Salem Civic Center Design: J. Lundy IARC 584 Professor: L. Zimmer Isometeric Open Offices Fall 2010 Design Concept The design concept for the Public Works department is a concept for the typical department in the new Salem Civic Center. The main focus here is to allow more natural light throughout the building. The closed offices, conference rooms, and service spaces are in the core of the building. The entire space around the exterior wall is open office systems furniture, with low panels and glazing. Most closed areas also include clerestory windows to let the natural light continue through the space. The layout is based on the idea of “neighborhoods” of each department. Every department has a local manager in a closed office, a city of workstations, and neighborhood park in the form of a community meeting area. Print and coffee services are also centally located within each neighborhood with the idea of bringing people into the center to casually bump into each other. The workstation design is a standard cubicle that can be customized and upgraded as a person moves up the heirarchy. Most workers within the Public Works department will get low panelled workstations to allow collaboration. Engineers are in more private cubicles with heigher panels. The metal runners in each station allow for data and electrical hookups as well as customizable hanging storage. Public Works Floor plan neighborhoods Cedar reuse - To take advantage of the quality and quantity of cedar panels in the existing open office, the panels will be reused in three distinct loations. 1. Custom reception desk 2. Copy/Print stations 3. Office door accent This will utilize the cedar in locations that are other than the current open office so that workers will get a break from the panels. Systems Furniture: The furniture selected for this proposal will be the Knoll Currents open office system. Connected. Mobile. Universal. This system includes technology managment and comprehensive offmodule planning flexibility. Task chairs will be supplied by Steelcase. The Leap Chair is a prizewinning ergonomic solution to office work.
