establish a group-wide Private Cloud for their external customers and more than
100,000 employees, as well as partners within the global supply chain. Delivering
high-quality Private Cloud services means that IT can immediately create value and
thereby significantly strengthen a company’s competitive position in internal markets.
SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IT COSTS
The impressive dimensions of the cloud transformation become evident by looking at
the global IT landscape outlined in the White Paper: nearly a thousand web
approximately 90,000 desktop and notebook computers, 9,300 smartphones, and
systems 5300, 5500 and
48,000 mobile phones. The worldwide network of the BMW Group contains around

BMW Group’s Private Cloud strategy. The Bavarian car manufacturer is one of the
levels. Amongst others, those can be virtual machines (Infrastructure as a Service),
business applications (Software as a Service) as well as databases (Platform as a
Service). For example, if automotive engineers in BMW Group’s Research and
Innovation Center in Munich need to model data for a connected car, they could order
a SAP database instance for test purposes via the SSP as Platform as a Service. With
SSP, building those test environments is much quicker than it used to be. As a result,
cloud SSP contributes to reducing time to market for new solutions and providing

aligned with the strategic business objectives. Because in the private cloud almost all
storage, network and server resources are grouped into virtual pools, the utilization
rate increases by orders of magnitude, resulting in lasting cost reduction.
DIRECT FROM THE MANUFACTURER: CLOUD
STORAGE AS A MANAGED SERVICE
With EMC Managed Services and Network-Attached Storage (NAS) resources available
in the cloud, it’s possible to immediately implement innovative technologies without

first having to build out in-house expertise. Outsourcing thus proves to be a lever for
accelerating innovation.
Managed Services for the NAS environment do not come from an external IT service
provider, but are delivered directly by EMC Global Services. The direct line to the
manufacturer ensures expedited troubleshooting and problem resolution in case of
failure. This not only improves the availability of the cloud infrastructure as a whole,
but ultimately makes for more stable business and production processes. Without
having to go through an intermediary systems integrator, storage technical
innovations can be put into production much more quickly, and the acceleration effect
of the EMC Managed Services becomes even stronger.
NO MORE SCALABILITY LIMITATIONS
Many experts from EMC now support petabyte-scale NAS platforms, which primarily
includes EMC VNX® and EMC Isilon® systems. In addition, the EMC team is responsible
for the audit-proof electronic archiving of large data volumes, which are stored on
EMC Centera®, EMC Atmos®, and Spectra Logic systems.
The NAS capacity can, for example, be used for file services for the virtual desktop
environment, as well as technological developments in BMW Group’s Munich Research
and Innovation Center. The local CAD applications and computer simulations produce
enormous amounts of data, making the highly available scale-out EMC Isilon system
the ideal choice because there are absolutely no limits on the file system and directory
sizes. Thanks to auto-balancing of data across multiple nodes in the cluster and the
additional option of bringing additional cluster or backup nodes online during
operation, capacity and performance are able to scale almost at will—without the need
for any data migration. On-demand storage scalability is one of the central topics
related to the building of the Private Cloud, as the company expects a significant
annual data growth.
PERFORMANCE ON DEMAND
In order to provide a virtual server with guaranteed performance in the Private Cloud
Service Portal, the underlying storage pool must be divided into the appropriate
performance classes. And EMC’s automatic storage tiering FAST offers exactly this
possibility: different zones with different access speeds can be set up on the same
system. On this basis, the service levels defined in the cloud portal can be
implemented automatically. A great advantage of the FAST technology: Performance
is precisely allocated, depending on the response-time needs of a specific application.
This means that even very high performance guarantees are delivered with a
surprisingly low proportion of high-quality Flash drives. On average, the VNX systems
are equipped with a mix of Flash, SAS and near-line SAS drives to optimize costs.
Overall, far more than 100 VNX systems are currently installed at several data center
