Note: This compartment was inventoried using the new IFMAP system.
Many differences exist in how data and treatments are developed and
presented. The IFMAP system is still under development.UPDATE: RED
PINE PROJECT PHASE 2 PROJECT. STAND 15 WILL BE FINAL HARVESTED AND REPLANTED TO RED PINE.
Stand Examiner: Sterrett and Lint
Legal Description: T24N, R10W, Sections 7-9, 16-18
T24N, R11W, Sections 12 and 13
1. Soil Series: Mostly Rubicon-Montcolm-Graycalm association. The
Tawas-Crosswell-Lupton association dominates the lowlands. Karlin
series is found in the hardwood areas.
2. Terrain: Relief elevation changes of up to 300 feet. Steep river
bluffs and banks along with upland and lowland plateaus. Well
drained uplands and poorly drained lowlands.
3. Ownership Patterns, Development & Land Use: Three private land
holding areas: the NE ¼ Sec. 12, the N ½ of the NE sec. 7, and, the
NENW, SENW & NESW in Sec. 8. The NENW of Sec. 8 has an additional
adjoining strip of land in the NWNE 33 feet by 624 in order to
access it off the county road. The other two forties in sec. 8
(currently the Hanser 80) has an easement to it which was granted
in 2000. There is also a small 1-acre parcel in the NWNWNW corner
of sec. 8 between Grassy Lakes. All of these parcels would are
recommended for land acquisition.
4. Unique, Natural Features: The Manistee River marks the south
boundary of this compartment. Potential for wood turtle and
massasauga along Manistee River. Potential for Goshawk and Red
Shouldered Hawk.
For Michigan's Natural Features Inventory data click on the
adjacent link MNFI 2003.doc
5. Historical Features: High Rollaways Overlook
6. Special Management Considerations: This compartment contains an old
growth corridor along the Manistee River. The SE of sec. 7 contains
an ORV Restoration site developed about 1998. It appears to be
holding with some minor illegal use of ORV. Compartment has wide
spread illegal ORV use, primarily from full size trucks, along the
riverbanks and bluffs on old two tracks and hill climbs. A

Director Order closing a large portion of the compartment to
wheeled motorized use is in effect. A vehicle access plan for the
overlook and compartment is being implemented in the coming year
should help address some of these concerns. A substantial erosion
site (stand 126) is being proposed for rehab work in conjunction
with the Resource Conservation Alliance under a 319 Grant in the
next few years. A fence trespass is being resolved in S1/2NE
section 12.
7. Recreational Facilities & Opportunities: High Rollaways Overlook, a
very popular scenic site is located in this compartment.
Considerable improvements such as a viewing deck, parking area and
pathway have been installed. Addition work is schedule for the
summer of 2002, which will complete the project. There is a Park
and Recreation Division river access site located in stand 128 that
allows vehicle boat access to the Manistee River. The Baxter
Bridge State Forest Campground is located across the 29 1/2-Mile
Road from the access site in the adjacent compartment 150.
8. Watershed & Fisheries Considerations: The Manistee River flows
through Compartment 132. The Manistee River is a Designated Trout
Stream, and in this area supports popular sportfisheries for brown
trout, walleye, and northern pike. Brown trout are stocked by
MDNR. Due to Natural Rivers considerations, no cutting should take
place within 175’ of the Manistee River.
9. Priority Wildlife Species: Those wildlife species associated with
dry-mesic forested communities and riverine communities. (L.Smith
11/30/01)
10.
Habitat Objectives: This compartment is located within the
Highplains Ecosystem, Grayling Outwash Plain Subsection, LTA’s 5111
and 2221. Soils in this area are characterized by deep,
excessively drained sands. Historically, this area was composed of
northern hardwood forests of American beech and sugar maple or
mixed forests of red pine/white pine, beech and red maple. Forests
of beech and hemlock were also extensive. Presently, the area is
composed of mixed dry-conifer, dry hardwoods, and aspen. The
Manistee River runs along the south boundary of the compartment.
The river valley is utilized as a travel corridor for numerous
wildlife species and is an important deer wintering area. Wildlife
habitat objectives are to continue to maintain species and ageclass diversity across the compartment and to continue to manage
the Manistee River corridor for the maximum diversity of wildlife
species. (L.Smith 11/30/01)
11.
Oil & Gas Facilities--Concerns/Restrictions: No development
currently. Most of this compartment would probably be poorly
suited to oil and gas development given its proximity to the river,
areas of steep terrain and areas of old growth.
12.
Mineral Management Objectives: Surface sediments consist of
glacial outwash sand and gravel and post-glacial alluvium and end
moraine of coarse-textured till. Glacial drift thickness varies

between 200 and 600 feet. There is over 300 feet of relief within
the compartment. Beneath the Glacial Drift are the Mississippian
Coldwater Shale and the Marshall Sandstone. The Marshall was
previously used as a building stone. A old gravel pit is located
in Sec. 18. Gravel potential is good, especially the upland area.
There is also an old pit in section in section 7. Neither pit has
been active in the last twenty years and are considered abandon.
This area lies 4 miles southeast of the prolific Silurian Niagaran
reef trend. There does not appear to be any potential for Niagaran
reefs in this area. This area is not currently leased for oil and
gas and potential appears limited. Part of the compartment. Is
surface only.
13. Roads & Bridges: We have a State Easement on the two-track passing
over private lands in sec. 7, the N ½ of the NE.
A forest road access plan is detailed on the compartment map.
Identified are state and county roads as well as forest roads and
trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR. Also indicated are
forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR that are
proposed for abandonment. These roads have been determined to be
in excess of our access needs, are a threat to the resources, or
are a concern environmentally.
Proposed new roads or roads recommended for substantial
improvement are noted below:

Survey Needs: None critical
