The Infrastructure, applications and the data itself have gone through major changes in the past decade. Despite these changes, the underlying data management tool — the relational database and the infrastructure supporting it has remained the same. Organizations are considering alternatives as the legacy databases were not designed to cope with the scale and agility challenges that face modern applications and data, nor were they built to take advantage of commodity storage and processing power available today. The technical motivation was the need to handle new, multi-structured data types or scale beyond the capacity constraints of existing systems — while in other cases the motivation was to identify viable alternatives to expensive RDBMS database infrastructures that also required highly trained DBAs. Popular vendors for NoSQL databases include MongoDB and Cassandra that were developed in response to the above limitations. They are high-performing, scalable databases designed for a broad array of modern applications and data types. Organizations of all sizes use it to power on-line, operational applications where low latency, high throughput and continuous availability are critical requirements of the system. EMC® ScaleIO® has validated these two vendors and offers a NoSQL solution based on its software defined storage architecture where customers transform their next generation business applications and database infrastructures to create a differentiated business model. SCALEIO PRODUCT OVERVIEW Autonomous management of performance hot spots and data layout EMC ScaleIO’s unique scale-out architecture aligns with the linear on-demand growth • Tow copy mesh mirroring technique for data protection improve CPU utilization, offer improved storage efficiencies, and the ability to scale • Always-on thin provisioning and snapshot capabilities • Auto-rebuild and rebalance of nodes across clusters • • Background scanning of disks to prevent data corruption of MongoDB and Cassandra workloads, all while helping maintain consistent low application latency. Further, running NoSQL applications on ScaleIO can remarkably compute and storage independently when compared to Direct Attached Storage (DAS) deployments; all of which drives towards DBA, DevOps productivity, faster time to market and low overall TCO. ScaleIO for NoSQL delivers five major benefits: Petabyte Scale and Capacity: NoSQL architectures are built for scale. However, when leveraging a traditional DAS platform, managing a large scale environment can be challenging. Alternatively, ScaleIO is a great fit as it can scale compute and performance resources linearly or independently to support NoSQL requirements – all the way from a three server configuration to over a thousand servers. Enterprise-Class Availability and Resiliency: NoSQL environments are increasingly mission critical and require 99.999% availability. New nodes can be added or removed from a cluster to support the business with near zero impact to downtime or application SLAs. ScaleIO can also easily move sharded database content SOLUTION OVERVIEW improving volume mobility. Further, it increases infrastructure resiliency and faster recovery of the database by preventing unnecessary node removal for simple disk failures. Consistent Performance: NoSQL solutions and ScaleIO work in unison to deliver the consistent IOPS in meeting next generation application needs. When rebuilds and rebalances are needed, performance optimization and tiering is automatic resulting in no impact to critical database workloads and SLAs. Innovative cashing mechanisms improve database performance and I/O efficiency under certain I/O profiles. DBA productivity: With ScaleIO’s snapshot feature, DBAs can be comforted in knowing that they can take and create a crash consistent copy of a distributed database in minutes without any disruption to performance or SLAs. The snaps are used for roll-back purposes i,e testing, validation, and pre-upgrades). Further, the two copy mesh mirroring technique is simple and tuned for database performance to rebuild missing data ensuring efficient redundancy. Converged Operations AND Low TCO: ScaleIO as a converged deployment consolidates all NoSQL applications and clusters on to a single platform avoiding storage silos, driving storage efficiencies, and giving visibility of storage resources across the datacenter. Agility, seamless management, broader virtualization footprint, automation, support for multiple storage media, operating systems and hypervisors; all contribute to a lowered TCO. Figure 1.
