Community and Partners of East Salem (CaPES)
Community and Partners of East Salem (CaPES) formerly the East Lancaster Neighborhood Area Partnership PARTNERS INCLUDE N e i g h b o rs R enters Schools Businesses Nonprofits Community Groups & anyone interested in the livability of the neighborhood area The East Lancaster Neighborhood Area Partnership has become Community and Partners of East Salem (CaPES), expanding their focus from East Lancaster to include any neighborhood with a school that feeds to McKay High School. In addition to providing support to the neighborhood associations, the City collaborates with two neighborhood areas focusing on community building through the Neighborhood Partnership Program. Applications are available each year for anyone with an idea on how to make a difference in their part of Salem. Proposals are scored based upon demonstrated neighborhood need, goals and readiness of partners to work with the City in addressing them. In 2011, the East Lancaster Neighborhood Area was selected as the first Rotating Partnership. Neighbors and partners spent two years organizing free activities for kids, some with nearly 600 in attendance, and supporting various opportunities for neighbors to connect, share resources and beautify the area. Partners applied for and were granted a second term of Partnership Support (2013-2014). Also in 2013, CaPES completed an operational document in order to move into a collaborative relationship with Salem Leadership Foundation that has already increased capacity to connect neighbors and strengthen East Salem Neighborhoods. When Lansing’s two years of Partnership support ended in December 2013, a number of Lansing partners decided to become involved in CaPES as well. Meetings Community and Partners of East Salem meets on 3rd Thursdays of each month from 11 to 12:30 at different East Salem partner locations. All who care about neighborhoods in the McKay High School area are welcome to participate. Anyone who lives, works or owns property in Salem is a member of a Neighborhood Association. Collaborative Efforts Have Included: In addition to earlier efforts, the group supported North Lancaster Neighbors with the Brown Road Community Garden (a previously undeveloped park), helped out with a free soccer after-school program that now serves five elementary schools in East Salem, and supported McKay students with their own projects as well as connecting students with volunteer opportunities in the community. The group changed their name to CaPES and is open to supporting any neighborhoods with schools that feed to McKay High School. activities for kids neighborhood celebrations Questions, Comments or Ideas?
