The central challenge of wiring harness technology lies in designing cost-effective techniques for rapidly and accurately assembling these connections. Developing new technologies and understanding efficient design principals have enabled Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems to design, develop, and manufacture products the automotive industry wants. SEWS is an automobile maker’s onestop-shop for electrical distribution systems, not just components and parts. First, we listen to our customers. We take the time to understand their vision, requirements and specifications – cost, size, performance, quality, and time to market. Then, we use our research and engineering know-how to develop solutions that are not only innovative, but also affordable. Most importantly, we draw upon our systems expertise to streamline the entire product development process, from concept to prototype to manufacturing and delivery. Our Products Superior technologies and product quality is what we offer. It sets our product line apart from the competition. Our products include: • Wiring Harnesses • Pipe Harnesses for Hybrid Vehicles • Electric Wire •Connectors •Terminals • Center Panels • Junction Blocks • Electronic Control Units 4 Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc. Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems designs and manufactures the highest quality and most reliable wiring harness products for the automotive industry. What Is A Wiring Harness? Why Call It “Harness”? Wiring harnesses are SEWS’ main product. But indeed, what does the word “harness” mean? An answer can be found by looking to the world of horseback riding. The bridle and reins used in controlling the horse have long been referred to as the “harness”. Our harnesses communicate the driver’s actions, such as starting off and braking, to the various parts involved. Considering these roles, the use of this term is easily understood. 6 A wiring harness is an organized set of wires, terminals and connectors that run throughout the entire vehicle and relay information and electric power, thereby playing a critical role in “connecting” a variety of components. Power and information travel through this network much like the circulatory and central nervous systems of the human body. As cars continue to provide advanced functions, their component parts increasingly require electronics to save space and meet other requirements. Experts at efficient design and configuring complex circuits, SEWS creates wiring harnesses that contribute tremendously to the development and advancement of car manufacturers around the world. Wiring Harness Components A close look at a typical wiring harness will reveal a network of electric wires, connectors, terminals, clamps, tape, convoluted tubes, and sheaths. Electric Wire for Automobiles Wiring harnesses consist of various wires bundled together, with each individual wire responsible for carrying the electric signals and energy used in starting the engine, lights, meters, navigation systems, power windows and doors, and other devices in the vehicle. There are many different types of wire used in a wiring harness. Some varieties are more flexible, more heat resistant or more cold resistant, and others can be smaller for easier routing or larger for products requiring more current. Not only does SEWS use these various wires in the construction of wiring harnesses, but we also manufacture the wire we use. This is another important factor in helping us ensure the very best quality in all of our wiring harness products. Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc. Connectors In their role of connecting wires and cables within an automobile, connectors must function in environments with extreme temperature variations, vibrations, water, electromagnetic interference, and other conditions. With the increased use of information technology, we have developed a variety of connectors and other components that connect wires to GPS, TV, and other wave receiving devices in today’s automobiles. Terminals Terminals are the cur rent- car r ying connection points between the wires and the features in the automobile. Made of a variety of metals, these parts can be coated differently to meet a number of conditions. One manifestation of this can be seen in our products for the electric and hybrid vehicles. We offer a line of original products to meet our customers’ needs. Pipe Harnesses for Hybrid Vehicles Pipe harnesses for hybrid vehicles must be resistant to the high temperatures and electromagnetic noise produced with high voltages and electric currents. Along with solutions to these technical challenges, we are also developing features that protect the harnesses from various forms of shock. Motor Cables for Hybrid Vehicles This high-voltage cable connects the inverter with the motor. It is designed to withstand voltages exceeding 200 volts as well as currents far higher than seen in gasoline-powered vehicles. EV/HEV/PHEV An EV (Electric Vehicle) is an “electrically-powered vehicle” driven solely by an electric motor. Junction Blocks for High Voltage This product centralizes the junctions for circuits sending high-voltage, highcurrent power to the hybrid vehicle’s systems and places them all in one box. While functioning as a central connection for these circuits, it also includes relays, current sensors, and other related components. An HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a car that is powered by an internal combustion engine as well as a electric motor. It is also called a “hybrid vehicle”. A PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a hybrid vehicle whose battery can be charged by plugging into a home or another available power supply. 8 Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc. Electronic Components That Command Vehicle Functions While naturally functioning as a means of transport, more recently cars have come to include navigation systems as well as audio and other entertainment functions. We are actively developing a variety of electronic components required for car electronics, with many superior products to choose from. Electronic Components Cover More Tasks Electronic components now digitally control many vehicle operations. Use of electronics in core vehicle systems, including the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, and steering, also continues to grow. This is leading to a need for ever more compact electrical parts and more efficient assemblies. We at SEWS are developing products that integrate a number of components with combined functions, vastly reducing the number of parts and thus helping reduce size and weight. Junction Blocks Center Panels Containing relays, fuses, and other components, this unit centralizes connections for the vehicles’ electrical circuits and thus supports the overall control of the electronics. The center panel is the central interface between man and machine, providing comfort and information with the touch of a button. These components control temperature, fan speeds, navigation systems, hazard-detecting sonar indicators, and more. Electronics Control Units This unit, which controls the vehicle’s onboard devices, can be likened to a control tower or the vehicle’s brain. This integrated component also enables smart entry systems, doing away with the need for any key. Beneath the Hood & Throughout A COMPLETE GLOBAL SUPPLIER SEWS is a strategic link in the Sumitomo chain of developing and supplying complete electrical and electronics systems, from the wiring harness and harness components to the modular products that integrate and add function to these systems. 9 10 Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc.
