Identified Planning Goals:
To maintain and enhance forest health and diversity while incorporating recreational, wildlife, fire, and any additional
special concerns.
Soil and topography:
Rolling uplands of Rubicon sand with steep hills on the west end, and another ridgeline angling across the middle of
section(s) 16, 17.
Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment:
State-owned lands surround the compartment.
Unique Natural Features:
MNFI has identified the potential for goshawk, red-shouldered hawk, eagle, and osprey. Potential for moose and wolf.
Potential for pine drops or false violet in pines. Auricled twayblade to NW. American dune wild-rye to NE. Black crowberry
to N.
Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features:
None known at this time, although old logging grade remnants can be found throughout area.
Special Management Designations or Considerations:
Watershed and Fisheries Considerations:
Fisheries Values: None
Fisheries Concerns: This compartment contains no lakes or streams that would contain any fish communities.
Wildlife Habitat Considerations:
Compartment 13 lies in the far northern portion of Luce county and is in the Grand Marais Sandy End Moraine and
Outwash ecological sub-subsection. The compartment is in the Deer Park Management Area and has American marten,
Piping plover, Kirtland’s warbler and red crossbill as featured species. The vegetation is primarily red, white, and jack pine
with a few stands of aspen and birch scattered throughout the compartment. Stands have a nice diversity of tree species.
Overall, pre-settlement vegetation patterns appear to have been similar to the current landscape of this compartment.
In a predominantly pine forested ecosystem, maintaining a variety of age and size classes and maintaining as much
structural diversity as possible in managed stands will be important to achieving wildlife objectives. For example, retaining
soft and hard mast producing species will provide food sources, nest and den trees, and improve stand diversity.
Maintaining habitat connectivity between stands of mature timber will be important for marten and other species. Wildlife
species potentially using this compartment include white-tailed deer, black bear, spruce grouse, ruffed grouse, snowshoe
hare, gray wolves, coyote and fox.
Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions
Sections 16 – 18 & 21, T49N-R11W, Luce County.
Surface sediments consist of lacustrine sand and gravel. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness.
The Cambrian Munising Group and Precambrian Jacobsville Sandstone subcrop below the glacial drift. The Jacobsville
has been used as a building stone in the past. Gravel pits are not located in the area, but there may be some potential.
There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP.
Vehicle Access:
From Newberry, follow M-123 north to Co Rd 407. Follow Co Rd 407 ~ 19 miles north to Co Rd 410. Go west on Co Rd

410 for ~ 3.5 miles to N/S fire lane which will lead you into the SE corner of the compartment. Interior compartment roads
are mainly poor sand two-tracks.
Survey Needs:
None
Recreational Facilities and Opportunities:
The Pine Ridge ORV trail runs throughout the compartment. Blueberry picking in the late summer, deer hunting.
Fire Protection:
Fire lane road breaks are in place along section lines. The compartment is a part of the Two Hearted Zone Dispatch area.
Very large fire runs are not expected because of the many stands of different conifer species, age classes and densities.
Mostly dry sandy soils over much of the area should allow normal fire suppression efforts to be successful.
