2001 First Quarter
Taxable Sales in California is a quarterly report on retail sales activity in California, as
measured by transactions subject to sales and use tax. The report includes data about
statewide taxable sales by type of business as well as data about taxable sales in all
California cities and counties.
The following factors should be considered when using these data:
1. Total taxable transactions do not necessarily indicate the gross sales of stores
dealing in taxable items. Only sales subject to sales or use tax are tabulated; excluded
are sales for resale, sales of nontaxable items such as food for home consumption and
prescription medicines, and taxable sales disclosed by Board audits.
2. Some businesses dealing primarily in nontaxable activities, such as services,
manufacturing, contracting, or wholesaling, either sell some merchandise that is
subject to sales tax or use some items that were purchased ex-tax and on which use
tax must be paid. Such transactions are included in the tabulations.
3. Data are compiled by type of store but cannot be broken down by commodity.
4. Businesses are classified according to their principal line of merchandise or service.

FIRST QUARTER 2001
Vehicles, 557,909 new cars and trucks were registered in the quarter, a 0.9 percent increase over
the first quarter of 2000. The number of new
automobile registrations declined, dropping
0.2 percent to 455,551, while new truck registration rose 5.7 percent to 102,358.
Strong demand continued in the housing market, leading to growth in building material sales.
Building material dealers had their eleventh consecutive quarter of sales expansion. Their taxable
sales for the first quarter of 2001 increased by
10.0 percent, to $5.3 billion. Construction contractors’ taxable transactions grew by 9.4 percent,
to $4.1 billion. Household and home furnishing
sellers experienced taxable sales growth of 6.5 percent, with receipts reaching $2.2 billion.
Gasoline consumption during the first quarter
of 2001 remained high at 3.6 billion gallons, a
3.3 percent increase over the first quarter of 2000.
The average price per gallon of gasoline was
$1.555, a 7.8 percent increase. Service stations
saw their first quarter 2001 taxable sales grow a
strong 9.3 percent to total $6.0 billion.
General merchandise stores—a category that
includes department stores and discount massmerchandise stores—posted sales of $8.8 billion,
an increase of 7.0 percent over the first quarter of
2000. Restaurants’ taxable sales grew moderately
to $8.9 billion, a gain of 6.9 percent.
California taxable sales growth slowed during the
first quarter of 2001. Transactions subject to the
sales and use tax totaled $104.2 billion, an increase of $4.3 billion, or 4.3 percent, over the first
quarter of 2000. This was a significantly slower
rate of growth than occurred in calendar year
2000, when taxable sales rose by 11.9 percent.
Measured in constant dollars, taxable sales grew
by 3.5 percent in the first quarter of 2001. The
California Taxable Sales Deflator measured the
inflation rate as 0.7 percent.
Retail stores reported first quarter 2001 taxable
sales of $68.1 billion, a 5.3 percent increase over
the same period in 2000. Taxable transactions by
business and personal service establishments grew
at a rate of 6.6 percent to $5.4 billion. Taxable
sales by establishments included in the “All Other
Outlets” category increased a slight 1.6 percent to
total $30.7 billion.
Stores featuring nondurable goods outperformed
stores dealing mainly in durable goods. Sales of
nondurable goods grew by 6.9 percent over the
first quarter of 2000 while sales of durable goods
grew by 3.9 percent.
New car dealers, which are included in the
durable goods category, had a relatively slow
quarter. Their taxable sales totaled $11.5 billion,
an increase of 3.1 percent from the first quarter of
2000. New vehicle registrations increased only
slightly. According to the Department of Motor
