AEROPUERTOS ESPAÑOLES Y NAVEGACIÓN AÉREA (AENA) EMC Ionix solutions automate network availability and reliability of Spanish airports OVERVIEW Challenges • Integrate and automate infrastructure management • Identify the root cause of the problems • Understand the impact on services and business • Obtain visibility of the incidents that affect the service Solutions • EMC Ionix Service Assurance Manager • EMC Ionix Business Impact Manager Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea is the Spanish public organization charged with managing the country’s leading civilian airports, air traffic support facilities, and networks. AENA has its own legal entity, independent from the State, but it is attached to the Ministry of Transport and Development which is in charge of defining its operational guidelines. AENA is the world’s leading airport operator in terms of passenger numbers. It runs 47 airports, handling more than 203 million passengers and 2.4 million operations in 2008. International operations include its role as a shareholder in 16 Latin American airports through which approximately 28 million passengers travel each year. Furthermore, LondonLuton and Orlando-Sandford are two airports owned by TBI, a company of which Aena Desarrollo Internacional is also a shareholder. AENA is one of the five biggest air traffic service providers in Europe, controlling more than two million flights per year. AENA Group’s average staff numbers stand at 14,188 employees. • EMC Ionix IP Availability Manager • EMC Ionix IP Performance Manager CHALLENGES: SIMPLIFY AND INTEGRATE IT MANAGEMENT • EMC Ionix MPLS Manager AENA was considering installing a Multiservice Network (MSN) to respond to the needs of Barcelona Airport following its expansion. The handling of a range of network devices from different manufacturers (3Com, Allot, Cisco, Crossbeam, Nortel, and Hirschman) required the use of specific tools for each manufacturer to manage the network. AENA needed to unify the data from the management systems for the network’s electronics, cable system, and WiFi network under one management tool that could identify end users and physical locations, as well as identify the problems that could be caused in the different services supported by the MSN. Key benefits • The ability to effectively monitor and manage the IT environment allowing for proactive and rapid problem identification and resolution • Better and more reliable services to clients • Lower costs related to facilitating and maintaining services due to simplified and automated management The main goal was to provide AENA with a commercial, open, and integrated solution that could meet and exceed the needs of Barcelona Airport’s functional requirements. These requirements included end-to-end intelligent management that would allow the prioritization of incidents according to business impact, services, and users, and reduce timescales for restoring the service. In addition, the IT management tool needed to be flexible enough to integrate with corporate databases to generate impact reports and statistics for key airport sector business elements as defined by AENA. CUSTOMER PROFILE Most importantly, the management solutions needed to be based on three fundamental points: •Abstraction—Classifying elements into categories and capturing each one’s essential properties •Analysis—Automatic determination of root-cause problems in real time, and calculating their impact on business services and processes •Automation—Implementing the greatest possible amount of automated actions, thus simplifying management “The EMC Ionix solution has delivered fully on our expectations by providing visibility and control in real time for such an extensive network, while easily and precisely identifying problems in record time.” ENRIQUE FERNÁNDEZ RASERO, HEAD OF NETWORK PROJECTS The implementation of the IT service management platform consisted of the following stages: •The creation of a web portal or section on the corporate intranet for accessing the management tool’s information, providing different user profiles with different access privileges to reports and statistics •The creation of a database or repository for storing service management registers or events •The creation of the XML-based service/business management platform interface in line with other airport applications, and integrating it according to the corporate guidelines for systems integration middleware defined by AENA The platform also needed to include the option of providing action procedure management modules for service incidents, and a connection with the corporate incident management system (trouble ticketing system). In addition, modules were required for establishing service billing and implementing SMS and e-mail gateways, as well as a tool integrated into the cable management system and other systems. THE EMC IONIX SOLUTION The chosen management solution was EMC® Ionix™ IT Operations Intelligence (patented by EMC Smarts™ Codebook Correlation Technology), which has now been in use at Barcelona Airport since June 2009, delivering on the need for a service/business management platform for the MSN. This solution brings together the management of very different devices on one console and also provides a network overview from a business level. Bearing in mind that the project is related to the cable system and to deploying a network in a new passenger terminal, implementation work lasted for 40 months. The preliminary phase consisted of implementing EMC Ionix on the existing network and dealing with the new network as a natural extension of the other. Currently, EMC Ionix solutions manage the Barcelona El Prat Airport’s MSN, with more than 20,000 active Ethernet services, making it AENA network’s first IP-only airport with video surveillance, facility monitoring, VoIP, and both cable and WiFi data. Both Malaga and Alicante airports, which also belong to the AENA network, are evaluating similar solutions. The selected EMC Ionix IT Operations Intelligence solutions are: •EMC Ionix IP Availability Manager, which provides proactive realtime monitoring of the analysis of root causes and impact; additionally, EMC Ionix MPLS Manager was selected to monitor AENA’s MPLS network (Layer 2 VPNs). •EMC Ionix Service Assurance Manager integrates and correlates network events and topologies from different sources to provide end-to-end management of the AENA infrastructure. •EMC Ionix Business Impact Manager automatically and immediately identifies the airport services that have suffered an impact, enabling AENA to proactively notify the key individuals in charge when incidents arise. SAVINGS, IMPROVED SERVICE, AND INCREASED EFFICIENCY The EMC Ionix solution for IT Operations Intelligence has allowed AENA to offer better and more reliable services to its clients, turning thousands of confusing network events into an easily identified group of specific root-cause problems that have an impact on the business services. The EMC Ionix solutions solve complex IT problems through the use of proprietary and innovative technology. The smooth functioning of the network operations center is key for companies like AENA, to ensure the availability and reliability of mission-critical IT services. The ability to effectively monitor and manage the IT environment by identifying and solving problems in a proactive way makes a significant impact on the quality of the service perceived by clients, as well as on costs related to facilitating and maintaining these services. “Bringing the functions of several tools together in one management platform has provided us with greater efficiency, as well as optimized the maintenance costs, since we pay for one platform instead of several,” says Enrique Fernández Rasero, Head of Network Projects. “The EMC Ionix solution has delivered fully on our expectations by providing visibility and control in real time for such an extensive network, while easily and precisely identifying problems in record time.” TAKE THE NEXT STEP To learn how EMC products, services, and solutions can help solve your business and IT challenges, contact your local representative or authorized reseller—or visit us at www.EMC.com or spain.EMC.com.
