The Civil War- Baseball Menu Name: _____________________________________
Name: _____________________________________ The Civil War- Baseball Menu Directions: To review the issues leading to the Civil War, and to cover the War itself, we will be doing a baseball themed project utilizing menus. The goal of a menu project is to allow each student to determine the way in which they would like to best represent their knowledge base of the information. In this case, you may choose the combination of singles, doubles, and triples that will give you the required points needed (100). Easier tasks have smaller point values and therefore require more tasks be done, while the more time consuming and deeper curriculum connections have larger values, requiring fewer separate tasks. The choice is yours! A recommendation: try to cover the three general categories of material (conflicts, people, and battles!) You will class time during the week prior to Spring Break and the project will be due on Tuesday, March 24 th. On that date, all students should have all components ready to display for the class. Singles- 10 Points Each Create a three-dimensional timeline that shows the events leading to the South’s secession. Using a graphic organizer, compare and contrast the Northern and Southern issues prior to the Civil War. Create a pamphlet that shows components of the U.S. Constitution and Confederate Constitution, comparing and contrasting them; also include information about the leaders of each. Create a mobile that shows how various states supported/ contributed to the Civil War effort. Make a diorama for one of the major battles (listed in the TEKS) of the Civil War. Create a set of 6 trading cards (3 for each side) for the important leaders associated with the Civil War. Make a cube set (found online) that matches 6 of the battles/events of the Civil War & their descriptions/ key information. Doubles- 30 points each Create a written record of an interview of a Southern plantation owner on his views about secession. Questions and responses should be recorded. Write a newspaper article reporting on one of the major battles listed in the TEKS. Make a board game based on the impact of the Civil War on industry and trade. It may use a regular board game as its base for rules and instructions, but must be changed enough to be your own effort. Create a PowerPoint presentation that compares and contrasts characteristics of the North and South before and after the Civil War. Research a song from the Civil War era. Briefly describe the significance and perspective of the song and its lyrics, and then prepare a performance of the song for your class. Triples-50 Points each Create a new political cartoon showing the Southern viewpoint of the U.S. Constitution. You're a Missouri farmer with two sons who are ready to fight. One wants to fight for the Confederacy, one for the Union. You can't talk them out of enlisting, but maybe you can persuade them to fight on the right side. Write a persuasive letter to your sons, convincing them of which side to fight for. You are attending the Texas secession convention. Prepare to debate your point of view against others who oppose you at the convention. Create a scrapbook to document the life of a woman on the home front. Choose the person you feel had the biggest impact in the war and write a newspaper article about his or her impact and why you feel it was the most significant. Keep in mind the perspective based on which paper you’re writing for. Adapted from © Prufrock Press Inc. Differentiating Instruction With Menus: Middle School Edition: Social Studies
