SUMMARY OF PUBLIC MEETINGS TO SUPPORT THE REVIEW
OF THE TURKEY POINT, UNITS 6 AND 7, COMBINED LICENSE
APPLICATION
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, along with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District, conducted an environmental scoping meeting related
to the review of the Turkey Point, Units 6 and 7 combined license (COL) application submitted
by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). The NRC staff conducted two public meetings on
Thursday, July 15, 2010, at the Homestead YMCA, in Homestead, Florida. Approximately 150
to 200 people attended each meeting, including representatives of the NRC staff and its
contractors, USACE, FPL, State and local governments, the nuclear industry, and members of
the public. Public comments and questions were mainly focused on socioeconomics, waste
disposal, transmission line corridor, water quality, and water use.
The purpose of the meetings was to provide the public with an opportunity to participate in the
environmental scoping process by providing comments on any issues the public thought the
NRC staff should consider while preparing an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the
Turkey Point, Units 6 and 7 COL application. During the meeting the NRC staff and USACE
provided a description of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 review process, the
USACE’s regulatory role and permitting decisions, and the schedule for submitting scoping
comments.
In addition, the NRC staff hosted an informal “open house” for one hour prior to each meeting.
The NRC staff used displays and provided brochures to answer questions about the proposed
COL application.
Also, NRC staff hosted a Government-to-Government meeting with local officials on
July 14, 2010. This meeting provided the local officials an opportunity to speak with the NRC
staff regarding the NRC’s process for preparing an EIS for the Turkey Point, Units 6 and 7 COL
application.
