Many international industry and regulatory representatives were in attendance. Most participants were from France. Staff presented on the NRC’s license renewal process (ML14091A044). Following the conference sessions, on March 21, the staff toured the Materials Ageing Institute (MAI) near Paris, France. MAI performs research to support long-term operations, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is one of the sponsors of the research to support activities in the United States. Public Meeting with Pressurized-Water Reactor Owners Group On In-Vessel Debris Limits On April 1, 2014, the staff held a public meeting with the Pressurized-Water Reactor Owners Group (PWROG) to discuss its thermal hydraulics analyses that will be used to establish new in-vessel debris limits. The analyses presented at this meeting focus on hot leg break scenarios to show that alternate flow paths in the reactor vessel provide sufficient flow for core cooling. The PWROG also discussed its proposed follow-on modeling and testing. Staff participated in discussions and provided feedback. In particular, the staff questioned the impact of new flow patterns in the core. The Owners Group will return for additional presentations on other aspects of this topic on April 16. Pre-licensing Public Meeting with Arizona Public Service Company On April 2, 2014, representatives of the Arizona Public Service Company held a pre-licensing public meeting with the staff to discuss the licensee’s plans to submit a relief request to extend the reactor vessel bottom-mounted instrument (BMI) nozzle penetration #3 repair at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 3, through the end of its renewed facility operating license.
