JAGUAR LAND ROVER
EMC Isilon drives Big Data simulation for
award-winning Land Rover products
OVERVIEW
Jaguar Land Rover designs, engineers, and manufactures some of the world’s most
desirable premium automotive vehicles available today. With headquarters in the
United Kingdom, and one of the country’s largest export manufacturers, its success
within a competitive international marketplace depends on innovation.
In 2011, Jaguar Land Rover launched the Range Rover Evoque to critical acclaim.
Now the winner of over 120 awards including the prestigious 2012 Motor Trend SUV
of the Year and World Car Design of the Year, the vehicle is enjoying high customer
demand, selling over 80,000 units in its first year alone.

design and production engineers were faced with a number of challenges. Vehicle
and environmental considerations, engineering, manufacturing, and design.
But in the case of the Evoque, the company wanted more: they wanted design at the
top end of their agenda, but also required a process that would work in harmony with
engineering and manufacturing to create something that was truly desirable and that
people would buy.
To do so, Jaguar Land Rover engineers relied on an innovative computer-aided
engineering (CAE) process. Historically, teams of engineers had worked with CAE

Land Rover wanted an innovative process that would increase collaborative efficiency,
To address the challenge, the company needed to refresh its IT infrastructure with
a high-performance computing (HPC) environment that would drive virtual simulation
for all of its engineers.
Ideally, any new infrastructure would incorporate next-generation scale-out
technologies to handle hundreds of TBs of data. Data available 24/7/365 and driven
by high IOPS was also necessary to allow engineering teams to create iteration
after iteration of design for analysis and testing without running into performance
or storage issues. Backup and disaster recovery (DR) was also a challenge:
Jaguar Land Rover required a solution that would continue to provide constant
data availability to help ensure zero disruption in workflow, even when faced
with major failures.
Following a comprehensive request for quotation (RFQ), Jaguar Land Rover chose
EMC® Isilon® to meet its challenges.

SOLUTION
Jaguar Land Rover deployed a variety of EMC Isilon scale-out network-attached
storage (NAS) technologies together with Intel processors for high IOPS data
availability, as well as Intel-driven workstations. A 54-node Isilon X-Series platform
drives innovative Computer Aided Engineering workflows. A separate Isilon NL-Series
cluster was deployed to manage backup and recovery requirements. The EMC Isilon
SyncIQ™ software application, specifically designed for scale-out NAS environments,
was delivered to provide asynchronous data replication between the primary X-Series
and remote NL-Series clusters, with full backup and restore capabilities.
The deployment of EMC Isilon infrastructure
drives innovative Computer Aided Engineering
workflows and has resulted in the acceleration of
Range Rover Evoque quality design.

contributed to the efficient Range Rover Evoque design process. Jaguar Land Rover
Jaguar Land Rover chose Isilon due to a number of factors including quality,
virtual simulations generate over 10 TB of data per day, and the company has
used Isilon X-Series scale-out capabilities to add capacity to the original 500 TB
storage configuration.
Over 6 months with Isilon, the HPC environment grew by over 250 percent.
Storage capacity increased by over 500 percent, and network management
architecture saw a tenfold increase.
The company notes that only one vendor could deliver the technology, scale-out
architecture, and capability that they required: Isilon.
ACCELERATING TIME TO MARKET WITH BIG DATA
The deployment of EMC Isilon infrastructure resulted in the acceleration of Range
Rover Evoque quality design. The company notes that virtual simulation programs,
driven by EMC Isilon technologies, allow its teams to look at problems in much
more detail, easily test new ideas, and make changes faster than ever before.
Isilon-driven CAE was used to make the complex challenges presented by the
innovative Evoque design much more efficient and faster when appropriate,
enabling engineers to create spatial images and resolve challenges prior to
prototyping—which also significantly reduced costs.
Because the teams could quickly access the hundreds of TBs of design iterations
on the EMC Isilon system, they could turn around new ideas in a matter of days,
and see new designs prior to prototyping.
Jaguar Land Rover explains that its Isilon-driven CAE environment has become a
substantive enabler to the business. In the past, engineers would design a vehicle
and then simulate it. Now, Jaguar Land Rover is doing simulations in the early
phases, even before some of the design and geometric data has been created.
2
IT now facilitates the entire virtual design process for the vehicle programs, providing
environments to view data even when the jobs are actually running. The team can
consume and view information in real time to understand where that simulation is
going and decide whether they need to take any corrective action.
Jaguar Land Rover notes that it is also enjoying significant savings due to power
consumption efficiencies provided by EMC Isilon.
RELIABLE, HIGH-PERFORMANCE BACKUP AND RECOVERY
Having deployed Isilon NL-Series at its remote site, together with SyncIQ, Jaguar
Land Rover has also created a robust backup and recovery capability to protect
hundreds of TBs of critical data. Jaguar Land Rover notes that by partnering with
Isilon, it has created a primary cluster, a mainline cluster, and an offsite backup
environment in order to protect vital data.
Jaguar Land Rover’s HPC environment, driven by EMC Isilon, has helped to change
the way the company approaches product development.
