Compartment Review Presentation
Roscommon Forest Management Unit
Compartment 71085
Entry Year 2017
Acreage: 1,221
County Roscommon
Management Area: Houghton Lake Wetlands
Revision Date: 2015-08-05
Stand Examiner: Dale Ekdom
Legal Description:
: T23N, R2W Sections 28 & 29
Identified Planning Goals:
Vegetation management in the Houghton Lake Wetlands management area (MA) will provide forest products; maintain or
enhance wildlife habitat; protect areas of unique threatened, endangered and special concern species; and provide for
forest-based recreational uses. Timber management for this 10-year planning period will focus on balancing the aspen ageclass distribution. Wildlife habitat management objectives include perpetuating early-successional communities for species
adapted to young forests for hunting and other wildlife-related recreation opportunity. Expected trends within the next
decade are the need to continue to balance aspen age-class distributions, an expected increase in recreation pressure and
invasive species encroachment.
Soil and topography:
Terrain is mostly flat. Soils are Saugatuck and Rubicon sands with Rifle peat in the
lower and wetter areas.
Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment:
Solid state ownership within and surrounding the compartment.
Unique Natural Features:
Nine Mile Muskeg
Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features:
None known but some archaeological potential.
Special Management Designations or Considerations:
Compartment is bisected by I-75 and the portion west of the highway is within
the Backus State Game Area.
Watershed and Fisheries Considerations:
This compartment contains portions of the Little Mud Lake Flooding and the Backus Creek Flooding.
Wildlife Habitat Considerations:
This compartment is part of the proposed Backus GEMS Area.
Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions
Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies
between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Mississippian Michigan Formation and Bayport Limestone. The
Michigan is quarried for gypsum and the Bayport for limestone elsewhere in the state. Most of the good gravel pits in the
region are associated with upland areas. The Nine Mile and St. Helen/Carter pits are located in sections 17 and 22/23,
respectively, but potential within the compartment appears to be limited due to the abundance of wetlands. St. Helen Field
lies five miles to the northeast. The field has produced over 8.7 million bbls of oil and 14.7 Bcf gas from the Devonian
Richfield Member. It is in secondary recovery operations currently. All of the State land in the area is currently leased for oil
and gas development.
Vehicle Access:
The only vehicle access to the west side of the compartment is through the north Backus gate on E. Russell Lake Road.
Vehicle access to the east end of the compartment is via E. Russell Lake Road. Compartment is bisected by I-75. There
are no forest roads in the compartment east of I-75 due to the wet terrain.
Survey Needs:
08/13/2015 10:46:36 AM - Page 1 of 2
POLEYN
None necessary at this time.
Recreational Facilities and Opportunities:
This compartment is walk-in access only and is used primarily for deer, small game, and some waterfowl hunting.
Consider placement of retention pockets for best visual aesthetics for Interstate users. The compartment is surrounded by
public land; utilize timber management to curtail resource damages.
Fire Protection:
Fire suppression within this compartment should not be a problem due to the absence of fire prone cover-types and the
presence of numerous natural fire breaks. Access may be a problem if a fire does occur, due to the limited vehicle access
and low, wet terrain.
Additional Compartment Information:
Proposed treatments in this compartment include 22 acres of final harvests for aspen management, 32 aces of final
harvests in red pine, 2 acres of red pine thinning to promote turkey roosting and raptor nesting habitat, and 66 acres of
wildlife opening creation and maintenance. There will also be 9 acres of red pine final harvests, 3 acres of red pine
thinning, and 10 acres of opening maintenance in Compartment 86 to the south which will be included with the treatments
in this compartment.
The following reports from the Inventory are attached:

Reference Areas
Description
ERA = Ecological Reference Area
HCVA = High Conservation Value Area
SCA = Special Conservation Area
Ecological Reference Areas (ERAs) are high quality examples of natural communities that have been
identified as Element Occurrences (EOs) by the Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) within the
context of their natural community classification system. Element Occurrences with viability ranks of A
(Excellent) or B (Good) and a Global (G) or State (S) element (rarity) ranking of endangered (1),
threatened (2), or rare (3) serve as an initial base of ERAs. They may be located upon any ownership in
the State. The system is comprised of individual or associations of natural community types that are
managed for restoration and maintenance of natural ecological processes and values. The public may
submit recommendations for lands as ERAs using the DNR Conservation Area Recommendation Form.
