SALEM
AN INTERNATIONAL CITY
As City of Salem Mayor Anna M. Peterson visits neighborhoods across Salem, one
feature she treasures is the variety of races and cultures with which she interacts. Mayor
Peterson launched the Mayor’s International Council, which celebrates the diversity of
races and cultures here in the City of Salem.
About 72 languages are spoken in the homes of the Salem-Keizer School District. At
least 22 distinct races are identified in the U.S. Census for Salem residents. Salem is
home to at least 25 cultural community hubs of all types. Even more live, work, or
play in Salem than are represented in these statistics.
