Welcome
Message from the Director of Sport & Exercise
Just returning from a two day planning meeting with 6 other universities in Durham and it
is really great to see the programs and initiatives we have in St Andrews are right up there
with other leading sports institutions in the UK. Feedback from our competitors on our
student volunteers and staff who travel out to Zambia each year has been outstanding and
our Saints Volleyball Outreach program may be asked to coordinate and lead the volleyball
project in Zambia moving forward working with Zambian Volleyball Council, Minister for
Sport and the Zambian National Council for Sport. Since the start of the academic year our
Saint Sport Clubs have achieved some fantastic results and I was delighted to hear over the
weekend of three fantastic successes for Saints Sport. I would like to congratulate our
Director of Tennis Mike Aitken who has been awarded Coach of the Year 2014 by Tennis
Scotland and our Saints Triathlon Club who won Club of the Year at the national Triathlon
Scotland awards ceremony on Sunday. To round off the weekend, members of our Golf
Program have excelled in the BUCS Order of Merit, with 1st Team Captains Alex Purdom
and Ailsa Summers winning the Men’s and Women's Individual Tournaments respectively
and our Men’s 1st Team, comprising Alex Purdom, Tom Beasley, Gonzalo Leon and George
Burns, winning the Men’s Team Competition.

Saints Sport Scholarships
The Department of Sport & Exercise, in partnership with the Athletic Union, offers a support programme to athletes
who show exceptional ability and potential whilst studying at St Andrews. Student athletes competing at
SSS/Regional Squad level and above in any sports disciplines are eligible to apply for an individual Sports
Scholarship. In recent years, most scholars have been at junior international level and above. Saints Sport is currently
supporting two members of the University’s Golf Programme, Gabrielle MacDonald and George Burns, who were
awarded scholarships last week following successful applications.

BUCS Student Tour Finals in April 2015 at which R&A
World Amateur Ranking points will be awarded. Over
the weekend, 72 players teed off on the Torrance and
Kittocks courses at the Fairmont as the tour came to St
Andrews. Congratulations to Saints Golfers Alex
Purdom and Ailsa Summers won the Men’s and
Women’s Individual Tournament’s respectively (with
Tom Beasley finishing 3rd), whilst the Men’s 1st team
comprising Alex Purdom, Tom Beasley, Gonzalo Leon
and George Burns won the Men’s Team Competition.
Saints Triathlon Scottish Club of the Year
Saints Triathlon has won the triathlonscotland Club of
the Year Award 2014. This Award recognises the
achievements of an inclusive club that has provided
high quality coaching, increased participation levels
and opportunities for individuals to become involved
in triathlon in the last 12 months.
2 Founded by Mark Diamond (the current Athletic
Union Treasurer) and Jorge Milburn who graduated in
2012, the University Triathlon Club has only just
started its third year. With a doubling of membership
figures over the past two years StAUTri has seen
substantial member achievements including a fourth
place BUCS finish and Scottish Student championship
titles. An overwhelming majority of members join
with little-to-no multi-sport experience and the
infectious passion of founding members spurs
newcomers to fully participate in all areas of club
activity.
The Club of the Year Award 2014 was presented to
club members by David McNanee and Marc Austin,
two athletes that competed in the Commonwealth
Games for Scotland.
Congratulations to all at Saints Triathlon.

appointed as part-time Director of Tennis at
University of St Andrews in January 2010 and has
since become full time. St Andrews is still the only

full time Tennis Teaching Professional in Scotland
having coached Scottish Junior Squads and District
Squads during his career and several players who
have gone on to represent Scotland and over 30
players who have played for County level. Everyone at
Saints Sport would like to congratulate Mike on his
award and thank him for all he has done to develop
the Tennis Program in St Andrews.

Cross Country
(15:10) placed 25th overall. St. Andrews student
Cameron Milne (13:40) also participated, running for
the winning Central AC team.
Meall a'Bhuachaille Hill Race: On Saturday, October
25th, a group of nine Saints cross country runners
headed up to the Cairngorms to compete in the Meall
a'Bhuachaille hill race. Though originally a 13 km
course, the route was changed due to extreme winds,
making the run 10.8 miles in total with about 810
meters of ascent. Skylar Lobdell placed 7th (out of 90)
in a time of 1:31:46. St. Andrews also took home the
first place female team prize, the team being made up
of Lauren Orr (2:15:50), Maggie McGovern (2:15:51),
and Isabella Scott (2:29:20).
Volleyball
Women’s 1st
Following a crushing 0-3 defeat against Durham, last
year’s BUCS Volleyball Champions, on Sunday 26th
October, the Saints prepared themselves for their first
Premier League home game of the season versus
Glasgow University this Wednesday 29th October. The
match was especially significant as the Saints were
hoping to redeem themselves after being beaten by
Glasgow on home turf last year in a close 2-3 game.
The match turned out to be an extremely close one
again, with both teams working hard throughout
each set, but the Saints eventually secured the win at
3-1.
Scottish National XC Relay Championships: Also on
Saturday, October 25th, a team of four men and team
of three women competed in the National XC Relays
at Cumbernauld. The women's team, composed of
Angela Richardson (17:04), Molly Pace (18:32), and
Abbie Bender (16:27) placed 19th overall. The men's
team, composed of Bert Leach (14:24), Chris Russell
(15:05), Philip Wright (15:05), and Andrew Mitchell
3 The first set saw a slow start for the Saints who fell
behind by 5 points. Emma Fox helped change this
with a great serving rally that brought the team head
to head with their opponent at 13-13. From there on,
the game was extremely close with Glasgow and St

th
Andrews switching lead at practically every point.
However, in the end, the Saints were able to clinch the
set, winning 25-22.
The second set started in an opposite fashion from
the first with the Saints taking an early lead. However,
this didn¹t last long and the Saints fell prey to their
own unforced errors including missed serves or serves
that went straight to the other team’s libero. While
the Saints still fought hard throughout the set, they
were unable to complete their plays, losing the set 2025.
The third set saw the Saints ready for a comeback and
was once again a close contest between the two
teams, with lead switching every few points. The
Saints began completing their plays and hitting
Glasgow’s open spots, with Sydney Maxwell and
Danila Gasperini leading the way with some great
attacks. Besides that, the Saints also began to
understand their opponents a bit better, reading what
Glasgow was going to send over and reacting much
quicker, including a great up by Hannah Berwian
when Glasgow sent the ball to the far corner, instead
of a short tip. It was still a close set until the very end,
but the Saints managed to win it 25-23.
The fourth set saw the Saints motivated and playing
strong. The Saints were hitting Glasgow’s weak spots
and fighting hard through every rally, with great
hustle and energy from their setter Alexandra Smith.
Serve receives from the players, including libero and
captain Jeannette Viens, were also on point in this set,
allowing hitters such as Kirby Mateja to pummel the
ball at their opponents. This set truly showed the
Saints as the better team as they showcased their
strengths and smarts, winning the set 25-18. The
Saints are now 1-1 and ranked 3rd in the Premier
League North standings.
to King Chung, Flavio Della Sala and Tobias Gabat
respectively. The second set was won with the score
of 25-15. This allowed new players such as Zi Lau,
Floris Laporte and Alam Zia to hit the court.
Unfortunately the third set was a close loss of 21-25. In
the fourth and final set, the Saints came back winning
25-20 and emerged victorious 3-1 sets.
Women’s Cricket
The president, captain and secretary of Women's
Cricket had an inspirational day at the University of
Stirling Sports Centre on Sunday. At the Women's
Cricket Development Day, we discussed and
compared different perspectives on the current
situation of Women's Cricket in Scotland, the Saints
Women's Cricket team holding the sole university
club perspective at the event. We met with
representatives from Cricket Scotland, from Scottish
schools and clubs, and from the Scottish Women's
Cricket Association (a newly formed charity dedicated
to the support of initiatives that will develop and
promote Women's Cricket in Scotland). We were able
to come away with some great ideas as to how we, as
a team, and as a university, can contribute to the
development of Women's Cricket on a national level
at this crucial moment in its beginning stages. We
have specific goals to expand our outreach program
and to work closely with representatives from other
clubs and the SWCA to ensure we offer all that we can
to this exciting project, backed by, as we have now
discovered, a enthusiastic and extremely driven team
of people.
Cheerleading
Congratulations to Saints Cheerleading who have
raised £132.68 for Breast Cancer Research UK from
the sale of bows and donations made at their Pretty in
Pink Practice.
Men's 1st
After a disappointing loss to Dundee on Raisin
Sunday, the team worked hard in preparation for their
next game against The University of Edinburgh. With
the return of a starting middle, Dorian Stone, the team
looked optimistic.
In the first set the Saints came out on top, winning 2519. The momentum continued on to the second set
with great passes, sets and admirable hits, shout outs

Club of the week
Boat
The Boat Club is competing at Inverness on Saturday
8 November, its first official Head Race of the Fall
Rowing Season. After seven intense weeks of training,
the members of the senior and novice crews are
looking forward to validating their efforts in what has
been a combination of endurance, HIIT, core, and
highly technical training under the direction of the
new coach, Iain Rice. Senior squads held practices 11x
per week in a combination of erging, lifting, crosstraining and day-long outings during the weekends,
amongst others. Rowers’ strength and endurance
levels have risen dramatically and will be put to as the
test as the head race season begins.
Over the past weekends the club has travelled down
to Strathclyde Park, the home of Scottish Rowing, to
make use of their indoor tank and small boats (mostly
pairs) over the 2 kilometre stretch of water. The
rowers have found these sessions extremely
beneficial, as they can engage with all aspects of the
sport at a single facility, happily devoting their entire
weekend to improving their athletic thresholds both
on and off the water.
The construction of the boathouse at Perth will
commence shortly, and the club is ready to make full
use of these facilities as effectively as possible. There
is an outstanding proposal to acquire additional small
boats to improve the technical skills of rowers as they
get more exposure to keeping the set of the vessels
only through the use of their core stability. The club is
also looking to acquire more 8+ racing and training
boats in order to maintain the member’s high
demand for water time and race seats.
The club’s novice recruiting efforts in the first weeks
of the year have paid off, as over twenty new
members joined the men’s squad, and over thirty the
women’s. Competition for seats on both senior and
novice squads has increased greatly, motivating the
club’s athletes to seek excellence through disciplined
training.
5 The Boat Club is going through a very exciting
expansionary phase, not only in terms of its
membership base, but also its competitiveness, drive,
and performance. The upcoming head races will serve
as
scrimmages
before
British
&
Scottish
Championships, Head of the River Race in London,
and hopefully Henley Royal Regatta. The club has not
attended HRR in a long time, but is looking to
represent the University at the most prestigious
rowing event in the UK.

Class of the week
Zumba
Feel like you need to let loose a little with all of the
deadline stress? Well then pop along to one of our
Zumba classes this week.
Zumba is a mix of Latin and International music,
which actually originated when a dance teacher
forgot to bring his aerobics music to class - resulting
in his improvising to a mix of salsa and merengue
music! ... which pretty much sums up the vibe of this
class, a relaxed environment, with lots of energy and
laughs where you can pretty much just go for it! A
blend of fast and slow variations of Salsa, mambo and
hip will keep you on your toes, as well as sculpting
those all important areas at the same time but with a
bit of sass. And it’s great for if you're missing those
summer vibes of an exotic travel lifestyle! Join in any
of our Zumba classes to add a bit of fun into your
exercise regime!
Zumba: Wednesdays 18:30-19:30 Gymnasium
Zumba Blast: Thursdays 17:30-18:20, Fridays 13:1014:00, The Studio.
