem for health,
productivity, sustainability and recreation within the compartment.
Soil and Topography: Soils generally are Roselawn sand and sandy loam. The topography throughout most
of the compartment is level to slightly rolling. The topography does rise towards the north end of the
compartment.
Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Much of this
compartment is under state ownership. The SESE of section 20 is under private ownership. There is heavy
oil and gas use within this compartment with numerous well sites.
Unique, Natural Features: None known
Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None known
Special Management Designations or Considerations: None known
Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Some drainages and a large bog found within the center of the
compartment.
Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Provide and maintain habitat for a variety of game and non game species.
Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Sections 19 & 20, T24N-R1W,
Roscommon County
Surface sediments consist of ice-contact and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The
glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Mississippian
Michigan Formation and Marshall Sandstone. The Michigan is quarried for gypsum and the Marshall was
previously used as a building stone in other areas of the State. Most of the good gravel pits are associated
with upland areas. The nearest gravel pit is located in Section 8 and potential is good on the uplands. Part of
St. Helen Field is located in the Compartment. The field has produced over 8.7 million BO and 14.7 Bcf gas
from the Devonian Richfield Formation and is in secondary recovery operations currently. State minerals are
leased and held-by-production in the secondary recovery operations.
Vehicle Access: Vehicle access is very good in this compartment.
Survey Needs: None
Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Good vehicle access provides excellent hunting opportunities.
The snowmobile trail runs through this compartment.
Fire Protection: With mainly hardwood cover types and good vehicle access fire protection should not be
a concern.
