The School and College Ability Test
Advanced Level Registration Guide
- Grades 7 & Older
The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth
Dear Talent Search Parent,
We're pleased you chose to enroll your child in the 2010-2011 Johns Hopkins Center for Talented
Youth Global Talent Search to find out more about his or her academic potential and connect your
family to the resources CTY offers advanced young learners. Welcome to CTY.
Now that your child is enrolled in Talent Search, the next step is to test. As a student in 7th grade and
older, your child will take the School and College Ability Test (SCAT), an above-grade-level assessment
designed to challenge even the brightest students. The information in this booklet will explain how you
can set a test date that's convenient for you, then pay and prepare for the test. CTY has partnered with
Prometric, a global provider of assessment services to make it easy to test in more than 150 locations
around the world.
The last two pages, 13 and 14, will have the information you’ll need on test day. Page 14 has space for
you to write down your test date and time along with other key information, and page 15 lists test
center procedures. They’re both marked with a reminder to take those pages with you on the day of the
test.
After your child takes the SCAT, you’ll receive a report stating his or her scores and information about
other CTY programs for which he or she is eligible. Your child will also have gained the experience of
taking an above-grade-level test that has much in common with the type of college entrance exams
encountered later on.
We think you'll find your investment of time to be well worth it.
If you have questions about testing or any other CTY programs and services, please contact us at 410735-6278 or [email protected].
Sincerely,
Karen Bond
Senior Director,
Global Talent Search

ABOUT THE SCAT
The School and College Ability Test (SCAT) is an above-grade-level test that measures verbal and mathematical reasoning ability.
The test is administered on a computer. The verbal section measures a student’s understanding of the meaning of words and their
relationships. The quantitative section measures a student’s understanding of fundamental number operations. The two sections,
each 22 minutes long, are separated by a 10-minute break and contain 55 questions. Five unidentified items in each section are
experimental and do not count toward a student’s score.
Verbal questions are multiple-choice analogies, which require a student to choose the best pair of words to complete an analogy.
Often, there may appear to be more than one answer that fits the analogy, but the correct answer is the one that best completes the
analogy.
The quantitative questions are multiple-choice mathematical comparisons, which require a student to compare two mathematical
quantities and determine which is greater. Problems are intended to measure mathematical reasoning ability and thus often do not
require computation.
The 10-minute break is optional and student-directed. In other words, the test center administrator will not come to the student to
start and end the break. It is the student's responsibility to return to the test on time. If students take any other breaks during the
test, timing will continue.
7th grade & older Talent Search participants will take the Advanced SCAT designed for ninth-through twelfth-graders.
Is the SCAT Dif ficult?
The SCAT is challenging even for students who score in the top five percentiles on in-grade standardized tests. Students are not
expected to know the answers to all the questions.
Strategy and Preparation
Because this is a timed test, students should not spend too much time on any one question, but should make their best guess and
move on to the next item. Students should pace themselves so they answer as many questions as possible. The time students have
left to work on a section will be indicated in the lower left corner of the screen throughout the test. Before the test begins, students
will be given a short tutorial that will allow them to practice navigating the screen and progressing from one question to the next.
On page five, you’ll find screen shots from this tutorial and sample test questions. You can find more sample questions online at
http://cty.jhu.edu/ts/scat.html . No other preparation materials are available or required.
4
ABOUT THE SCAT:
SCREEN SHOTS AND SAMPLE QUESTIONS
Before students begin, they’ll see a tutorial that explains the format of the test and how to move from one question to the next.
Below, you’ll find screen shots from the tutorial and practice questions. Please read through this material with your child. You can
find more sample questions online at http://cty.jhu.edu/ts/scat.html. The answers to the sample questions listed here are on page 8.
Practice Questions: Advanced SCAT, 7th grade & older

AFTER THE TEST
Scores
Parents and students may access SCAT results five business days after testing
through their MyCTY accounts (https://ctyjhu.org/mycty/login.cfm). An
official SCAT score report will be mailed to you within three weeks of the
test date. The score report explains the test results and qualifications for
CTY family, summer academic, and online education programs. If you do
not receive your scores within four to five weeks of testing, please call CTY
at 410-735-6278.
Retesting
The SCAT may be taken twice during an academic year. You may request a
retest through your child's MyCTY account. This option is available
through the student participation link. You may also submit your retest
request to [email protected]. If sending your request via email, please be
sure to include your child's name, birthdate, and address. Your new SCAT
authorization number will be available five business days after your request
through MyCTY or from our information office at 410-735-6278. Please
be aware that, while you don't have to pay the Talent Search application fee
again if you retest during the current academic year, you are responsible for
the SCAT registration fee, which is paid to Prometric.
CTY's Spatial Test Battery (STB):
Optional Assessment for Students in Grades 7 and 8
Spatial ability can be viewed as a unique type of intelligence, distinguishable from verbal, mathematical, and other forms of
intellectual talent. It is the ability to:
· Understand and remember the spatial relationships among objects
· Manipulate images in space
· Visualize how separate parts of physical systems work
STB scores can be used in conjunction with SCAT scores to qualify students for CTY summer courses in math and science.
Visit http://cty.jhu.edu/ts/stb_index.html for more information.
