Classification of Living Things Notes Taxonomy – the science of naming, describing, and classifying organisms Carolus Linnaeus (1700s) o Classified organisms into 2 kingdoms o Developed binomial nomenclature Systematics (modern classification) o Uses many kinds of evidence (cell type, structure, DNA, habitat, etc.) to classify o Starts with Domains Binomial Nomenclature (scientific names) o Two-name naming system o Genus and species Genus = group of similar species Species = group of organisms that have similar traits and are able to interbeed and produce fertile offspring Scientific Names o Same everywhere! o Avoids confusion
