RECOMMENDATION: Information only. SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND: Authorized in 2013 by the Salem City Council, the Mayor’s International Council works to raise awareness of the international qualities of Salem. The purpose of the Council is to recognize, celebrate and promote the diverse and international culture of the city of Salem. The Council highlights positive contributions in the area of cultural and international relations in Salem. The Council: a. Recognizes residents and organizations that make the city of Salem a member of the global community. b. Promotes cultural awareness and understanding for the enrichment of the community. c. Indirectly assists in attracting international businesses that value an intercultural community. d. Acknowledges and appreciates the value of diversity. The Mayor’s International Council created a report to identify the cultural communities represented in Salem. The report provides information about the number and types of cultural organizations and the number of nationalities represented in Salem. Peterson visits neighborhoods across Salem, one feature she treasures is the variety of races and cultures with which she interacts. Mayor Peterson launched the Mayor’s International Council, which celebrates the diversity of races and cultures here in the City of Salem. About 72 languages are spoken in the homes of the Salem-Keizer School District. At least 22 distinct races are identified in the U.S. Census for Salem residents. Salem is home to at least 25 cultural community hubs of all types. Even more live, work, or play in Salem than are represented in these statistics. Did you know? Over 100 Sikh families live in Salem!
