GAYLORD FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT: 168 ENTRY YEAR: 2011 Compartment Acreage: 2,893 County: CHEBOYGAN Revision Date: 06/03/2009 Stand Examiner: DANIEL HECKMAN Legal Description: T35N R02W Sec. 19-21, 28-32 Management Goals: To provide for the protection, integrated management and responsible use of a healthy, productive and undiminished forest resource base for the social, recreational, environmental and economic benefit of the State of Michigan. Soil and Topography: This compartment is very flat with limited changes in topography. Dominant soil types are excessively drained Rubicon and Grayling Sands. These very dry, sandy soils formed on outwash plains. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: State ownership is fairly contiguous with surrounding private property being broken into small private parcels. The area is prone to illegal trash dumping because it’s the nearest state land to Indian River. The Adopt-aForest program coordinator has been contacted to help organize a clean-up effort. The Lakehead Pipe line travels through this compartment. Unique, Natural Features: Hill’s Thistle, Bald Eagle, Common Loon Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None known. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: This compartment straddles the Pigeon River and Sturgeon River watersheds, and contains portions of the Little Sturgeon River, and all of Cochran and Roberts Lakes. A 300-foot buffer should be kept adjacent to the Little Sturgeon River, and a standard 100-foot buffer should be maintained around Cochran and Roberts Lakes. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This large compartment lies both SE and NE of Indian River and consists mainly of upland habitat, with the exception of the swamp in the NW part of the compartment, the riparian corridor in the SE part along a tributary of the Little Sturgeon river, and the surrounding areas around Roberts and Cochran Lakes. Roberts and Cochran lakes have seasonal waterfowl use and eagles frequent the area. Oak is a very important component of the habitat in the northern part of this compartment and all treatments will have scattered large crowned oak left for hard mast production. Stands 11, 18, 42, 71, part of 83 and 99, 93, and 95 are going to be treated to maintain early successional habitat and encourage oak reproduction. Stands 54 and 69 are going to be harvested and burned to encourage natural jack pine/oak reproduction along with scattered oak/pine barren areas. This compartment receives a considerable amount of hunting pressure due to its abundance of game species and its proximity to Indian River. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and dune sand. The glacial drift thickness varies between 50 and 200 feet. The Devonian Traverse Group subcrops below the glacial drift. The Traverse is used for stone and cement products. Gravel pits are located in Section 20 and there is potential on the uplands. Most of this Compartment was recently leased. The nearest oil and gas production, the Antrim Shale gas play, is located 5 miles to the south. The Antrim Shale is absent in this area and there is no known oil and gas potential. Vehicle Access: Access is good throughout the compartment. Survey Needs: 4 of the proposed treatments bound private property. Some survey assistance may be needed. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: This compartment has the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail (MCCCT) running through section 30 and 31. There is a boating access site on Cochran Lake in section 21. Fire Protection: Additional Compartment Information: ¾ The following 3 reports from the IFMAP Inventory System are attached: ♦ Cover Type by Age Class ♦ Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors ♦ Unit Compartment: 168 DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Page 1 of 1 * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area Conservation Area Type HCVA Natural Rivers There are two Natural Rivers datasets which are derived from spatial buffers set from an established and approved distance from the river centerlines. The Natural Rivers Zoning District is a 400 foot buffer for most Natural Rivers. The Vegetative Buffer ranges from 25 to 100 feet. To view specific Zoning Districts and Vegetative Buffers for each Natural River see the table located on the I:\Documentation\GDSE data folder. SCA Archaeological Site An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available. SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210. SCA Concentrated Recreation Area Facilities that are designed and maintained for routine or heavy recreational use, including State Parks, State Forest campgrounds, motorized and non-motorized trails, trailheads, staging areas and public access sites. SCA Potential Old Growth Areas This category contains stands were identified for a broad range of reasons and were coded in the OI database as stand condition 8 as potential old growth (POG). Approximately 310,000 acres have been identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry 2008 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: 1) vetted through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process.
