recovery while eliminating the backup impact on application servers. By integrating
primary storage and industry leading protection storage, ProtectPoint reduces cost and
complexity by eliminating traditional backup applications while still providing the benefits
of native backups. Overall, ProtectPoint provides the performance of snapshots with
the functionality of backups.

NON INTRUSIVE DATA PROTECTION
Eliminate backup impact on the application by removing the server from the data path
and minimizing the traditional backup window. Unlike a traditional backup, ProtectPoint
will only pause the application to mark the point in time for an application consistent
backup, and then the application can quickly return to normal operations. Since data is
then sent directly from primary storage to protection storage, there is virtually no backup
impact on the application. ProtectPoint provides the performance of snapshots and the
functionality of backups while protecting mission critical data on industry leading
protection storage.
FASTER BACKUP AND RECOVERY
Meet stringent application protection SLAs with EMC ProtectPoint by backing up directly
from primary storage to EMC Data Domain. By eliminating traditional backup
applications, ProtectPoint enables faster, more frequent backup for enterprise
applications. By leveraging primary storage change block tracking technology, only
unique blocks are sent from primary storage, but are stored as full independent backups
on Data Domain in native format. This makes application recovery faster and more
efficient by recovering off of a full backup and by only pulling back the difference. In

addition, with ProtectPoint, application owners can instantly access their backups stored
on Data Domain for simplified granular recovery.
APPLICATION OWNER CONTROL
EMC ProtectPoint provides application owners and database administrators with
complete control of their own backup and recovery directly from their native application
utilities. Admins also have instant access to any ProtectPoint copy using the file system
agent. This empowers application owners with the control they desire without additional
cost and complexity.
SIMPLE AND EFFICIENT
ProtectPoint eliminates the complexity of traditional backup and introduces unparalleled
efficiency by minimizing infrastructure requirements. ProtectPoint eliminates backup
impact on the local area network (LAN) and minimizes storage area network (SAN)
bandwidth requirements by sending only unique data from primary storage to protection
storage. With instant access, you can also restore directly from Data Domain - meaning
admins aren’t locked into only recovering from XtremIO, VMAX3 or VMAX All Flash.
ProtectPoint gives you the power to restore anywhere. By protecting all data on Data
Domain, backup storage requirements are reduced by 10 to 30x.
RELIABLE PROTECTION
Since ProtectPoint backs up to Data Domain, data is protected with the Data Domain
Data Invulnerability Architecture, which provides the industry’s best defense against
data integrity issues. Inline write-and-read verification, continuous fault detection, and
self-healing ensure that backup data is accurately stored, retained, and recoverable
throughout its lifecycle on a Data Domain system.
