News Release Rick Snyder, Governor Steve Arwood, Director Stephanie Comai, Deputy Director Martha Yoder, MIOSHA Director Contact: Andrea Miller 517.373.9280 www.michigan.gov/lara Email: [email protected] MIOSHA and the Associated General Contractor of Michigan Sign Alliance to Protect Workers February 14, 2014 - The Associated General Contractor of Michigan (AGC) and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) signed a formal alliance today to provide training opportunities to help participants recognize construction hazards and learn how to solve jobsite problems in a safe and productive manner. MIOSHA is part of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). "We are pleased to join with the AGC to protect our working men and women," said MIOSHA Director Martha Yoder. "This alliance offers great opportunities to share best practices, to provide unique training opportunities and to help create safer and healthier workplaces throughout Michigan." The Alliance formalizes a working relationship between AGC and MIOSHA to provide enhanced awareness of worker safety and health of members through banners, promotion of training opportunities, and allowing access to member sites for the Consultation Education & Training (CET) Division to conduct job site safety and health consultation visits. This Alliance will promote regular and unscheduled CET safety and health consultation visits, as CET staff is available. Signing the alliance was: Chairman of the AGC, Burt Pearson and MIOSHA Director, Martha Yoder. The purpose of this Alliance is to increase worker awareness and safety and health protection on AGC member worksites. The intention is to solicit AGC membership to voluntarily participate in the alliance. Each member who participates will be placed on a list to allow MIOSHA CET consultants to conduct a safety and health consultation visits. Participating contractors will have an “open-door” policy for CET staff to conduct a consultation. The key goals of this alliance include: Outreach and Communication o AGC will solicit 10 members to voluntarily participate in the alliance job site visits. o Participating contractors will announce their participation in the alliance by posting a banner at the job site. o A minimum of 10 promotional announcements will be made to promote the alliance through newsletters and website. Training and Education: o After the CET safety and health consultation visits: Members will be provided with instruction and material on how to develop and implement an accident prevention program. Members will receive information on how to comply with MIOSHA rules and regulations. . Members will receive written documentation of specific hazards noted during the job site visit and agree to correct all serious hazards. o Each participating contractor will advertise and promote off site training opportunities such as: Michigan Construction Safety Training Day Event MIOSHA 10-Hour Classes for Construction Michigan Safety Conference MIOSHA Training Institute Certification Programs Each participating contractor will provide special on site safety training, such as the Construction Safety Training Support Program, as conducted by AGC. o Each participating contractor will ensure that all project contractors have a written o Accident prevention program at the job site and a designated safety administrator. o Each participating contractor will have a job site bulletin board listing their safety personnel and the safety personnel of the other job site contractors. o Co-sponsorship with the CET Division on workshops and seminars will be ongoing. Promoting Dialogue: o The AGC of Michigan will advertise the alliance on their website and in other publications. o Each participating job site will promote the safety and health alliance via a banner announcement. o The AGC of Michigan will promote the alliance by providing news articles for the MIOSHA newsletter. Alliances enable organizations committed to workplace safety and health to collaborate with MIOSHA to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. Alliances are open to all groups, including: trade or professional associations, businesses, labor organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies. There are many benefits to participating in an alliance with MIOSHA. Through this program, organizations will: Build trusting, cooperative relationships. Network with others committed to workplace safety and health. Exchange information about best practices. Leverage resources to maximize worker safety and health protection. "The MIOSHA program is dedicated to working with employers, both public and private sector - to find innovative ways to enhance workplace safety and health," said Yoder. "Through alliances, MIOSHA can offer employers a voluntary, cooperative relationship to eliminate serious hazards and achieve a high level of safety and health."
