Compartment Review Presentation
Cadillac Forest Management Unit
Compartment 30
Entry Year 2015
Acreage: 2,477
County Osceola
Management Area: Evart Block
Revision Date:
Stand Examiner: Cheryl Nelson
Legal Description:
T18N, R09W, Sections 2-4, 10, 11
Identified Planning Goals:
Balance age-class distributions for aspen and regenerating oak.
Soil and topography:
Chelsea-Rubicon-Montcalm association (sands). Terrain is rolling and there are some steep hills within the compartment.
Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment:
The state ownership is in contiguous blocks. Sections 10 and 11 have large areas of private ownership.
Unique Natural Features:
Common loon just south of sections 4 and 11 and to the west and north/northeast. Blanding's turtle to south. Slippershell
mussel to southeast. Wood turtle to southeast. Potential for secretive locust and ebony boghaunter in bogs. Potential for
dusted skipper, grizzled skipper, and red-legged spittlebug in grassy openings.
Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features:
No Archeological, Historical, or Cultural Features known.
Special Management Designations or Considerations:
None.
Watershed and Fisheries Considerations:
Fisheries Division has no objection to the proposed 2015 YOE forest treatments for Compartment 30. (R. O'Neal,
8/23/2013).
Wildlife Habitat Considerations:
This compartment is located in the Highplains Ecosystem , Cadillac Subsection, LTA 1121. Soils in this area are
characterized by well-drained loamy sands The surrounding landscape is primarily forested with the exception of the areas
surrounding the community of Evart to the southeast. Historically, this area was composed of mesic forest types.
Presently, early serial stage northern and central hardwoods dominate the landscape, with a mixed pine component
present, mostly plantings. Regeneration of the oak component both within the aspen and northern hardwood types is a
concern for long term sustainability. Red maple and cherry generally regenerate well in heavily thinned stands. Wildlife
habitat objectives are to continue to manage for high structural diversity within stands and age class diversity across the
compartment, including early successional stands that benefit species such as ruffed grouse, and white tail deer. Down
and dead woody debris is a consideration for aspen and hardwood stands. (P. Kailing 8/19/13).
Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions
Surface sediments consist of an end moraine of coarse-textured till. The glacial drift thickness varies between 800 and
1,000 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Pennsylvanian Grand River and Saginaw Formations. The Saginaw is quarried
for clay/shale in other parts of the State. The nearest gravel pit is three miles to the southeast, but gravel potential is
considered to be good. The compartment lies two miles northwest of Evart Field. The field has produced over 3.8 million
BO from the Devonian Dundee Limestone and over 5 Bcf gas from the Stray sandstone. Several older shallow wells have
been drilled in this area without success. Section 2 is currently leased for oil and gas development and also nonmetallic
mineral potash exploration. (T. Hoane, 3/6/2013).
Vehicle Access:
A forest road access plan is detailed on the compartment map. Identified are state and county roads as well as forest
roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR. Also indicated are forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the
DNR that are proposed for closure. These roads were determined to be in excess of the access needs in the area, are a

threat to the resources, or are a concern environmentally.
Survey Needs:
None.
Recreational Facilities and Opportunities:
A 1/2 mile of the Evart Motorcycle Trail runs north/south along the Southwestern boundary of this compartment. The Evart
Motorcycle trail is designated by a directors order as a cycle trail only, therefore, efforts to keep the trail narrow are
encouraged. Providing for "leave trees" and protecting understory brush at locations where larger ORV's could enter the
cycle only trail are preferred management tools in this trail area. Trees harvested directly adjacent to the trail should be cut
flush to the ground to reduce accidents caused by stumps. Additional trail protection specifications should be considered
to reduce impacts to trail users, as well as serve as an example of how sound timber harvesting methods can co-exist, and
often improve recreation and wildlife experiences for future generations. Additional recreation activities include gathering of
berries, and mushrooms. (T.M.N. 7-8-13).
Fire Protection:
Very few fires have started in the compartment. Fuels during early season could cause a larger fire. Recreational
opportunities would be the main cause of any fire starts. Most of the unit has limited access with only a limited maintenance
county road crossing through. The remote location increases the likelihood of a wildfire going undetected for an extended
period of time. (B. Tower, 2013).

Riparian Area
10/04/2013 9:56:26 AM - Page 1 of 1
Description
ERA = Ecological Reference Area
HCVA = High Conservation Value Area
SCA = Special Conservation Area
A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem
influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes,
streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian
communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well
as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity.
