Overview
Testing Planned
•Debris Interceptor fiber capture testing has been performed for one
of two high fiber plants, further testing is planned during the summer
of 2007.
•Sector and module head loss testing, including chemical effects
(“Integrated Chemical Effects Testing”), is expected for all licensees
in 2007.
•Fiber-only bypass testing will be performed to determine fiber
bypass quantities. Conditions will be optimized for maximum fiber
bypass, ie, gradual fiber addition.
•Reactor Fuel-grid head loss testing has been performed; no
additional tests are currently scheduled.

Debris Interceptor
Fiber Capture Testing
•Section of debris interceptor (DI)
tested in flume at typical plant DI
approach velocities and water
depth.
Debris Interceptor
Direction of Flow
•Fiber-only tests allow observation
of debris bed formation; no
significant effect was observed from
the inclusion of particulates in the
test flume.
•Bioshield mock-up testing
conducted in large (18’ diameter)
test pool for fiber distribution
measurement (also fiber-only).

Chemical Effects
Integrated Testing
•Plant-specific information used to determine chemical precipitant
inventory in containment per WCAP-16530 report.
•Some GE strainer licensees will use a reduced plant chemical
effects inventory based on testing performed by Alion that indicates
significantly reduced aluminum precipitants as compared to WCAP16530 predictions.
•GE performs integrated testing using a test sector and module with
particulate and fiber debris loads and chemical precipitants prepared
at the test site.
•Chemical precipitants are introduced after particulate and fiber, in
that respective order.

Sector and Module
Head Loss Testing
•Most head loss tests are performed in a well-agitated test tank where
debris settling is prevented to greatest extent possible using an array of
mechanical agitators.
•In cases where near-field settling is allowed to occur, the area surrounding
the plant strainers and the surrounding pool velocities are simulated in the
test tank.
•Debris loads include fibrous insulation,
particulate and chemical precipitants.
•Combination of sector and module
testing is used for each plant.

Sector and Module
Head Loss Testing
•Several licensees are pursuing a reduced Nukon ZOI based on mixed-phase jet
impingement testing performed at Wyle Labs, and most licensees are using a 4D
ZOI for qualified coatings.
•Cal-Sil banding is used by multiple licensees to reduce Cal-Sil debris inventory.
•A range of fibrous debris loads are tested with maximum particulate debris in a
search for bounding head loss condition.
•Highest head loss is not always seen at maximum fibrous debris volume or at the
1/8th inch “classic case” thin-bed condition. Therefore, GE testing methodology
includes a systematic search for peak head loss between zero fiber and maximum
fiber load.
•Test repeatability will be addressed.

Status of Testing
•Testing is incomplete for all GE PWR strainer licensees.
•Chemical effects have yet to be addressed for most GE PWR strainer
licensees.
•Testing will continue throughout 2007.
