DIRECTORATE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) was established in 1996 to impart higher
education through the distance mode with multi-media approach. As non-formal,
supplementary mode of education, distance education differs from the conventional formal
system in its objective to reach the unreached, to include the excluded. Tripura University has
consistently promoted Distance Education on the guidelines of the Distance Education
Bureau (DEB), UGC, New Delhi to cater to the needs of –
1. Students who discontinued their formal education owing to pecuniary and other
circumstances
2. Students living in geographically remote areas of the state
3. Students who discontinued their education because of lack of aptitude and motivation
but later on became motivated
4. In-service persons, housewives, etc.
At present, there are more than 9000 students studying under this Directorate of Distance
Education (DDE). This figure is by itself indicative of the popularity and reliability of the
Directorate of Distance Education, Tripura University, amongst the common masses in
general and the students of Tripura in particular.
