Compartment Review Presentation
Compartment 221
Entry Year: 2009
Compartment Acreage: 1084 County: Marquette
Revision Date: March 24, 2009
Stand Examiner: Thomas Seablom
Legal Description: T46N R28W Sec. 16, 17 and 18
RMU (if applicable): None
Management Goals: Management goals include maintaining and increasing timber production and
maintaining both wildlife habitat and water quality. Timber production will focus on fiber production with
sawtimber being a minor component, occurring on the more productive sites. Managing as such will provide
both cover and feed for wildlife.
Soil and Topography: This compartment is generally level to gently rolling. It is on the northern fringe of
a larger sandy outwash plain. Soils are predominately sands and mucks. The marsh complex within this
area is made up of the Greenwood and Dawson soil mapping unit while the uplands are Pence fine sandy
loam and to a lesser degree Rubicon sand and the Rubicon-Ishpeming-Rock outcrop complex.
Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Ownership is
primarily State and private individuals with some timber company land in the area. Development is in both
primary residency and camps. The majority of the primary residences are to the east of the compartment
along the Co. Rd. 581 corridor. Land use is a mix of timber management and recreation.
Unique, Natural Features: None
Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None
Special Management Designations or Considerations: Stands along the Black River and West Branch
Creek are listed as Special Conservation Areas (SCA) for Potential Old Growth (POG).
Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Both the Black River and West Branch Creek are tributaries to
the Middle Branch Escanaba River.
Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Text
Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of coarsetextured till, glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies
between 10 and 50 feet. The Precambrian Archean Granite/Gneiss subcrops below the glacial drift. This rock
could be used as a dimension stone. Gravel pits are located in the area and there could be some potential. The
abandoned Republic iron mine is located three miles to the west. Sections 21 and 29 are currently leased for
metallic exploration. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP.
Vehicle Access: Vehicle access is good. County roads lead to the compartment and secondary roads are
networked throughout the remainder of the compartment. An easement to the north of section 17 exists to
access the northwest portion of the compartment.
Survey Needs: None
Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: No facilities exist and there are no opportunities.
Fire Protection: This compartment is on the northern fringe of a sandy outwash plain that is predominantly
jack pine and is within the boundary of the South Ishpeming-581 Zone dispatch. Access for fire equipment
to this compartment and area is good. The most western edge of this compartment and immediately to the
west access becomes more difficult as the vegetation is predominantly marsh and granite outcrop islands.
The jack pine in this compartment and surrounding area is fairly young, 0-30 years, with relatively little
mature timber.
Additional Compartment Information: None

natural regeneration
Fmd : A clearcut is being prescribed for this stand. All trees except red and white pine and white birch are to be cut. This will be the only
retention for this stand. Site will be anchor chained following completion of harvest to regenerate jack pine. Scarifying in this manner
will also aid in the regeneration of spruce and fir. There is a seed source for these species on the southern edge of the stand. SEE
LOCKED COMMENTS.

Fmd : 4/7/2009: Stand will be clearcut and converted to fir. All trees except red and white pine and those spruce with less than a 6-inch stump
diamter will be cut. Regeneration of pine and spruce-fir will be protected. A summer harvest will be required to obtain scarification.
(1999) Cut in 1993-94 by Oscar Antilla, permit #21-91, Black River Block. Marked red and white pine were cut as well as all
merchantable aspen and birch, jack pine with 2 or more sticks, and spruce/fir with 3 or more sticks. After the windstorm of July 21,
2002, a salvage cut was made by Holli Forest Products in the fall of 2002, timbersale #101-03-02 (scaled sale) to cut all broken, downed
and uprooted trees.

Fmd : Clearcut this stand cutting all trees greater than 2-inches dbh except any red or white pine that may be present. This stand was salvaged
after the windstorm of July 21, 2002 and has varying degrees of density. There is a heavy spruce-fir understory located in some areas of
the stand. Upon completion of harvesting the site will be planted to jack pine. Where possible, trenching should go around pockets of
regenerating aspen and spruce/fir.

DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS

* This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment.
Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located.

Description
ERA = Ecological Reference Area
HCVA = High Conservation Value Area
SCA = Special Conservation Area
Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or
stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year
to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of
groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as
trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.
Potential Old
Growth Areas
This category contains stands were identified for a broad range of reasons and were coded in the OI
database as stand condition 8 as potential old growth (POG). Approximately 310,000 acres have been
identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry
2008 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: 1) vetted through
the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as
an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is
released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process.
