ADVANCED VMWARE COPY MANAGEMENT WITH EMC APPSYNC SIMPLE, SLA-DRIVEN, SELF-SERVICE FOR VIRTUAL
ADVANCED VMWARE COPY MANAGEMENT WITH EMC APPSYNC The Benefits of EMC AppSync include: • SLA-driven to meet your business RPOs • Simplified Protection and Recovery • SIMPLE, SLA-DRIVEN, SELF-SERVICE FOR VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS EMC AppSync is advanced copy management software for EMC VNX and VMAX storage platforms that offers a better way to manage the protection and replication of VMware datastores on block and file storage. After defining service plans (i.e. Gold, Silver, Bronze), VMware administrators can protect and recover their own data quickly using EMC replication technologies (such as VNX Advanced Snapshots, SRDF, TimeFinder, Rep V2, and RecoverPoint). AppSync also provides a protection monitoring and reporting service that generates alerts if SLAs are not being met and if a replication job fails. Self-Service - Additionally, AppSync has a roles-based permissions and access system, and can be connected to LDAP Designed for if desired. VMware Administrators • Application • Copy management with a single click • Save money: Install EMC AppSync yourself • Minimize replication complexity with built-in tiered service plans Restore • Provide RPO alerts to VMware administrators Protect SQL and • VMware administrators can protect and restore their own data Exchange on • Simplified “restore to production” process reduces recovery time consistency with VMware Tools • • The Benefits of EMC AppSync include: VMware Granular VMDKs • Flexible VMware Protection • VMware vCenter Integration VMWARE CONSISTENT SNAPSHOTS When the VM consistency option is selected, EMC AppSync creates snapshots of all the virtual machines that are in powered on state while the datastore is being replicated. AppSync creates a Quiesced snapshot of the virtual machines that are in powered on state. VMware Tools is used to quiesce the file system in the virtual machine. Quiescing a file system is a process of bringing the on-disk data of a physical or virtual computer into a state suitable for backups. This process might include operations such as flushing dirty buffers from the operating system's in-memory cache to disk, or other higher-level application-specific tasks. VMWARE GRANULAR RESTORE EMC AppSync offers flexibility in restoring copies from VMware. The enhanced restore feature for VMware includes granular restore at three levels: • VMware datastore copy • Virtual machine restore • File or folder restore from a virtual disk MS EXCHANGE AND SQL SERVER ON VIRTUAL DISK With EMC AppSync, you have the ability to protect and manage copies of Microsoft Exchange residing on VMware virtual disks. AppSync supports Full, Copy and Differential backup types. You can also protect, mount and restore SQL Server standalone and clustered databases on VMware virtual disks. FLEXIBLE VMWARE PROTECTION OPTIONS When a VMware datastore is protected by EMC AppSync, users can exclude VMware snapshots for selected virtual machines to avoid writing over existing copies. Additionally, in a service plan configuration, users can choose to include virtual machine disks if their disks or files span multiple datastores. By doing so, the additional datastores are also protected during the service plan run. INTEGRATED VMWARE VCENTER SUPPORT With EMC AppSync, VMware administrators have the flexibility to manage VMware protection from AppSync and as an option, can leverage AppSync Management from EMC's Virtual Storage Integrator (VSI) - which directly plugs into vCenter. With VSI, VMware administrators can configure protection, run service plans, mount datastores and restore files right from within the vCenter GUI.
